The background color on the posts is now a bright white, really difficult to read, worse than before.

This is actually an old problem that carried over to the new format....Undecided

After I start typing a response, I can highlight words in the reply box on maybe one or two lines, but if I want to highlight farther down, say, to BOLD something, or even delete some lines, highlighting is not possible.

    Suggestions?

Jancie - try ctrl + or ctrl - to enlarge or reduce the info on screen.

Cindy - thanks - that does work!

Love it how everyone is trying to help us technically challenged people get through this major change.

I don't mind change so much but I don't do well with computer changes as this stuff doesn't come easy for me.

    Jancie,

As for missing zoom levels, make sure the browser's status bar is showing up. Click on "View" on the top menu, select "Toolbars" and check "Status Bar".

And to those who find the background color too bright, if you are using Internet Explorer 8 or above, try this.

    1. Open whatever page on this forum in your browser.

    2. Hit "F12" key on your keyboard. The Developer Toolbar should show up in a small window.

    3. On that small window, click on "Tools" on the top menu and select "Show Color Picker".

    4. Close the "Developer Toolbar" window and get back to your browser in which this forum is displayed. You will   see a tiny window with a image of a tiny pen thingy in it.

    5. Look at a box in the "Color Picker" window and move your cursor around in your browser in which this forum is displayed. You will see the exact same color shows up in that box. If not, press that tiny pen thingy and see it works.

    6. OK this is the important part. Point your cursor to the area that you find is too bright and click on the point.

    7. Make sure the same color is showing up in a box and check the 7-digit code starting with a symbol # (e.g. #F0F0F0). Hit "Copy and Close".

    8. Right-click on this link and select "Open in a new tab". http://hexpreview.com/ Delete "000000" in the box on the page and press the "V" key on your keyboard while holding down the "Ctrl" key.

    9. If the color that shows up is the same as the one you saw on this forum and equally bright, then the problem is not this forum but your monitor settings. Go adjust the settings. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/adjust-your-monitors-brightness-and-contrast If it's darker or different anyway, then the coding on this forum should be fixed.

I totally understand the need for advertising and do not begrudge it one bit. But that is WAY too much screen real estate to fill with advertising - taking uup fully 1/3 of my screen for ads won't work for me or anybody else.

Yes, I know, I can use adblock, but I really don't like to, I prefer to give places like this that I frequent my eyes if it's reasonable. I might even click an ad or two but what I see to the left right now, filled with ads, would be completely awful and possibly unusable.

This is a FORUM.  So people can COMMUNICATE.

Why aren't you working on putting in a quote button like every other forum in the universe has?  This one has never had one and the quote function makes it clear who you are replying to and what, and can prevent misunderstandings.

I have never been able to cut and paste on this forum and still can't. I shouldn't have a pop-up text box that I have to resize and have to "insert" - it should be right within this window with control V.  I can't believe that wasn't fixed.

This is just the oddest implementation for a forum I've ever seen. In my imagination, this forum was designed later than the articles and sort of grew beyond what anybody thought and I figured that's why many of the things most forums have are missing as it wasn't designed to be a busy forum originally.    So, when I heard that a redesign was happening, I thought it would be more like a forum, not less.  Boy, was I wrong.

The idea that this design is for mobile use makes no sense.  I participate in lots of other forums and they function perfectly on my iPhone and iPad.  And, there are tools like ForumRunner that people can use too.  This doesn't work as a forum in ANY device, because critical things that forums have are missing, like navigability.

You took the only useable, normal forum thing the old software had - the ability to easily browse topics and respond - away.

I'd like to know what tech firm is being used so that we can stay away from them.  My husband is a CIO and I don't want him to hire this company!  It's the worst implementation I have ever seen - you have non-technical. sick people downloading new browsers, resizing windows, doing crazy things to make this work for them.  It's kind of stunning that there are this many problems that seem to surprise the "tech team".

I have also noticed that there are now long periods of time between posts in the forums I frequent, so I think your users really ARE leaving.  You all have access to information I don't, so maybe I'm wrong and I hope I'm wrong.  But, I think you should pay attention to that.  We are not complaining just to complain - there are real problems here, and it's not just about bolding and colors.  This forum exists because people want to talk about cancer and share information and advice with others.  That basic function is now extremely difficult to do.  It's not a tweak that can be fixed, this is a basic design flaw.

I don't even WANT to learn how to do something that takes 9 steps Frown. Goodness, I'm a person who still has and uses a VCR and video tapes!

I will still frequent my favorite topics because I have made so many great friends here. And I am playing around with the rest of it and trying to have an open mind. But, to me,  the format does have a less warm and I don't have the 'I think I'll jump in here' feeling with it.

Athena, I agree it would be better to be able to go to our profile from the Dashboard, just as we could edit from the home page before.  Though now I see the My Profile button is at the top of the page so is only one button away so this is probably more to save people searching for buttons.

Oops, deleted this paragraph as my idea has already been implemented.  Hey, they read our minds!

For those members who haven't told us their platform, operating system and version, browser and version, and who are having problems (old and unresolved, or new since the recent changes), could you let us know your computer info? Despite all the technical testing and real-life usability testing with members, here are such variations in experiences that knowing your computer set-up can be helpful in troubleshooting.

    Thanks!

I suspect a lot of the variability is more about an individual's eyesight than their browser. Some people get headaches more easily from glare and trying to focus as they get older than others.  Would it be possible to change the colours for a couple of days to see if there are less headaches? Trial and error seems to be the best way to manage this since no one knows for sure what the exact cause is.

For a decade I've watched my mother tear up and suffer with her eyesight when trying to read a book or screen and know the problem is very real.  Thanks for all your efforts.

