I dislike prunes, but I'm going to go get some and try eating them again. How many do I need to eat a day? My Alk phos is usually higher than normal (not way high) but bone scans show no mets. Maybe the prunes will bring it down. It's worth a shot.

    On prunes......

The French make Tarte aux Pruneaux, which is a dessert topped with Prunes soaked in Armagnac.  It's just delish.

I ditch the pastry crust and pastry cream filling (although the dessert is just fab) and get down to basics.  This is, prunes soaked in brandy served with heavy cream.  I stew them in a bit of sugar, and add in brandy.  Let cool and serve with a good bit of cream on top.

This is what I do with prunes.  However, I don't eat them that often.

I have no idea about the health benefits, but the dessert always leaves me with a smile on my face.  I am thinking too of the relationship between raisins and wine.....wine is from grapes and alcoholic.  So are raisins soaked in gin.

Anyway, ready for bed.  Was up early and had a full day, including cycling with a friend.  Can't wait to crawl back under the covers.  I have been eating everything not nailed down from all the exercise.  (I mean, I ate a huge steak last night, had eggs for breakfast, and then was starving during the ride.)  But with dinner, am ready for sleep and the week ahead.

Hoping everyone else had the most fab weekend ever. - Claire

I love prunes and eat them everyday -- didn't know there was any other health benefit, other than the obvious one.... LOL

My last DEXA showed osteoporosis in the femur and my GYN freaked out and wanted to start me on something while I am still getting rads. I said I will wait until I see my MO after rads and we'll have to coordinate medications/treatments then re: hormonal therapy/arimidex and osteoporosis treament.... are they not compatible?

I eat the dried pitted prunes. Soak the white raisins in gin for arthritis. Claire's recipe should cure just about anything!

Ugh, I really don't like prunes. 9 or 10 sounds impossible. Maybe I can try 5 or so and see if it helps my Alk phos level. Thanks Schatzi!

It would be hard if you don't like them...I could eat them anytime...in fact I used to until I worried about too much sugar.

I wonder if I could bake them into some recipe and still get the benefit?

I've never tried them that way. I don't drink or use alcohol, so I will have to find a recipe that doesn't include it.

If you are cooking; the alcohol burns off, so you just get the taste, not the alcohol itself......but I'm sure there are a lot of good recipes without alcohol at all. My MIL used to make a great German pastry with prunes (but is also had cream, a pudding like batter, a sugary crust and other delicious and fattening ingredients).

ginger_mea - Prunes are dried plums so always are dried.  Usually come in a sealed bag and can be found with the other dried fruits, like raisins, in the grocery store.  Someone else mentioned Costco, that's where I always buy mine.

Am I the only one who would be in big trouble if I ate prunes?  I am not having any "digestive problems", but adding prunes to the mix would put me over the edge!  Yikes!

You'll find them easily, ginger, yellow bag, ususally near the raisins ( red bag)

I like my prunes with fresh lime juice, or lemon juice, but lime is better...

MamaV, that would be me, too. I seldom need any help in that direction. That's the main reason I'm not munching on a prune right now.

Not sure prunes are a "miracle food" ate them when growing up every SINGLE day - still got BC when I was in my 60s - have had bone scans (two of them) don't need extra calcium according the the doc - I am the same height (5'8") I was at 30 - haven't eaten the prunes since I left my mother's care at 21 - like some of you I certainly don't need what they provide (extra fibre) - don't beat yourself up if you don't like them.....

208Sandy: Lucky you, still being the same height. I have what used to be called a dowager's hump and have gone from 5 ft 5 in. down to 5 ft 2in.  All because of collapsed vertebrae due to osteoporosis.  So from the side I look really old and stopped.  I look ok from the front LOL. I'm 76

Hi, everyone. I haven't posted for a while so am just catching up. I don't like the new format!

Ruthbru, I noticed you are from ND.  I live in Watertown, SD so in this part of the country we are close neighbors!

I have been on anastrazole for 2 months and have been fairly miserable with constant pain. I have been dealing with chronic pain for 11 years and this was worse than ever. So, I met with the chemo nurse and she suggested a two week break and start on the other AI to see if I tolerate it better.

I have tried the claritin but it didn't seem to help, and I also am taking the gin raisins without relief. I hope the change in meds is better, because my QOL was really suffering. I think I will get more consistent with the prunes as suggested, because I love them and can use the digestive help as well!

I sure appreciate the information I find here!

I managed to eat five prunes yesterday. It wasn't easy, but Iam going to try some recipes and include them into my diet that way. I'll look for low fat ones however. I already eat a lot of fiber, so the prunes shouldn't bother me that way. If it works to reduce my alk pros levels, then it will be worth it.
