New Format of BCO is a DISASTER

Susieq.... Harsh??? The DH worked on Wall Street and worked very closely with his programmers and users...who were traders. He began his career around the same time as you. What I am looking at here are amateurs. I remember the DH saying to me years ago that anyone who turned on their computer thought they were a computer expert. Obviously, that's not the case. There are computer experts and experienced web designers and then there is everyone else. The DH NEVER unveiled a program unless he was certain it would "work.". Millions of dollars were at stake and so was his job! He got paid the big bucks because the traders TRUSTED him and ultimately he delivered what they wanted and needed and he made them lots of money as well with his seamless integrated systems!

Hi All,
As many of you have noticed, we are experiencing technical glitches with the engine that delivers the articles related to your diagnosis and treatments. We sincerely apologize to all of you that this has happened.
We are turning off this service until we can fix the bugs and ensure that the articles you receive are relevant to your situation. Also, upon re-launch of this feature, we will have an opt-out possibility.
We really look forward to getting this important program up and running again soon! We'll keep you posted.
Best, Your Mods

Hi! do not like the new site. Too hard to navigate especially for new people. Before you could see and chose what you wanted on one page. Simple, compact
-
SallyO, if you click the Dashboard link at the bottom of any page, or from your Menu, you'll see the new version of My Home that groups your information on one page.
-
Voraciousreader and any others having font issue, could you please tell us what what operating system and browser you are using? That may help us to diagnose it! Thank you!!

I had the problem with the number still showing up after I read all the posts in my favorites.
I finally went to each individual favorite and clicked on page 1 of each favorite and the numbers went away. I then deleted those threads that I don't go very often and could live without and deleted them hoping that irritating red number does not show up as often:)
Hope that made sense:)

BCO...got a mastectomy and this is reconstruction. I've learned it takes a few surgeries before the new breast is finish so it will be for the new look here.
When I first came to bco it was as easy as ABC to navigate. It was the easiest forum I've been on. Hopefully this will be too. As you scroll down way too much light...too much gray. Much better toward the top when you have a little color. I like color. Gray is depressing!

I'm not particularly happy with all the changes and in particular not being able to see how many comments and how many reads per post. This feature let me know if the post was a new one or not. I also like to know who the original poster is when I read a thread and that seems to have been dropped as well. I agree with all the others re the loss of the table format.................please bring it back and save my poor arthritic fingers from all that scrolling!
-
Amen, Chrissyb! I agree wholeheartedly with you! I posted a couple of pgs ago, too. HOPING the mods will be able to read ALL the comments, and get our bc.org back to how it used to be. Was quite wonderful, then. Now I hate that I introduced bc.org to a cancer survivor I met yesterday. Wonder if she will join in, after seeing the format it is in?
-
Mods, get your money back. The people you hired to update this website have ruined it. Cut your losses and go back to the old format. It's not just all the bugs, it's the entire format.
-
Try changing the zoom level in the bottom right corner of your computer from 100% to 125% or 150%
-
chrissy...I have a boo-boo on my pointer finger from all the scrolling!
-
NNBBFL....my "view" to "zoom" is in my upper left corner......

I just want to give kudos to the Developers and mods for attempting to track all the suggestions and respond in a way that suits everyone. So far I can see many changes have occured... And my hat is off to you all for attempting to please everyone. Especially with conflicting suggestions.
NOW... As a "professional" in "computers" and more specifically a "web developer and designer" I want to say some things.
1. Beta testing with a control group may have been a better way to do this, yet it would still have been met with anger and upset with those who were not consulted feeling left out.
2. Comparison between web development standards, programming, and coding spanning over decades is irrelevant and illogical. I started working in web development in a time when designers thought it was acceptable to embed images, and design into tables. If you know code as it applies today then you would be aware of the vast improvements made in the output by this site.
Not to mention you are speaking in terms of Windows servers vs Linux servers, etc.
3. This might seem like something little but in the grand scheme of things it is what is allowing the modifications to be made with real time adjustments. It also allows those requiring a screen reader to make use of the site without hearing things like "Table - Image - No Title - Image - No Title - Image - No Title - Table - Image - No Title" for 4 minutes before content starts. Though I am positive those not in need of this won't see it as being an upside. I see it as being an upside for those who've come to need it.
4. Comments about the left column width have been made. I am sure the developers will make those adjustments as things go on.
5. In "standards complaint" design and development... We as a profession code for those browsers which show code as it is written. Unfortunately specific browsers show code as their own developers assume it should be shown, instead of how it is written. The balance is something that comes as browsers are tested but finding out about all complications in advance is impossible. Browsers can change output based on version of browser, version of operating system, and user tools. The code is clean, and styling in browsers that show true to code are clean at this point. The task in front of the developers is to accomodate all other variances of browsing.
Once upon a time I explained the differences in browsers from a developers point of view as such:
Firefox vs. Internet Explorer is sort of like setting a table for a holiday dinner. You have a solid table, everything should be beautiful. You get everything set in place... And then just before company comes in to sit down you realize that "Windows The Puppy" has done the deed under the table and the only clue you have is something just stinks a little so you have to lift the table cloth and clean the mess up. Darned if you shouldn't have had a pet "Fox" which is always true to it's nature.
This of course got chuckles at the time but maybe it can help those struggling to understand why things are taking time to take a breath, and wait out the growing pains.

