June 2012 Mastectomy

Ok so 2 days til surgery and nerves got to me a little...sooo....2 glasses of chardonnay took care of it. Super low tolerance after 3 1/2 months of chemo and nothing so WASTED! Wearing off and just remembered it's bath night (every other night) for my son (almost 3). Ah well...back to reality. I really hope I can use my arms again soon. Then again, barking at the hubby to empty the trash, dishwasher and bath the kid....nice!
I bought a ton of groceries today and about 200 paper plates, utensils, etc. Friends are lined up to bring meals every other day starting Sunday through the middle of the month or longer if I need it. Good to have things in order...now some good books and movies lined up for what I hope is a severly drugged up weekend...

70f9 - we are all thinking of you! You are one strong lady ... all will be good. I'll be certain to give my little furry friend (Tino the Gypsey Vanner) a little special hug from you. Keep up the great attitude. We're with you!
-
Hi Junies, Time is drawing near, but no fretting, OK? First, this is not your fault. Second, you should use your energy positively--there's nothing you can do to change the fact that ugly cancer picked you. Third, remember your medical team is in your corner and the waiting is the hardest part. Surgery is much worse on your loved ones than it will be on you. You go out, and wake up in what seems like minutes, while your loved ones are chewing paint off the walls for many hours. And remember to laugh, make time for some things you love to do and visualize a positive outcome.
My3sunzs42, BS stands for breast surgeon. Now you would get a completely different answer from my husband. Lol! SPBMX stands for skin sparring bi-lateral mastectomy.
7to9, I am a pretty handy seamstress and have been working on a pattern for a functional cami.I was not able to find anything suitable before my surgery, so I made one in about 10 minutes that actually works pretty OK. so I want to make some for our sisters who are in need for free soon. Once I get feedback and make any tweaks, I plan to post the pattern somewhere for free.. Sorry you had to pay so much for yours.
Hugs to you all and best of luck. Be positive, laugh and know you are loved by many, many people.

DigitalCowgirl - thank you for your supportive words & advice! You summed everything up perfectly ... tis a scarey time, with lots of unknowns ahead of us ... but I choose to remain positive and hopeful for a better tomorrow. Together we are stronger girls ... let's keep up the fight!
-
7of9....you are in my PRAYERS lady. Let me know how the fighting music goes!! I am NEr-VOUS....and that sounds like a good idea to get to it inspired.
Yeah post back on when you are feeling well again. you will be in my thoughts for sure on Friday!!
-
7of9- My thoughts are with you. You are like our groups navy seal! You will go in and kick ass!
-
Digital Cowgirl...."chewing paint off the walls while waiting"....LOL that helps me not worry about them so much, I have at least 7 people in the waiting room tomorrow so far and I'm more concerned about them chewing each others heads off but I'll warn them about the paint.
Ok ya'll...I'm going into my deep operative mode rest of day. Hope to post sometime tomorrow. Wow, there is some relief actually thinking by this time tomorrow my part should be over with and I'll be in sleepy land if not coming out soon...I haven't had a single Ativan in 3 weeks but the bottle is on the counter and ready for the first sign of nerves that show up today. Lots to do though...including cutting grass, trip to the mall, and doing odd stuff like filling up soap containers and scrubbing toilets since I don't have a cleaning girl coming til a week from Saturday though mom and mother in law will keep up with laundry. My son will keep my husband busy...
Over and out...see you on the other side!
-
Sending you all good vibes, girl. You're definitely leading the charge with all the positive energy and plans in place. Hope you're enjoying your day, today, and are able to go to bed tonight with a sense of peace. I know you'll do great! Saying prayers for u and cheering you on!
-
7of9, it sounds like you have taken care of every little detail. Now it's all about YOU! Rest well, heal well.

