June 2012 Mastectomy

Hi, Tellie -- because I heard such great stories and saw such great results. Who do you recommend for hip flap or gap nearby?
-
Hello, I'm having BMX and immediate DIEP reconstruction in NOLA on June 5th.
I took too much time making my decision about reconstruction and was afraid that the little bit of my tumor that is left after chemo might start growing again, so I'm having a lumpectomy this week to "tide me over." Cancer has made me paranoid!
Love the comments about Dr. Google. One of the surgeons that I consulted with asked if I was in the medical field, since I seemed to be very knowledgeable. I said that I had my M.D. from Google University. (I think I stole that from someone else, but I like it

Wanted to give you June MX girls some encouragement. I had MX of left breast in November, 2011 with 14 nodes removed (surgery first as had 6 cm tumor), just finished chemo, now onto rads I was a total surgery virgin so was absolutely terrified especially about being wheeled into surgery. All the medical staff was so kind to me, I forgot about the wheeling to surgery stuff as they give you some drugs before you do that ride. Don't worry, it will be far better than you think.
I spent the night at hospital because I lived a drive away, but just a few hours after surgery I was up walking the halls and on the computer emailing friends. The drains are a bummer, but I am a big medical sissy, and I was able to do it without any problems.
My biggest advice is 1) Take your Pain Meds 2) Take a Stool Softener and drink lots of water 3) Do your exercises - I started exercises one day after surgery and regained complete mobility quickly.
I wrote about my Mastectomy experience and more tips on my Blog http://denise4health.wordpress.com
then search on Mastectomy Tips.
One thing I did was cover the bottom of my mirrors in my house before surgery. I knew I would not be emotionally ready to look in the mirror right after surgery. Maybe it sounds silly, but it worked for me. When I was ready, I looked. It was my time, no one elses.
My thoughts and prayers will be with you all.

Yes I tried to contact the Physicians Assist and the nurse. MD Anderson downtown is great technically, but one drawback is the lack of patient access. I have to wait till my appt with the BS on Monday (Tomorrow) 05/21. REally would like to have the TE and BMX at one time to avoid multiple surgeries and anesthesia even though i need RADS. Well we'll see tomorrow.

PBMX w/TE June 5.
-
Hi Rosetx. Mine is a PBMX with TE also. I'm at the end of June. Best of luck to you!
-
I had a dream about my surgery last night. I dreamed the BS made me had the surgery in the back of my SUV. Not only that, it was at my daugter's school so people could look inside as they were walking by. My PS helped me talk the BS into moving my car on the side of the building so no one could see. I should add that In real life, I love BOTH of my doctors.
Anybody want to take a guess at what that dream means? Other than that maybe it's time to get a prescription for some anti-anxiety meds. -
Hello ladies, this is my first time posting to this blog. I just finished my last round of chemo (Taxol) and scheduled for BMX on June 22. I am having rads with TE. This has been a journey for me, but God continues to see me through! It feels good to post on this blog. Now I am wondering what will I need for surgery in the hospital, and what will I wear afterwards at home?
-
Hello everyone! I'm scheduled for umx June 18th. Just finished chemo on May 16th WHOOOHOOO!! This is my very 1st post. I was expecting BMX but my BS wants me to wait till I have my reconstruction DIEP she said she did not want me to go thru 2 major surgeries with no use of both arms. So after radiation my PS will do the surgery 6 months afterward. I wish everyone the best and lots of hugs!

Welcome Llgrtt and Lisa 143 - All sort of navigating through this together. Nobody wants to be here, but it seems to help having like souls together. . . Best of luck to you all
Loriio - did we say finding something to laugh at would be helpful? Your dream! I know nothing is funny about this surgery, but you had me going. . . that image of you in the back of your SUV at your child's school - - - I'd love to hear a professional analyze that! Good grief - - In the meantime. . . I'll take a stab at it: you're worried about missing stuff in your daughter's life as you have the surgery, and you feel like your PS is more attuned to your modesty and the looks of things (and since he's the fix-it guy - that's a good thing!)

