Hmmm okay. Well, we'll also include it on the list, just in case it's a browser issue
-
I haven't noticed any changes so far except for a small one on Active Topics which is still a pain to scroll. I don't get bright white on my PC - soft grey.
-
I love the new site on my phone...but, the bright white background lirerally hurts my eyes. After just a couple if minutes I have to stop and close my eyes for a bit. They even hurt to do other things after being on here. Especially going outside in daylight. This is a huge issue for me. Looking forward to seeing the color changes being worked On. Overall, I like it!
-
I've decided I prefer 75% view - wish there was an 80% - it's a bit small. Can you get the devs to alter the font to be smaller - it is way too big.

Athena, "breadcrumb trail" is web jargon for a row of active links displaying the path that got you to where you are on a website. As a lioness, you would ignore breadcrumbs; but Hansel & Gretel thought they would be useful to find their way home. People visiting complicated, multi-level websites find them useful to go back "up" a hierarchy of web pages.
Here's more than you ever wanted to know about breadcrumbs and breadcrumb trails: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/03/17/breadcrumbs-in-web-design-examples-and-best-practices-2/
What I don't understand is that these Discussion Boards have always had a breadcrumb trail, but now it's gone. Even when the new BCO format was activated on Tuesday, there was still a breadcrumb trail on every page. That was helpful -- essential, even, for those of us whose pages weren't displaying correctly (missing blue nav bars, missing drop-down menu).
Yesterday afternoon, the breadcrumb trail disappeared. It's still gone. Because my page is not showing any nav bars or drop-down menu, I cannot go from this thread back to the main page for this forum ("Forum: Comments, Suggestions, Feature Requests") except via the "All Topics" list. Without the nav bars, the only way for me to find the "All Topics" list is to click on that generic "Menu" button up top. I'm needing three clicks to do what one click did on Thursday.
Here's the breadcrumb trail that would probably be at the top of the page we're on right now:
Breastcancer.org Discussion Boards > All Topics > Forum: Comments, Suggestions, Feature Requests > Topic: Post your tech glitches, errors, problems, etc. here
Each of those phrases would be an active link that would take you directly to that particular page. Very user-friendly; employed by web designers to provide simple shortcuts for users and to make the site organization more obvious.
A breadcrumb trail here at BCO would be sort of redundant with the new drop-down menu. Since some of us don't have a drop-down menu, or we lost the one we had yesterday, we're running around in circles.

Otter, this may be a browser versioning issue; the bread crumbs show up for us. Can you upgrade your browser to a more current version? We will include this glitch in the list for the techs, but that may be a solution...

Mods, I suspect you're correct -- it probably is a browser version issue. The odd thing is that the breadcrumbs were there yesterday (Friday) morning, and Friday evening, they were gone. Something changed on Friday to make my browser much less compatible with this new format than it had been just a few hours earlier in the day. As I said, I lost the gray column, the nav bars, and the drop-down menu at the same time on Friday.
I understand that web designers can't accomodate every version of every browser. I especially understand that out-of-date versions of software needn't be accomodated at all. I've been warned repeatedly by Firefox pop-ups that I need to update my browser. But, I cannot do the update until I purchase a newer version of the Mac operating system than I have now and then download an updated version of that one.
It's my fault. I've been procrastinating. I need help with all the updating, because I am ignorant and because our ISP does not allow us to download software here at home (HughesNet puts a strict limit on bandwidth). (Sorry. TMI.)
Thanks for your advice. You are probably right, but there is some other stuff going on right now that trumps driving to town to try to find a place to pick up a wifi signal so I can update my brower and other software, which will probably take half a day. That's just how things are, sometimes.

Otter - I've never seen breadcrumbs, but I've always had the drop down menu - weird.
-
Don't know if it's just me, but I'm having a problem today with my screen suddenly jumping back to the previous page as I'm composing a post, resulting in my not yet submitted post(s) totally disappearing. I've occasionally had this problem in the past, but it's happening a lot today. Deanna

It's probably been mention, but I wish I could increase the size of the text. My eyes get really tired trying to read the small print. I use Chrome
-
thank you otter. :-)

Otter, I've been trying a few things using my not-the-most-recent versions of the Mac OS, and both older versions of Firefox and Safari. Right now I'm seeing the breadcrumb trail in Safari, but not in Firefox. If, using Safari, I make the page narrower so the left side navigation panel goes away, so do the breadcrumbs. The breadcrumbs come back with the side nav. panel. We'll see what the techs can come up with to keep them active in either view for everyone.
dlb, that happens to me too, usually when I've clicked somewhere outside the box where I'm writing a message, and then click the Delete key - it flings me right back to my previous page. I just did it deliberately, and fortunately I can get back to my message (it's still there) by using the browser's navigation arrow.
-
I tried the crtl + and the the text gets larger now. I tried that the other day & it didn't work. Glad it does now
-
mrsnjband, we're glad too!

