Metastasis Definition

I have been reading a lot about Breast Cancer, and I gather that at one time it was considered metastasis if the cancer had simply spread to the nearby lymph nodes, and not just other distant organs. I saw an old article about the singer Minnie Riperton who was diagnosed in January 1976 with BC, and she was told it was terminal because it was in the nearby lymph nodes. She passed away three years later.

Today it's not considered matastasis unless it goes to distant sites, correct? It's appearance in just the nearby lymph nodes means today that it's simply either Stage II or Stage III (depending on the number of nodes effected) and is still curable at that point, correct?.

Gunzergreat, while you wait for more members to respond you may want to review some information on the main breastcancer.org site,  which explains the different stages of breast cancer.
    We hope this helps

My initial MRI stated I had "highly suspicious metastisis on sternum and liver." After my BS saw that, sent me to get a CT scan and a bone scan, both proved the MRI wrong. So, I had a UMX, no recon and I'm pretty happy with that decision. I had IDC and DCIS in different quadrants of my breast. But the Oncotype DX came back at 15 so did not need chemo, no radiation. My BS took 10 nodes but I have not had lymphedema symptoms.

Good luck to you and hope all goes as well as it could!

It's really important to read current info with regards to all aspects of bc. Curative is always the intent with early stage bc. Caryn
