Lumpectomy - what can i expect?
Comments

Thanks everyone! Totally helps and calms my nerves......
-
Just wondering - Did any of you take a xanax, valium or anything else the morning of your surgery? I think im going to need it.....but wondering if its allowed?
-
I was told not to take any medication starting 4 days before surgery, including nyquil for the cold I had developed. I'm on prozac and also stopped this for the 4 days before. Better check with your doctor before you take anything that morning.
-
I did check with radiologist, breast surgeon and anethesiologist - all said it was ok - as long as I could answer questions the morning of surgery......
-
I'll add two things: take a pillow in the car to protect your chest from the seat belt when you go home and get a front-zip sports bra (Penneys has good ones). The kind of sports bras that you pull over your head will be hard to get on and off the first few days after surgery. Because of where my incision is, the front-closing sports bras that have plastic clips instead of zippers ended up rubbing against the incision. I am back to wearing normal bras again (surgery was exactly a month ago), but I still wear the sports bra when exercising or working in the yard. Probably always will--I like them now!
As for the rest, I will second what almost everyone else is saying: Surgery is a breeze, recovery is not bad at all (I took pain pills the first night and next day only), and the incisions will look bad right after and look much better in only a few weeks.
You'll be fine.
-
I was very surprised at how easy it all was. The wire insertion was the worst for me because I was os anxious about it! I didn't even notice them once they were in. Recovery from the lumpectomy was quick and I needed far less meds than I expected. My breast looked great. I had to have a re-excision and was hardly worried at all because I knew what to expect. It's the unknown that is so scary! The medical team was wonderful and took great care of me. You will do great and the relief of it being over trumps any discomfort afterwards!
-
Yes......its the anticipation that has been the hardest! Im almost at the point where I just want to get this thing outta me!
11 days and counting......

Hi everyone
I am new to breast cancer, and have a lumpectomy scheduled for Wednesday, incl. SNB. I am not scarred about the surgery, but do hope that my nodes will be negative. I will need radiation later. My tumor is 12mm as well, E+P+Her2neg.
I will go buy a front closure bra like many of you suggested. I will let you know how it was for me, all the help I can get is very much appeciated. This is not easy for sure!!
-
Shayna I know what you mean. I have been diagnosed 2 weeks now with same size tumor as you. Lumpectomy and SNB tomorrow. Ups and downs for me too, wondering if things will ever be the same.
Hang in there, I will post my surgery experience.
-
Inia - Im curious why they decided to do SNB? It crossed my mind when the RO mentioned it isnt routinely done with DCIS....
I did have a clear breast MRI, but really, that doesnt mean much....not compared to the path report
-
I had the wire, and to top it off, I was told my mass was deep in the chest wall. Do NOT worry about the wire. No, it is not fun. It was unpleasant , just as going to a dentist is unpleasant.
Please---dont bother worrying about the wire. That will be fine. They will do it, and it will be overwith . Make sure you ask for Lidocaine ...just as you might request novocaine at the dentists. It was more worrisome than anything. The wire will really help your surgeon to be more precise.
The lumpectomy was not bad, and cosmetically, the breast looks fine ... perfect. Ice becomes your best friend. I had a 1 cm. mass at 11 o'clock position. My surgeon did the incision by the nipple and ' went up'. I have NO scar at all.
Wishing you all clear nodes and margins ...the hardest part REALLY is the waiting.
Good luck to you. -
I wished I had the front closure when I got home ...sure didnt feel like shopping at that moment.
It would have been great to have . ESP for applying ice. Make sure your bras are all ' roomy enough' - I found if I wanted to put a small ice pk. in I preferred the next size up to be comfy. If not, get the front closing.
Best wishes!
-
Thx purple32! I did buy some sports bras......not with front closures, but im going to exchange them today......and I did get them in the next largest size.
thx!
-
Shayne - I had wire insertion (2 of them MRI guided and then 1 more ultrasound guided just before surgery). I had to have the MRI guided wires inserted at 7AM, and then I went to work for 2 hours and went to the hospital for my surgery at 10:30AM. Not a big deal -- sort of weird knowing they were there, but my BS made sure they were secure!
For me, I was in quite a bit of pain for about 2 days, but by day 3 did not use any pain meds stronger than aleve. I did not use bras because they hurt - I used a "bralet" for 2 days, and then by day 3 was able to wear a camisole (without the bra part) and then by day 5 was able to graduate to a sports bra. It was funny, for me, the 2nd of my biopsies was much more uncomfortable than the lumpectomy after day 5 or so. I actually ran 6 days after surgery (though when my BS called to discuss my lumpectomy path results and I told him that I had just come back from a run - it really made him pause
)
Good luck, I will be checking the boards to see your post afterward ... and thinking about you on the 25th.
-
thanks !!
-
This has been a big help for me as well as I'm having my lump/AND on Friday. Feeling pretty calm about it but any additional info helps. Good luck, Shanye!