Windows 7 laptop, latest Firefox, Bifocals and no headaches but all bold is very jarring to read.

IE8 Windows XP - colour is fine - still annoyed at how large everything is and the wasted space between posts.

Haven't bothered to read this thread, TOO FEW POSTS ON EACH PAGE, and not worth my time to keep scrolling

so, someone might have already said this:

TERRIBLE USE OF SPACE - left side completely empty, TOO FEW POSTS PER PAGE, not worth my time to keep scrolling.

FORUM LISTING - impossible to use.  Have to click one, then go to a page with NOT ENOUGH POSTS ( see above!) and then go back to the DAMN PICK A FORUM option to get to another Forum.  Like trying to go the wrong way on a rotary/roundabout.  MUST HAVE A LIST OF FORUMS OPEN ALL AT ONCE - with the newest post in EACH FORUM, so we know what we want to check.

I am so frustrated with what BCO has done to these discussion boards, I'm not bothering to "play it forward" exept where I have already posted as a "fav place."

I realize there have been many complaints from the complainers about everything. before the forums changed... that you were responding to those complaints.  Honestly, the old forum was not all that bad.

I do miss the sense of camaraderie.. seeing the faces and avatars of familiar friends all assembled rather closely.  I find it hard to find people, miss the logistical ease of scrolling from forum to forum... and here i am complaining. I am on XP 7. and hope i can find this thread again.  I suppose i could save it in favorites.

If I use the CTR scroll function to reduce or enlarge the size of the font, i can geet the left side bar to actually dissappear.  the MENU box is up on the top then.  It's pretty convenient, but I've then lost the JUMP TO FORUM feature (kind of a tesseract to where you are going).

Windows 7 PC user here with tips that could help:

To get the text to use ALL of the space, try pressing CTRL + . If you press it a few times, the text of the posts will go all the way across the screen - at least for some of us.

I LOVE the large format. Helps my eyes.

Other fixes that could affect how you see other web sites too - not perfect, but they may help:

You can make things easier by changing your monitor settings (see buttons on monitor) to make things easier on your eyes. Windows 7 PC users and others, minimize all windows, right click on your desktop background and consider changing your screen resolution. It might distort other sites, but it's a option if you come here often.

Finally, can we stop complaining and making assumptions about BCO? It's getting really tiresome. Let's try to be constructive in our criticism - or found our own forum. Edited.

ETA: Apple - Sorry - I repeated some of what you said. We crossposted. :-)

Toshiba laptop running Window XP.  Browser is Google Chrome which I downloaded to get some of the features to work.  I was running Explorer 8, which I prefer.  I'm finding that the background colour for the posts is still too bright which makes it very hard on my eyes and the font size seems to have gotten smaller as well which makes the posts hard to read.  As much as I'm over the whole pink thing, the colours of the old format were much better for aging eyes.

9:42 a.m. CDT:  Everything is unchanged from what it was when I posted 15 hours ago--

    1) Page layout is full-width text. No nav bars, no drop-down menu. They were here yesterday morning, but then they disappeared.  CTRL+/CTRL- doesn't change the formatting -- just the text size.

    2) Background color is still off-white, rather than the nice beige/gray it was 24 hrs ago. Not blinding white, but makes it difficult to see navigation cues. Bold-face type introduces too much contrast on this near-white page.

    3) Breadcrumb trail is still missing from the top of the page. This is a RECENT PROBLEM. (Should I bold-face that?) Ever since the new format was implemented on Tuesday, there was always a breadcrumb trail. It disappeared mid-day yesterday and has been gone ever since.

    4) I'm getting tired of nit-picking. I'm also getting less tolerant of the monotonous, full-page layout I'm seeing since yesterday morning. It makes the forums, thread lists, and posts on a thread look like somebody's poorly organized grocery list.

I keep coming back here hoping to hear from the moderators that everything that can be fixed.....IS fixed....or will be FINALLY fixed shortly....

I'll just reiterate my biggest concern... Two words....TABLE FORMAT.

The bright color makes my eyes burn after reading about 10 posts.I miss the old BCO. Someone I know worked teaching computer use all over the country, and after he saw the new site compared to the old he agrees it is NOTuser friendly.

Hi Mods, one thing I've noticed is that pages don't "refresh"... (sorry, that's as far as my tech lingo goes Lol). Let's say I'm on the Active Topics menu and get interrupted, when I come back, there's no way to refresh the page ?  I have to select another Menu button and then return to Active Topics.  Am I missing something ?

    Hi Maud,

Are you on a PC or a Mac? If you're on a PC, you can refresh your page in IE by clicking the circle with the arrow in the browser bar at the top of your screen...

Let us know if that works!

Thanks Mods, I'm on a PC but in google chrome....don't know what the equivalent is to the key you mentioned in IE, thanks a bunch.  I hate to fiddle too much with the buttons, as I often can't trace back...just hit an X at the top of my left screen and don't know what that did...Yell

For the most part I'm not as displeased with the changes as some, but they've made some very valid points.

Not sure if this is a glitch.  My browser (Safari) spell check always worked before the change, I make a lot of typo's and being a perfectionist, I can't stand it when I submit something with lots of errors! I'm spending a lot of time rereading and fixing, never had to before.

Thanks, for responding so quickly to everyone, awesome job!

Hi glostagirl -- have you tried using the "abc" with a checkmark button in the text box when you go to post a reply? Is that the part that is not working for you?

I've been spoiled, I never had to use that button before, forgot it was there!  HA! The ABC button does work, I'll just have to get used to using it Embarassed.

My Safari spell check is on to ~ check spelling as I type ~ that's what doesn't appear to be functioning with the new format.

    Thanks