I am having surgery on June 11th a lumpectomy. They are also doing a lymphoscintigraphy which I did look up online and it didn't seem too bad. Has anyone else had that? I am relieved that my surgery will be outpatient, amazing how things have progressed, but for me there is something comforting about being able to come home right away. I have only been diagnosed a week so still learning as I go. Tons of helpful info here and a whole lot of courageous and beautiful women to inspire me
thanks for that
-
Hi kirwin524, that's a dye injection to see the most likely lymph node that could be cancerous. It really wasn't that bad for me at least. The shot itself was pretty quick and then I needed to wait about 45 minutes and then they took an MRI image. I came home the same day after my lumpectomy and was very mobile. best of luck to you!
-
I will definitely be in June. See BS next week. BMX, no recon. This is my second time around. New primary other breast after four years. I get the hint this time. Bye bye girls. Am 68, active, and want to get back to life ASAP. That's why I decided on no recon. Saw my oncologist today and she supports my decision. Someone commented on being scared about SNB. Had one last time and didn't feel a thing. That's one ""good" thing about this. I know exactly what will happen. Soon as I get my date firmed up, will be back. Meanwhile, everyone do the best you can and take advantage of all those offers of help. You will need it.
-
7of9- your in my thoughts and prayers!! I bought a pink shirt from healing comfort also let me know how you like it. See you on the other side ((( hugs)))
-
7of9 - thinking of you sweety! You are one strong, brave woman ... congratulations on this step to the new normal! We are all so damn proud of you!
-
go 7of9 today!!!!
im praying for you right now.
-
thinking of you 7of9!
-
7of9, my prayer is that you will have a successful surgery, a rapid recoevery, and the node your doctor was suspicious of gets a clean path report.
-
I tend to lurk and not post, but I suspect there are a lot like me, taking vicarious comfort from this strong community.
I took a break for lunch and realized that this time next week my husband will already know if the DCIS is really IDC and I'll still have another six hours of reconstruction left to go. I'm really not scared of the surgery and, truthfully, I'm looking forward to having breasts that aren't in competition to see which one can reach my knees first and where's the down in getting rid of the post-baby "belly sag". What I am scared about is that *** SNB. I don't care how wonderful the no-recurrence and survival stats have become. I am flat-out scared that this has spread.
So, thanks for letting me vent to people who know precisely what I'm worried about. It means a lot more than venting to family and friends who mean well, but don't know what we go through. I just wish I could get real hugs from you, too. I'm seriously into hugs (ask my girls).
-
Hi, Lynn -- where are you having your surgery? We have the same diagnosis! Did you have a lumpectomy first or just go straight to BMX?
I'm not worrying much about finding an invasion but the possibility of lymphedema scares the heck out of me.
-
LAstar: I'm having surgery at Northwestern Memorial in Chicago. I am going right to BMX for a couple of reasons: lower recurrence and I don't want to deal with chemo/rads. I'm with you on the lymphedema. My prime hobby is gardening. How in the world am I supposed to dig holes and thin/transplant if I have to be so careful of any injury to my arm? It is my understanding that lemphedema rarely occurs with only an SNB. But that's just another reason to be worried about the SNB results: if the frozen section comes back dirty, then she'll do a radical and there you go, lymphedema risk.
-
Just a note- my sister-in-law had a radical MX with lymph node removal 8 years ago and she grows a garden every year. She also picks stuff, cans, did beekeeping for a while. She is very into the digging in the dirt (and to be honest she doesn't always wear gloves). She has not had a problem with lymphedema. So it can be done. I know I have positive lymph nodes and will have to have some removed. They say they won't know for sure how many until they get in there but that afterwards I can return to my normal life, plus some exercises and stuff. My normal life includes dirt bike riding, martial arts and horses. I am not going to give them up because of stupid BC. I got mystreet motorcycle license last year, it is a dangerous thing to do but I took the safety course, wear protective gear and practice safe riding habits. It is the same with this. We CAN still do the things we love. That is the point of going through all this crap.
Hope everyone is doing well. Special thoughts for 7of9. Kick butt today!

ow ow ow ow ow...
But HERE I AM!
Made it! Did it! It's over!
Haven't talked to surgeon yet, or don't remember if I saw her. All she told my husband was that i WAS CLEAN. Very tired and slightly nauseated. taking it easy on stomach....super tired. Sore so doing the shots as I don't trust my sstomach to hold anynap time...going to sleep soon.
touch base 2morrow... male your moves gals...I'll cover you...come on over the other side
-
Yay! Rest well!
-
7of9- been checking all day to hear that news! Rest well and thanks for posting, very glad to read the word CLEAN.
Heal quickly,
Corky -
7of9....sooo happy for you. so encouraged that you did it and came back in to post. sooo encouraged. had a shitty shitty day today so hearing your post just now makes the day way better!
-
Hooray! So happy for you, 7of9, that it's all behind you!!! Rest well!
-
7of9 - I'm so happy for you! I'm very envious that you're on the other side now ... Stay strong sweety ... you're on the road to recovery now!
Lynn - I agree completely with you ... I'm game on for the surgery and am ready to rid myself of my tiny, sagging "A" cups to move on to some bigger, better, healthier boobies ... but I'm terrified of the SNB and the final pathology report. Just knowing that I'll wake up and have a better undertsanding of what I'm up against scares the crap out of me. I too am an outdoors person - love gardening and just purchased a yearling horse. This damn cancer monster will NOT interfere with what brings me happiness!
-
second day feels worse...not! Feeling well I put on my Heal in Comofrt fight like a girl shirt and am headed back to the treah mill for round 2. vicodin has pain managed to tight, maybe a 3 or 4. Hoping walking loosens me up and gets the seratonin cranking too...No clue how many nodes theu pulled as Iasked my surgeion to keep things to herself unti she saw me and hubby at post op. Doesnt matter anyhow since I'll be pushing for rads. Hope to never come this way again...you all rock! Time to blow the doors off this thing and get on with it...
Day of surgery gets an A or A+ for me...one hang up on somepaperwork and got started at 8:15 instead of 830 but woke up to smiling up to smiling hubby and plastic surgeion. I may go home today! yea!!!!!
-
I just wanted to come here and wish the best of luck to everyone who will be having surgery in June. Once it is over, you will feel a lot better. I think the weirdest sensation for me right now is not having breast pain because my tumor was slightly painful. Do not miss that feeling at all.
I'm 46 and my surgery was on May 29th. Had a BMX (no reconstruction) and had my ovaries/tubes removed at the same time. My BS injected the blue dye for my SNB during surgery but I had the radiocative shot about 3 hours prior. Was worried about the pain but the radiologist first numbed the area and then gave me the injection. Felt only the shot from the numbing meds (just like a bee sting and felt it only for a few secs) and nothing else.
The worst about the entire surgery were two bouts of nausea but they have great medication for that. Ask for it as soon as you feel nauseous. The pain in the hospital and at home has been minimal (the BS at post-op yesterday called me his Poster Child for pain - LOL) and I only had ibuprofen at the hospital and at home. I think a lot of it was because my BS sent me home with a pain pump which numbed my chest area. Had the pump removed yesterday (not a painful experience at all but could have done without watching the pump be removed - didn't divert my eyes fast enough because the BS removed it so quickly and I didn't realize he was doing it - LOL).
The women in this community are very supportive if you need advice or just need any type of support, they will be here for you! Best of luck to all of you having your surgeries in June and from probably the biggest surgery coward, the fear was definitely far worse than what I experienced surgery-wise.
Take care.

Wow, 7of9 -- you are a badass!