Agree that navigation side bar too wide and I would like to be able to see many more active topics on one screen as before. Also my e-mail program couldn't cope with the influx of e-mail notifications to my favourite topics today. I have never requested e-mail notifications and didn't receive them before. I haven't read all the previous posts .
If it's not broke don't fix it is my reaction
-
Shell - I am a senior software engineer who works on Insurance Claims software which is delivered via a url, so my experiences are very current - our screens look a lot lot better than these. We certainly never have any wasted space and navigation is simple.

Susieq fair enough. I won't dispute there are things I would change with the design. *blush* I offered constructive criticism a couple pages back without trying to step on toes.
I actually even said maybe allow users to select between themes. I'd suggested the option of a right column as people were upset to start reading after 33% of the page, and that they adjust the percentage for the column width...
With that said... It truly wouldn't be complicated to code the old style, and theme to the new structure because of the way it is coded. It would be less semantically correct, but would allow the user to select what was comfortable. It might take a day or two in the coding process but it should essentially be doable to run the menu inline, center the content, and assuming they are intending to line the left with the ad space they require... Split the ad content spacing to 2 columns which would allow it to split left/right with content centered.
There are some upsides to the basic coding and structure and many are not looking at current standards in comparison. They just need to put the right look on things.

The development team is looking at all the comments we send them, and changes are being incorporated carefully, with lots of testing before they're launched. We do appreciate your comments, ideas and suggestions, even if they can't always be implemented to be an ideal solution for everyone. Thank you!
-
To me, it's not so much that this is a Massive Mistake. It's that moderators are completely ignoring questions and comments regarding return to the user-friendly format that best supported the majority of members. The Moderators' stonewalling reminds me of Susan Komen execs re their Planned Parenthood debacle. They persisted with their folly until it became evident that their supporters and many employees were abandoning the ship. The whole situation is becoming more painful by the hour. Mods, we deserve acknowledgement and answers. This feels like a revictimization of the victim.
-
Mods, I appreciate that, but could we have at least some preliminary feedback on what looks to be possible as a change and what does not? This will spare people the bother of insisting on something that, for whatever reason, is not going to happen.
If our feedback is influencing the process, it would be nice to know how. I know it's impossible to please everyone, but more information from you would be nice.
-
Fair points, and some changes requested by members are already in place. The Articles feature has been suspended for now, and which will return with the choice to opt out, and with articles that will better match members' situations.
We don't have exact timelines for some of the other requests, but you will see them as they're developed.
-
Yey about the articles!
-
Thanks for all your efforts, Mods. It is very appreciated. Sorry you're getting so much flak.
-
Mods, would it possible to provide a link, perhaps through the menu or side naviagation to a list of what has been fixed. I'm concerned that folks are frustrated and might not be reading items where they can see the updates. For example I saw some posts that talked about the error trying to get to the profile after that had been fixed.
Just a thought to help encourage folks who are reluctant to dip their toes back into the stream to see that things are improving.
-
I don't need time lines for when things will be finished - what I think would be helpful is knowing what issues are you all actually going to consider changing - as in :
Will there be color changes so people don't get headaches? color background options?
Is the negative space going to be used for ads as many have asked?
Will you restore the original posters questions to threads?
Will there be a fix for the scrolling issues?
What about hitting backspace and not going anywhere?
Could there be a step by step guide on where to find things?
When I came on the site as a newbie I didn't need to ask questions to find my way. I tried going on and being as objective as possible and I quickly got bogged down and a headache. I agree with other you all are not going back but what concessions are you going to make with the site? I understand you are getting blasted again and again but I think it would stop some of the over posting of the same issues if we just knew what items you all will work on. Hope that makes sense.... sort of like with my kids - if I answer their questions without stalling it settles them down and they know I'm listening and paying attention to them. Thanks
-
This is worse than awful. do they know some of us are OLD and just got used to using this s*** and now this awful remake? Please....why was this done?
-
Don't know anything about how to design websites but I really dislike this too. BCO now seems all disjointed and has lost its warmth. At first i thought I was just stupid and not able to catch onto new techno things easily, then I read all the comments and yes, it disappoints me, makes me disinclined to come here, and is a disaster.
Oh, so I just went to look at my profile, and you've got an ancient dead email address, but when I tried to correct it to my current address, it came up saying"that email is already in use, please find another" - well, that email that is already in use is mine! People seem to be complaining about getting emails - but I haven't been getting any, so whatever they're talking about was a mystery. But since, if you are sending emails, they're going to a dead adresss, which I cannot correct, I guess I'll never have the too-many-emails problem. I don't know why people are complaining about the teensy size of font - this is gigantic! It fills the whole page.
Finally, what is all that grey space to the left? I feel like I'm lost in outer space.
