More and more people are posting on Stage IV..
....at inappropriate times, and it is causing some upsetness there.
Mods: it's the new redesign. Your people have GOT to change how Active Topics display.
Instead of:
No you don't Understand....
In Stage IV and Metastatic Cancer forum
Any Active Topics entry should read:
Stage IV and Metastatic breast Cancer Forum (BOG FAT BOLD LETTERS)
Thread title: No you don't Understand.... (smallish writing)
I don't understand a few things myself....such as, why this hasn't been taken care of???? It's been a source of much hurt for years, you do a redesign, and a simple concept like this is overlooked????
How many threads do we need in order to bring home the point. Some sisters there are truly getting upset and hurt - and I can understand why. But that's because I have been here a while. Many newbies are stumbling around - they may well have the sense not to post on Stage IV in inappropriate ways, but they need visual cues.
Early stagers need to be able to EASILY SEE the name of the forum to ensure that we don't intrude at the wrong time.
Everyone's space should be respected, not just Stage IV, but, really, this is such a well known, ongoing issue, you would think the designers would have taken it into account.
Again, a simple, no cost fix.
I have very, very very bad eyes and zero visual cognition. I can understand how someone can stumble on to a Stage IV thread. I am someone who can't even recognize herself in pictures. Yes, it's true. So I am especially sensitive to people truly not seeing o reading.
T H A T I S W H Y Y O U H A V E T O M A K E I T E A S I E R ....
Again, Active Topics should read:
THE NAME OF THE FORUM IN HUGE LETTERS
the name of the thread in tiny ones.
...this gives lurkers a chance to pause and realize where they are really posting to. They can still go ahead and post if they wish, but I get the sense that some non-metsters have contributed out of sheer lack of awareness of where they were really posting.
Most people here are not tech savvy 20-somethings. We have our other health issues too (zero visual cognition is one of mine)....you have to "handicap" the site appropriately.
Just read Stage IV these days....lots of upset customers. Some don't like the redesign, true, but it's leading to some real discomfort and there is a sense of loss of sanctity expressed. I say the confusion is to blame for this dramatic latest uptick in sentiment. No one means harm. But getting lost anhd posting to stage II isn't the same as doing it on stage IV.
Please do something....thanks.

We continue to look at ways to help everyone find the most appropriate place to post. New members aren't usually aware of the history and feelings around posting in Stage IV, and may see it as the most appropriate place to post to reach members who know their way around so many aspects of BC. Then there are the members who do see the forum name, know the situation, and post anyway because they see their question as so pressing it needs to be asked without regard for others' feelings. No matter how big and bold the forum name, some will always choose to post there.
That being said, we're still working with the developers on this and many other concerns.
If members see a thread that doesn't belong, please send us a PM with the URL and we're happy to move it, and let the poster know where it's gone. No need to reply to the thread telling folks they're in the wrong place; we'll handle it.
The Mods
Edited because of course it should have said thread, not post.
-
Let me see if I understand this correctly:
If someone sees a post from a non-stage IV-er that shouldn't be there, PM the mods and the mods will move that post?
Where do you move a post to? You can move a thread, but not a post....
-
I totally agree with Athena. I know I will accidently post to stage iv at some point because the topic is so engaging/interesting that I will forget to check the forum. It needs to be in BIG BOLD LETTERS. (At least stage IV, along with the request for sensitivity)...
I do NOT want to step on anyone's toes, particularly the women facing stage iv.
Please... consider changing the size font of the forum within the active topics list.
-
I would like to add that not only should the forum title be in BOLD and maybe CAP letters, but it should be on a separate line from all other information. Now it is jumbled in with other stuff such as poster name, date of posting etc. Even trying to look out for the forum, it is hard for me to find it. Not good. Please fix.

Athena
"customers" ? Does anyone pay? Perhaps an alternate site that is a paid subscription service for those dissatisfied with how BCO operates would be the answer. In fact to be sure that members are in the correct category members could be required to have a physician vouch for their diagnosis. It could also have password only access which could solve the vexing privacy issues. -
ha, ha....I was being old fashioned. You know how people say "cool customer" or "unhappy customer" in daily parlance.
Of course, in that sense one does pay through the nose to be here - you have to get cancer.
-
I too would welcome the bolding/color change of the forum name for stage IV. Now when I am on the active topics page I have to check carefully to be sure I know it's the stage IV forum. I'm not a newbie. Newbies don't know to look.
-
How about a different color for Stage IV topics?
-
Hey All,
We ARE working on this. We are not eager to bold it, or make it a different color, as we fear that this will only draw more people TO the forum. That is, that it would backfire. We're playing with alot of different options!
Stay tuned,
Your Mods