Joining the June Bug club. Tentative plan is to have SNB early June. (surgeon likes to do this ahead of time to determine if more nodes will need to be taken). Hopefully BMX for late June. Just need to get my 2nd appt. completed (today) with PS so we can get the office crew working on that definitive date. I started with a dx of DCIS in the right breast-very extensive, which is why the BS is being cautious and doing the SNB. Unfortunately, my MRI showed 3 areas of concern in the left breast. Double whammy. Was going to skip the biopsy of the left and go for the pmx rather blindly. But I just have to know what we are dealing with before I head into surgery. Good news is I can have a DIEP recon......bad news is I will be smaller chested than I am now. (I am a 'B')..as if LOL! Everyone is now on a mission to make me plumper. It has been difficult not to lose weight.....But I can tell ya....being treated to dinner on a regular basis is doing me in. Looking forward to having some 'virtual' companionship as we travel through this.
-
loriio- What a dream. I imagine it wasn't terribly pleasant but also that it was your sub-concious placing the up coming surgery among the day to day realities of your life. I don't know, just a guess. How have you felt since then?
Lisa143- Hello! I just finished chemo on the 15th and this last round kick my butt! I want to celebrate it's over but haven't found the energy yet. Anyway, Yeah for no more chemo!!!
lrgttt- (did I spell that right
). Hello! I have no idea what to bring, just saying hi. I plan on doing some poking around the boards later, will post if I find anything. If anyone else finds a list please post.
sandpiper- I keep patting my belly and calling it my new boobs. I have worked to keep weight off most my life and had typical body image problems that the chemo weight didn't help. But thinking of it as being a good thing helped. Kinda freaks out the kids when I say that though
. I am going down a couple of sizes. Since all this has happened I have realized boobs are kind of like heels, to big and they are just a pain. I have been wearing underwire combat bras for so long I forgot it was uncomfortable. I am ready for some cute spagetti strap tops!!!
Okay- so I had my post chemo imaging yesterday. All clear! 15 cm mass gone! Tomorrow I meet with BS and RO to discuss plans. Any advice? Questions I should ask? I find I have learned more from the wonderful women on these boards than from any literature, etc out there!
-
Tellie savalis - I feel your pain about the last chemo kicking you in the butt... I'm lucky to go to work, I come home and do absultly do nothing I feel like such a couch potato
. I had my sister and Mom and DH at all appointments they always had a list but I will say that all my drs have been very thorough so that was helpfu. Hope everything goes well
Llgrtt - I read from a couple of places that tlc has a post surgery camisole that is highly recommend website is www.tlcdirect.org I'm going to order me one tonight.
Sandpiper - LOL about everyone making you eat I get same thing. When someone brings me goodies I say my new boobies thank you -
@Lisa143, how did you decide which camisole to buy? I ordered a Softee2, which I learned about from a flyer at my doctor's office. It's a step-in-pull-up style with pockets for fiberfill breast forms plus a pouch for drains. Even though I may not have a drain from MX, I am planning on reconstruction and it sounds like there are almost always several of them with that surgery. I didn't even know there were similar garments from other manufacturers until I saw your post.
-
So far, no more dreams! I'm going to tell my BS when I go in on the 6th. I think she'll laugh (or maybe put me on heavy meds.)
As for camisoles, I met with a nurse navigator at the breast center at the hospital back when I was first diagnosed in March. She told me to come in to see her during my hospital pre-op and she'll go over what to expect from surgery and recovery (including the dreaded drains). She also said she'd give me a couple of post-op Camis. That's a service they provide to their MX/BMX patients. I'm not sure of the brand though. -
@loriio, my coverage includes one camisole or one mastectomy bra + prosthesis, including a fitting. I won't know until after surgery how long a delay there may be between MX and reconstruction. Other tx may be required & the PS who does flap surgeries here likes to wait until after they are complete before reconstructive surgery. The bra + prosthesis is more expensive than the camisole so (as suggested by the nurse who gave me the pre-surgical instructions) I decided to wait until after my MX to pkck. If the dela is going to be several months rather than the minimum of two or so, I will go for the fitting and see whether I want to get a prosthesis to use during the interim or just stick with the camisole and its fiberfill forms. If the latter I'll get another camisole to go along with the two I bought already.

im in the club. i don't want to be. lol. i guess no one in here wants to be but...here we are. i have a tentative date of june 18th for dmx. dcix on right and possible fibroadenoma on left...but im young so it was suggested i do dmx. it seems like a no brainer to me. fifty years of constant concern, or eliminate the possibility? even foobs...etc. im hoping for a diep but im not sure. im sort of a surgery virgin too. i have had anaesthesia for a tooth extraction that had to be done in hospital like ten years ago and i also had it for an endoscopy last year. those took like an hour and a half. diep is like 14 hrs for a double! so im super super nervous.
its funny too because for me it will be like, one minute im awake, the next minute its over. so that is pretty cool. but its that weird time hole that goes by that im nervous about. i dunno. its like im dreading the 12hr wait, (or however long it will be) only im not the one who will be waiting u know?
i want to buy something cute for the hospital. i know its not a big deal but if i can at least make it better somehow? somehow???? lol...
if i can't do diep i will do saline implants i think. i talk to the ps on tuesday and will ask him about pregnancy. my dh and i want more kids i think and im not sure of preg post diep. that scar looks like it hurts!
plus in all honesty i really like the look of implants. i suspect dh does too but wont tell me. lol. hes so sweet.
although i have a LOT of tissue to spare there. just my certain shape carries a lot of jam in the abs.
GAHHH. decisions. but the waiting is just so agonizing. PRAISE THE LORD for discussion boards like this where i can talk to others going through this too. my family is soooo supportive but they just don't have the same experience and its almost getting hard to relate to thier worlds.

