wheatgrass & vitamixer

I just processed a whole big tray of wheatgrass in vitamier. Looked at youtube videos first. Just wondering how others process there wheatgrass. I clipped off the grass with scissors in vitamixer covered with water(deer park) & blended for few seconds. Then strained the pulp out with hose. Then i kept using the liquid that i got and kept reusing it in next batch.

Its very strong. I mean really strong. It tastes so yucky. But i can manage to get a ounce or so down. Plan on freezing it in muffin tins when the foam goes down.

I have read that it is a superfood/detoxer. Am i doing it right? Is it supposed to taste so yucky? I saw youtube where you can just grow it in yard. I mean it is wheat. We used togrow it ob farm

fredntan, rest assured, the benefits of wheatgrass are huge !  I want to start growing my own but will wait until I can get this 'apparatus' (I buy it frozen now).  Not too expensive, unlike some of the spiffy juicers...and made especially for wheatgrass. I agree, the taste is really strong, but you'll get used to it, your body will LOVE it Wink

    Fredntan,

I can't do the wheatgrass - it makes me sick to my stomach every time.  I'm not sure why - I don't eat any crap at all.  No meat, no dairy, no sugar, no alcohol.  Anyway, I just can't take the stuff.  That being said, it's supposed to be amazing for you.  I'm not certain the benefits will stay if you freeze it, though.  I think it needs to be consumed very soon after preparation.

I tried drinking a wheatgrass shot a while back. I actually threw up :-O. And I'm certainly not picky, but I have read that some people get nauseous from wheatgrass.

So, I purchased organic wheatgrass powder (waiting for my extractor to be delivered, so exciting!), better than nothing I guess, and I mix half a teaspoon (or a whole when I'm a daredevil) in my probiotic plain yoghurt. How does that sound?

That's what I do Carola with the frozen cube, add it to my smoothie plus there's some wheatgrass in my dehydrated combo supp as well.  Fresh tastes a whole lot better. I do get nauseous with the fresh, but I figure it's because I am so toxic...Frown

Thanks, I'm sure fresh is waaaay better, nutritionwise and tastewise :-) I think you have a point concerning nausea and toxins; I spent a month at an ayurvedic centre in south India a couple of months ago, detoxing. Doctors said those who 'suffered' the most where those with way too much toxins in their bodies (i.e eating processed foods, not exercizing, bad transit etc)..I drank for instance castor oil mixed with hot water to get out all the amla (toxins in sanskrit) and prepared for hell (spare you details!); but it went really fine. Another girl had a nightmarish experience, but she wasn't really into the healthiest lifestyle (there to lose a few extra pounds), so maybe they're right!

The South of India is gorgeous, the region of Kerala is called God's own country; lush nature and fruit trees everywhere. It's also, apparently, the birthplace of yoga and ayurveda. I had one detox 'session' with the castor oil, otherwise it was all about treatments to detox and find energy. The food was wonderful, not at all greasy like some people think Indian food is about. Fresh juices & salted limedrinks to stand the heat; coconut water to be gentle on your belly, vegetables with incredible spices...Yoga, meditation, pranayama (breathing exercizes to get 'the force of life' flowing) on a daily basis (eventhough I had to adapt the postures because of the partial node dissection I had last August). I found a friend there, who had her own story to tell about lungtumors, and we actually went to get a hug from Amma, at Amritapuri ashram the infamous spiritual leader who prays for you, and apparently heals you while she hugs you: it was a very giving experience. I didn't want to stay in a 'real' ashram this time (one has to participate in the community by washing, cooking etc. and I didn't want to risk lymphedema or tiredness), perhaps another time.

The guidelines I was given in India (think happy thoughts, stop/say no/think about it before you get to stressed about something, eat natural organic mostly vegetarian food, exercize, do yoga, breathing exercizes, meditation..) are SO simple when you first look at it (cause everyone knows exercize and a homecooked meal is better than two cosmos & Nando's), but it implies so much responsibility that I didn't want to take before, thinking i was invincible and immortal. But I feel really good, and I mean REALLY good, following these guidelines.

About the castor oil; I set the alarm at 5 am; went to get hot water; mixed the small bottle of castor oil the docs gave me the night before with the water, pinched my nose and thought Ok here goes nothing! They didn't want you to go to sleep, but to stay up (maybe they wanted to avod accidents that involved a full change of bedlinen!!) and 'wait' for the 'purge'..Nothing happened for me for a long time; in the afternoon I visited the facilities for an hour but that was it. Little bit tired but that's all. The strange thing was that I press my teeth since 6 years, and I fell asleep like 45 minutes after taking the castor oil, I couldn't help it, a book in my hand and all. I actually woke up with my mouth wiiiide open. A very nice feeling :-)

Wow, thank you Carola, sounds like you had a very healing experience and the fact that you received a hug from that lady is truly awesome (I watched a documentary about her a little while ago, she looks so kind).  I also grind my teeth and I'm sure it affects my quality of sleep.  Will find out more about the castor oil and directives.

Just getting away to a foreign land, plus the yoga, meditation and healthy food must have been extremely therapeutic Smile

You're welcome Maude :-) Grinding teeth is a REAL pain in the *** (well, mostly in the neck)..Do you sleep with a thingy to protect your teeth? (No idea what it's called in English :-) ) I lost mine (or probably my kitten has hidden it) last week, annoying! I've just started figuring out why I grind and press with my therapist, cause for me it's psychological, and I'd be so grateful to find out why...Do you have an idea why YOU grind?

Fredntan, did you mean 350 days? I looked up Yogaville and it seems really good. I go to meditation and yoga (asanas, antar mauna, yoga nidra & tratak) every week here in Paris, and they have a retreat in the Pyrenean mountains (the mountain chain between Spain and France) this summer (either 5 or 15 days) which seems wonderful and certainly more ashram like than the centre I visited in India! You actually give your cellphone to them when you get there, hihihi. If I'd go, it would be 5 days (including a day and a half of silence).

Carol, they have a yogaville training program that is 350$ a month. I really want to do it. I dont know much about yoga etc, but think this would be great for me. But i dont think i could leave my kids that long. Unless i brought them with me and we went in july. And just forget about visiting family in SC. I am leaving my nursing job in june. My job is just too draining on me emotionally. I need to focus on me. I think i will go for welcome weekend when my 15 yr old gets out of school. This has been a very draining year for us all

I have read that juicing wheat grass started when someone discovered that giving chickens wheat grass made them much more productive. Since we are not chickens, maybe we are not meant to ingest it? Look at the Wiki article about wheat grass. Spinach has many more nutrients, tastes better, and is easier to digest. Just my 2 cents, not a nutritionist.

Diana, lol, wiki is not a credible site for info having anything to do with alternative, be it food, meds, etc.

According to Dr. Wigmore, wheatgrass has an exceptional ability to both nourish and detoxify the body.

One of the ingredients with major benefit in wheatgrass is chlorophyll, which has the ability to draw toxins from the body like a magnet. Considered the "blood of plants", chlorophyll can soothe and heal tissues internally. The chlorophyll in wheatgrass is high in oxygen and light energy, which can provide the brain and body tissues with an optimal environment in which to function. The chlorophyll in wheatgrass also has antibacterial properties, which can stop the development of harmful bacteria in the body.

Spinach is spinach and wheatgrass is wheatgrass, just like an apple is not an orange and an orange is not an apple Wink