I haven't read the "new to the forum" column, but maybe it needs to be stated there...in no uncertain terms, what the rules are about the stage IV forum. When I first came I didn't know...but I do now, and respect the boundaries.
-
I have an oddball suggestion.
If the OP really feels strongly about only having Stage IV responses...maybe they could preface their post with something like:
"I am looking for responses from Stage IV women/men only, please".
When I first started here it took me awhile to pick up on the fact that non IV's were not welcome there. And even then it does get into gray areas when the topic is more generic and not solely related to being stage IV. And to make it even more confusing...some members don't seem to mind non IV's responding in some threads if they have something relevant to add.
Aside from having a "warning box" pop up that says "You are about to post on a Stage IV forum..are you sure?"..... it seems like you will always have this problem to some degree no matter how it is labeled. I'm just thinking that having the OP preface a particularily sensitive Stage IV post with something might be a possible solution that might work for some??
-
Susan I think if a pop up is considered it would have to include an opt out of "don't show again" or it would get annoying.
I agree that I don't know when/when not to post on the IV threads. Someone I've "met" and had discussions with on non stage IV threads posted about good results she got today. I felt I wasn't allowed to post a congratulations her because I'm not stage IV.
Maybe there could be a function that allowed the IV posters to click something that would appear on their thread heading "Stage IV only"
-
That's a good idea lago. When starting a thread it could default to "Stage IV Responses Only Please" somewhere in the heading/top of the post unless you purposefully "unclick" it?
Then you would know they had to consciously unclick it...i.e. they would be happy to hear a "congratulations" from a non stage IV like you.
-
By the way, as an inbetween solution, we added "ONLY" to the Stage IV forum.
May or may not help....
-
I noticed the "ONLY" ...I think it will help a little bit.
-
Can I just say that not one of the posts above was by a stage IV metster. I agree with the Mods in this case. It has little to do with the new web design. I have been on the stage IV boards since day one, and there are often posts by other stage sisters in our stage IV threads. I actually saw the title "More and more people are posting on Stage IV..." and expected that one of my met-sisters had started this thread so was quite surprised.
-
I just thought I'd mention that it looks like they switched it up so that the FORUM is now before/above the topic in Active Topics...i.e. so the "For Stage IV...ONLY" is much more noticeable.
-
I occasionally post to the stage IV section but I pick and choose my posts carefully. Just like any section. Hopefully the ONLY makes it easier for people to see what it is, but I will say unless told by those I am replying to... That they no longer welcome the limited posts I may make in reply to them. I likely will occasionally still post there as I have friends in there.

When you go to "All Topics", the forum is in bold red. This automatically catches your eye and you know whether it is appropriate to post there; however, when you go to "Active Topics", it is just the opposite: the thread is in bold red. It's is easy to see why people would post in inappropriate places because their attention is being drawn to the color red. It would help greatly to be consistent and keep the bold red in the same area in both places. We are creatures of habit. Tammy

I did notice the change, Mods, and I'm sure we all thank you. That said, sometimes I post on a Cold Cap or Help Me Get Through Treatment topics, which aren't stage IV, but as Susan has mentioned, I don't think we mind non-stage IV's posting on our boards when they have something relevant to say or ask. I have received personal messages from ladies who are awaiting results or have questions about mets, my use of cold caps, my chemo, etc. and I am personally glad to be able to share my experience if it's helps someone else get through this nightmare. I would never ignore a question from someone because they aren't a "metster". With everything we have to deal with, shouldn't we be a bit more kind to one another?
-
Oh...I really appreciate the change of order in Active Topics, putting the forum on top!! Thank you!!!
There will always be people that will insist on posting inappropriately. But this change will help me personally avoid accidently posting inappropriately. Thanks!
-
Maybe the way to stop posts of anybody that is not Stage IV , a completely separate login for that section is needed, I ,like some we do not want to cause any more stress when we post there not thinking, not on purpose .
-
Not to beat a dead horse, but if what is trying to be achieved is for the Stage IV forum to stand out, I think this most recent change of putting the name of the forum in smaller font than the topic defeats the purpose of it standing out. It stood out more the other way around, especially after you added the "ONLY". JMO. I caught myself a couple of times already not realizing what forum I was in because the topic is what sticks out to me.
-
Really trying to get it right. Do you all think that the FORUM should be red, not the topic?
-
The forum type is smaller than the topic type. I would switch that around first before you try the color change.
-
Just noticed that the font for the forum is only smaller in "active" topics, not so in "all topics". Sorry if I confused you...i usually browse by active topic so it's the only one I looked at. Now for my stupid question...what part is red? I don't see red anywhere (I'm missing something).
-
Thanks for your help!Good suggestion, Lago! (I hadn't even noticed that right away!)p.s. gracie1, the active topic is red BEFORE you select it).
-
Nothing is red on my screen, anywhere, before or after selection. Just the "New" indicators and the number bullets in the index...eg. '2' by private messages.
-
Never mind. Just been informed that the change to red hasn't happened yet. I misunderstood. Sorry. IMO, and I know you had mentioned it before, I think making it red will backfire.
-
I personally like the way it is now. I think it will keep people from accidently posting on stage iv. It will NOT solve the problem of people who are insensitive. That is just life...sadly.
Please mods...let this set up go for a bit and see how it goes....
And thank you for working so hard at this!