Hi Everyone and hi Shayne!
I had an infiltrating ductal carcinoma, 12mm..
Surgery was yesterday and it went very well. I took 0.5mg of Xanax witha sip of water before going in (had surgeon's ok) and then had the wire placement with dye injection into the breast. Not fun, but not bad. They took out two lymph nodes which are preliminary negative. Bought front closure sports bra one size bigger than normal at JCP.
I had some after effects of the anesthesia which made my heart race during the night, but other than that I did not need any pain meds. I had Motrin 800 mg after the surgery while in recovery.
No real pain today, just soreness in the arm pit area where nodes were removed. Breast looks the same as before in size etc. This part so far was easy and I hope it will be for you too and everyone else waiting for the surgeries.
Will start radiation in June as well as Tamoxifen, most likely.
-
Hope your recovery is speedy
Just curious why my nodes arent being removed/checked?? What is standard procedure?? I did a contrast breast MRI that showed it was contained in the ducts.....but really, how do they know??
Inia was it suspected in lymphs prior to surgery?
-
Shayne, I think because you have Carcinoma in situ, which means it has not spread (or infiltrated) out of the duct. That is great news for you! You will just fly through your lumpectomy and maybe some radiation? Lucky that you found your lump so early. Did you find it via a mammogram? I did mine...
My cancer infiltrated the area outside the duct, that is why the lymph nodes were checked.
Hope that helps!!
-
oh......yes, my first mammogram found it. My FNP didnt find it at my gyn exam 2 weeks before.....neither did I during my own self exam.....I still cant find it....
Really am reconsidering doing the hormone therapy.....ive read some horrible things about SEs.....
-
Just had my lump and AND yesterday and I feel really good. Very little pain unless I move around a lot. No pain meds yet. Just used some ice. The needle insertion was not fun but they gave me plenty of numbing when I asked for it. The drain is not a big deal, just kinda hanging out there. They put me in a surgical bra after the surgery. Didn't need any anti-anxiety meds because I meditate and I'm a Buddhist and chanted before I went which helped keep me calm. And I had huge support from my friends. Bring something l Iike a book or mp3 so you're not obsessing while you're waiting for things to happen. And just breathe.
-
thx - the countdown is now.....next Friday. Emotions of fear, anxiety.......mixed in with LETS GET THIS OVERWITH! - but not looking to the other decisions waiting me........and waiting and waiting for the Path Report to come in. Got just a few hours of sleep as my mind was racing and everytime i was nodding of my husband started snoring! this day is going to be ruff i can tell
-
Take it one step at a time or you'll get overwhelmed. Find something that distracts you that you love. I paint so I started a self-portrait to work on during treatment. Best of luck!
-
YEs - this is so so true - today I am overwhelmed bc i did so much research last night. Its only in distraction that I am at peace with it all! when i look at all that is ahead of me - it is so completely overwhelming.........
wishing i had a double who was emotionless - a robot - to do my research and give me the answers......
-
No one has mentioned......how does your breast look after lumpectomy? Its really been a small concern until now - you dont see a lot of pics. Tho my lesion is v small - surgeon said she will need to remove a golf ball size to get clear margins. I looked at a golf ball the other day - it was much bigger than what was in my mind, lol....
countdown has begun. The days are not going by as slowly as they were before........friday will be here before you know it!
Friends are having a major bash at their house monday memorial day - I doubt I will feel up to being around that many people....
-
As far as I can tell, my breast looks pretty much the same but I just had surgery Friday. My tumors were very small and at the 2 o'clock position so they were on the outside of the breast. So much depends on where the surgery is going to be. I felt very good right after my surgery - very little pain, more discomfort than anything. Maybe have someone go with you to the party and ask your friends to stake out a quiet spot. Take it easy and be prepared to leave before you're worn out.
Sending you love and light for your surgery. -
Shayne, I had over 5.5 x 3.6 x 1 cm taken out, and I am small (very small B cup). It was at 10 o'clock - just like lifeonitsside it was on the outside. When I am naked you can definitely tell (and not only because of the scar, which is about 2 inches), but when I wear a jogbra you can't tell unless you really look ... I can see it when I look down, but others can't see if they look straight on.
You can't really tell what it is going to look like for about 3-4 weeks, because it is usually swollen and the swelling takes a while to go down. My breast (sans scar) looked pretty normal until about 4 weeks out.
Good luck to you both in your recovery. And best of luck to you in your upcoming treatments.
-
Mine is also v small, im a c cup, (but a small c cup) and it is located at 10 o'clock & right upper quandrant......
Its not weighing heavy on my mind.....i feel v fortunate that i get to keep my breasts.
thx everyone!
-
woke up 3am - scared . . . . .
-
You will definitely be fine on Memorial Day so feel free to plan to socialize. The day after mine I took my yellow lab to the dog park. It was a hot day too.