Hee heeeeee Lisa 143.....eating for two!
-
Good Sunday morning to everyone.
7of9-Just wanted to let you know I'm thinking about you this week since it looks like you're first up. I hope you relax as much as possible this week (I know there is lots to get done before). We are all in this with you! -
Hey faith,
sorry it took so long to get back to you but have been having a bit of a hard time digesting all this.. No i am not doing reconstruction right away as I have to do radiation, and my plastic surgeon suggest I wait til it's done. My last chemo was May 9th Yeah!!!!!!!!! Tomorrow CT scan and wednesday I meet with my onc. to get the results... fingers crossed....
-
Hi all! Back from vacation....can't believe I'm up to bat on Friday. Trying not to think about it, have the week jam packed with fun things and cleaning and shopping of course. Getting away was perfect. I didn't do or look at anything online, read news papers, watch the news....going to stick with that route most of the week I think.
My heading in mentality is kinda Thelma and Loise style which is surprising me (thought I'd be a nervous wreck but I've been exercising, my colitis is back in remission after the neo-chemo YES! and it's summer...I want my life back...oh and my hair is starting to grow the TINIEST bit...and I had to shave my legs). Not that this is the end, but I'm hell bent determined to go out on my terms and NOT this damn disease. You want a piece of me? Here...have 2...my boobs sucka...and I'm coming for you on Friday!
If things get shaky, I've been stock piling the ativan so I'll be ready. Check in later ladies....here we go...
-
Please add me for a June 6th bmx- no reconstruction. I have been reading here and getting lots of inspiration! Thank you all. I have never had surgery before so I am quite nervous.
-
Hi all, I'm just wishing all the June girls the best. I had my SPBMX on 5/15 and the waiting is worse than the surgery. Really. My anesthesiologist gave me something before wheeling me in to the OR and I don't even remember leaving the prep room! I thought I would ball like a baby, but those meds headed it all off. The next thing I remembered was waking up in the recovery room with a bunch of snoring people. I was up doing laps a few hours after surgery, drank a bunch of water and peed out all the blue die by the next morning, and did my gentle stretching and breathing every hour.. I was told I could shower the next morning which I did on my own including a shampoo. I went home after my shower and took pain meds as prescribed. I had zero pain. I have all mobility back and can do just about anything but lift anything heavy. I think the exercise really helped me bounce back. I go back to work tomorrow. Good luck and please let me know if I can help. Hugs!
-
So happy to hear this! You rock!
-
DigitalCowgirl - thank you so much for the inspiring story of your experience!! One stupid question ... what does "SB" stand for? Congratulations to you!
-
My surgery is MONDAY (the 4th). I have Stage 4 in my right breast which metastasized to the bones. It is in my skull and my spine. I also have a few "nodes" involved under my arm. Have had hormone therapy and 1 chemotherapy. I can't wait to have them take the darn thing (breast)! They are sending me home 2 1/2 hrs after surgery. I'm a little worried about that. Because of this I've asked for "in home care" for a couple of days. I live with my 25yr old son and my husband - who is disabled (heart) and won't be able to help me much.
Afterwards I will have radiation to the bones and then chemotherapy. I hope my treatment works (that's silly, we all hope that!).
-
NanG - I bought 2 shirts from a place on line called Heal in Comfort....soft velcro fronted shirts with pockets for drains made by a breast cancer survivor. Came with a necklace thing that has a velco strap in the front to hold drains when showering and a mini apron with pockets to hold drains if I wear another shirt of mine that doesnt have pockets. They weren't cheap, $40 or $50 each but I am very happy with them and am packing for the hospital. I like the pink one, it has a small logo of a gal on the front left side wearing boxing gloves and says "Be Brave...Fight Like a Girl".
My 3 goals for Friday are #1....listen to some up beat fighting or inspiring music on the way to the hospital in the morning as this is me, storming the beach at Normandy or dropping the bomb and ending this war once and for all. #2 ...get online tell all you guys it's ok #3 do a mile on the hospital floor's treadmill (slowly!) Ambitious but something to look forward to as I'm 99% sure I can hit the first 2 no problem...
Idianel, I hear what you are saying. Will be a relief to get these things off our chest. I hear it greatly helps to get the source cancer out and then let the drugs and radiation clear up the rest.
-
We are all with you 7of9! I will have to be there at 7:30 for my surgery on the 14th, I'm kind of hoping to stay 1/2 asleep
ldianel - I am going home the same day as well. I'm not having TEs or any other flap surgery, but will have fat grafting. I'm a little creeped out about going home the same day as well, but did very well after the lumpectomy. They gave me the option to stay with that one and I said no thank you. Did you have a follow up scan or anything to see how responsive you were to chemo? At least my bald head won't drive me crazy until I can shower. That was my biggest complaint with the lumpectomy.