Suggestion:
Maybe the mods can compromise and make a "classic view" version of the site available to those of us who for one reason or another can't adjust to the new website. This is a common trick when making a major overhaul to a website that thousands of people use to prevent exactly the problem that is happening here now.
Here are two examples:
When Weather Underground, the weather website, released its new website, they made the "classic" view available to long time users who did not want to switch. To this day, my husband despises the "new" mapquest, but he is pleased as punch to to use the classic version.
You can see and compare the two versions here:
http://www.wunderground.com/ vs. http://classic.wunderground.com
Mapquest did the same thing:
http://www.mapquest.com/ vs. http://classic.mapquest.com/
Could we do that here? Could you give us back our beloved normal BCO as a "classic" option?
Pretty please? With sugar on top? -
<sigh>... Just when I thought it was safe to come out of my den.
Mods, you were right. When I use Safari to access the Boards, the new format displays correctly. The nav bars are there, as is the drop-down menu... and even the breadcrumb trail. All of those are still missing from my Board pages with Firefox.
BUT... when I tried to submit a post in Safari, I got a nasty pink error message:
"There were problems with this submission. Please correct the following information:
Please enter content in the body of your Post."[That would be bright red letters, on a pink background, with the first part in bold-faced type.]
Oh, ha ha, I thought. I just got through typing a message and clicking "Submit". Of course there was content in the body of my post. Maybe it vaporized enroute.
So I logged off, closed my browser(s), ate supper, and logged back on again with Safari. The site still looks great, and the links are functional etc. (and they're still AWOL with Firefox). But, once again when I typed up a message here in Safari and hit "Submit", I got the "no content" error. Huh???
I was all set, and satisfied, to use Safari to access the BCO Boards until I get my browser problem fixed. The site looks fine with Safari. But, it appears that I'll have to login with Firefox if I want to write anything (as I'm doing right now). That will certainly cut down on my posting, which some people will appreciate. (Beat ya to it!)

Ok, now I'm curious....
...of to download another broswer for the sheer curiousity of seeing if I get a completely different experience of BCO.
otter, for a swimmer you have telescopic eye sight....an otter who can see all the way to shore and spot breadcrumbs is truly an avid otter.
-
Wow, I just noticed something.
Look at the number of posts listed beneath each of the women posting on this thread.Mods, whatever else you may have here, you are definitely dealing with BCO board veterans.
-
When you send a PM would it be possible to edit it like you can on posts, I hate to send out PM's with mistakes in them. The bluey white background is much easier on the eyes. Thanks, mods, this must be qite the headache for you.
-
Interesting....here I am,. having just downloaded Google Chrome.
Again, Windows 7 desktop user here.
In Chrome the font is a bit blurry - as though it were a photocopy. On IExplorer, you feel you are getting the original copy.
Colors are identical...functionality seems the same. But IExplorer sounds like the blueprint. Think I'll go back to it....
Also, in Chrome, no matter how many times you press CTRL + you will not get the posts to extend all the way across the screen.
[SNIPPED]
MODS: One annoying thnig I notice - I can't get the whole web address to post. The system makes the link hot and gets rid of the final trail. Annoying editing - I hate it!
In order to show the full address of the links above I have to creat spaces (I hate it when computers treat you like a baby and think they know what you want to say).
See here. (with spaces):
http://community. breastcancer.org /forum/93/ topic/787232?page=8
Without spaces, it comes out like this:
http://community.breastcancer.org/forum/93/topic/787232?page=8

Thank you for opening this can of worms for us. The only problem I am experiencing is the "Back to Top" button is not responding. I use IE / PC.
-
testing from Safari - otter, we're working on it!
-
karen333, once you've sent a PM, it's gone and can't be edited unless you want to re-send it with fixes. While you're writing a PM, the little check-mark on the right of the formatting menu just above where you input your PM text is the spell-check function, if that helps.
1Athena1, we've found that too - not being able to enter a full page URL and having it display in clickable form without being truncated. Nice of it to automatically make full URLs clickable, but sometimes that's not what we all want. This has been reported too, thanks!
-
Mods - are you working to give us a color option in the responses and the typing area? I am still dealing with a bright white background whereas the OP post looks great - could we switch the colors around so that the OP is on the white but the responses are on a softer color like the light blue I am seeing?
Running Windows 7 - IE9 and I have tried every suggestion from the members but still have to deal with this problem which is hurting my eyes. Don't know why it is working on other browsers but not this one and this Windows 7 - Internet Explorer 8 or 9 are pretty popular.
-
iPad editing still seems a bit glitchy (although the forum itself looks really good on the iPad!).
I couldn't edit My Profile: The keys froze after editing one word, and even though I saw the "Select/Select All" popup after tapping on the sentence, it wouldn't select anything. Even the backspace/delete key would not move.
-
Help please ! my links don't work, I consistently get a 'page error' message when I double check once posted. Thanks and happy Sunday
-
Maud, checking your recent links, they go right to the articles with no problem. Although the links are truncated in posts now (it's been reported), they do work.
-
Oh good ! amazing how our different puters work or don't work giving you mods this cacaphonic feedback. Have a nice day !

otter here, reporting from Mr. otter's iPhone 4s. I have no idea what version, but he got this on opening day so it's pretty new.
Oh, and I'm using Safari.
1) There are NO nav bars. There is NO drop-down menu. There is NO breadcrumb trail. Just a blue button labeled "Menu". No more nav capability than I see on my laptop with Firefox.
2) I do now have the + and - to collapse the categories.
3) Fonts & colors are ok.
I don't know if the format is better or worse now because I use this iPhone so rarely-- only when I'm in the right seat. I cannot resize the screen to make it any smaller than the device screen.

I've run into a problem. I was trying to change my avatar. In the past I haven't been able to do this with firefox so I went over to Safari which I have used many times. This time I was logged out and tried to log in. Says my info is incorrect even though it is the same info used on Fox. So I said forgot password just to see and typed in my email address and now it says no such address is with an account. So I'm very confused as I went back and found emails connected with the account. I must be doing something wrong just not sure what.... any thoughts?
