I joined this message board yesterday after my Moms breast surgery. The surgen didnt say what kind she has and haven't seen a oncologist yet.

April 15th 2012 mom woke up with pain and swelling in her left breast at 5 am. called her visiting nurse and was sent to her Doctor that day. My Mom is 79 years old. her Dr. sent her right over to have a mamagrham. It showed inflamation. They did an ultra soundrite away too. I know they arent allowed to tell you there what they see, but they told my mom it is a very agressive kind of cancer. Mom had a biopsy done 2 weeks later. We saw a surgon 1 week later and was told it is cancer, but never told what kind. yesterday 1 month later she had her left breast and lymph nodes removed. The surgon said it was a inflamation kind of cancer, fast growing and he wanted her to do chemo and radiation. I got on the computer yesterday and found this site and found out what kind of breat cancer she actually has. I hate Doctors that dont tell you what is going on.!!!

So what does it look like for my Mom that is 79 with chemo and radiation? To me she is old and frail and wont make it, but she is a fiesty woman. Even at her age. Thank you all for any information you may give me....Georgia

Are you sure he said "inflamation kind of cancer" and not "invasive"? Big difference.

Almost always with IBC (Inflammatory Breast Cancer) Chemo has to be done before surgery can be done. IBC does not form a lump(s) but makes 'nests' or 'bands' that the chemo will get to make a lump and have margins. Some will have one form of chemo before surgery and another after (me) and some will have 2 different types of chemo before surgery.

I would suggest that you put in a call to her Dr and ask questions. Remember though that unless your Mom has listed you as approved to get info, the Dr can't give it to you. I have Hubby and Son listed at all my Drs and the hospitals I might wind up at if something should happen so that if they feel the need to ask questions/get info that I can't answer/know then they can get it.

    Georgia,

Kicks is correct.  Chemo is done first with ibc.  You should be able to get test results, especially pathology report as this will tell exactly what your Mom has.

Mom had no lumps or bumps, but a huge mass of infection. they gave her medicine to get rid of the infection and it didnt work very well. There were 2 masses no lumps. I lot of pain and her breast was in a lot of pain and very red. they said its a fast growing and invasive. Said she needs to get on chemo and radiation. I will call them tomorrow and find out just what is going on here. They sent her home by her self the very next day after taking her breast. The surgon said he took all lymph nodes and the all looks cancerus. Now I'm really worried. let me find out what the hell is going on here.

    Thanks for your information...Georgia

Thank you Terri. I will find out something tomorrow. It seems to me that what ever kind of cancer she has, that chemo should have been givin first . so when they cut it off it wont spread so fast

It is usual to go home the day after mast. surgery in today's world.

Inflammatory Breast Cancer is very different than Invasive Ductal Carcinoma or Invasive Lobular Carcinoma.

You also need to find out about the Stage, ER/PR positive/negative status and HER2 positive/negative status. These enter into the treatment plan and prognosis.

Get copies of all scans, tests and pathology reports.
