Mammos and MRI after PBM
I had an appt. yesterday with the gyncoloist. She had asked me if I still have to go for mamo and/or mri. I had my PBM 4/18/11. I told her I think the BS said no, but I will confirm with her at my July appt. I was just wondering what others who had PBM have been told.

Great question.
I haven't had my PBMX yet, but it was my understanding I would be having follow-up appointments with the BS for about a year after and she would do a physical exam. After that, I wouldn't need any other follow up. No mammograms or MRIs. I could be wrong, though. Curious what other people have been told.

I had BMX for LCIS and clean pathology. I see my BS once per year for the next five years and he examines. No mammos (I had no recon) and no MRI. No tamoxifen either. That's all folks!

Boy BEACON does that sound wonderful. That's what I keep telling myself. I am having a pbmx in august and that is WHY we do it. Hopefully to put this behind us once and for all!!!!

I was pretty much told the same thing- no testing just office visits. However when I visited with the plastic surgeon and we discussed saline vs silicone implants and the advantages/disadvantages of each she said that some patients feel the silicone is a little more comfortable however if I do go with silicone the "guidelines" (I don't know whose guidelines) for silicone implants are that you have an MRI every two years to make sure there is no leakage. I am so sick of tests I told her that the thought of another MRI might be the deciding factor as to which implants I choose.

I had my pbmx about a year ago. Lcis only, clean pathology. My follow up for the first year was seeing breast surgeon at 2 weeks, one month, three months, 6 month, along with breast exam by obgyn. Now i will see each of them once a year, six months apart, so I will be seen every 6 months. No mri, or tamox.

iammommy- thats great that it's been a year for you. Hope it has been a good year getting the PBMX over and done with. Has it seemed strange at all not having to worry about mammograms, etc? Having the tests has been so much of my life for so long, even though I will be thrilled to have them over with it seems like it will be weird the first year that rolls by without having to have one.

I had a BMX in February and I have a mammogram scheduled in August, per my BS. When I asked the secretary about this, she said "Oh, you still have a mammogram"......so I didn't question it any further? When I visit my MO next month I am going to ask her. I have seen other threads on BCO regarding this......philosophies are different for different docs, I take it.

wildrumara here we go again right? There doesn't seem to be any cut and dry protocols with BC does there! I guess that's the most unnerving thing- you're always left hanging wondering if your decision or your doctors decision for treatment and follow-up is going to be ok or if you should get a 2nd/3rd opinion. Wish there was something that the doctors agreed on it; might make us feel better.

Florida - I hear ya! I have been going back and forth on this forum about radiation, or no radiation with positive nodes!!! My docs say "no radiation" with two positive nodes, but I've read on her that other women do have radiation with 1-3 positive nodes. So, I question it. Get other opinions. Spent countless hours researching trials which I do not understand! This is why your doctors and other people have told me "STAY OFF THE INTERNET". At some point, you have to trust your team of docs and move on!
-
wildrumara so true! All my docs said the same thing about the internet but I can blame my bs for my being on this site. She told me if I felt I had to look anything up go to breastcancer.org because it had very reliable information on it. The only thing is I don't think she meant for me to spend all my time in the forum part of the site comparing notes with other patients. lol

How can you have a mammo after a bilateral mastectomy? I mean, what is there to squish between the glass plates? I had my PBMX in December 11 and my chest area is going concave on me. An ultrasound I can understand, but a mammogram?? I'm wincing thinking about it...

No further testing needed for me. PBMX with implants. No more breast tissue left. What's left to image? The breast surgeon said if cancer shows up, it is in the form of a palpable lump. Breast exams r still necessary.

Thank you ladies

Like I said above, my doc said just office visits, but now I'm in a quandry about the implants. I hated Mri's so much and that was one reason I went with the BMX to avoid the " frequent testing" and MRI's if I stuck with the lumpectomy. Now my PS tells me that if I choose to have the silicone gel squishees , the recommendation is for MRI's every 2 years. That alone is making me lean towards the saline. Decisions, decisions.
