Hi BC Boarders,

My name is Bill, and I was diagnosed with BC almost a year ago.  Been through the treatment ringer and I am steadly getting healthier every day.  I just wanted to say Hi, and offer any insight to those who may be curious about breast cancer in men.

 Thanks,

Bill.

    Hi Bill,

Thank you for posting.   I do have a question that I have been pondering about for some time.  Although I am BRCA neg. there is a lot of breast cancer on my mom's side of the family, not to mention cancer in general on both sides of the family.  I am the first one of my generation to be diagnosed.

My question is, how did you discover your BC?  I have two sons (one in college, the other graduating HS in another year), and am now getting worried that they may be at a higher risk of BC and don't know what type of advise I should be giving them to be vigilent about breast cancer.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Wonderful that you are getting stronger every day.

    Hi PM_W,

I discovered my BC by detecting a lump just behind my left nipple.  I actually found it severl months (8) before I said or did anything about it.  I originally attributed it to weight loss.  But my skin started to pull inward, and I knew that it was time to say something about it.  For your sons, it would make sense to me (and I actually promote this when I talk to men about BC) to ask their primary care physicians to perform a general breast exam.  It's private and during a general checkup can be performed.  That's what I would say to my sons/daughters...

     Hope this helps!

    Bill.

The problem in men is that they do nothing when they discover the lump.  Finding the lump is not the problem.  When I discovered my lump I waited untill I needed to see the doc for other reasons and then mentioned it in passing.  He, and another doc a year later, both said that is was nothing.  Almost 2 years after I first noticed the lump, I pushed for further testing.  Even doctors need to be aware.

I totally agree, physicians in general need to be aware of the posibility of breast cancer in men.  I heard that some are not aware of it, but that shouldn't stop men for having themselves checked.  That's where it starts...

I agree. Had my uncle not died of breast cancer 18 years ago, I probably wouldn't have reacted at all. Knowing only a little about male breast cancer because of that, I dashed off to the doc within a couple of days. I owe my uncle a lot.

Yes, men need to be aware that breast cancer can happen to them too! My Dad found a lump but did nothing until it broke through the skin. I don't think he'd ever heard of male breast cancer. Thanks to all of the men who are speaking out about it, and doing so with guts and smarts!

My name is Rodney, and I found a limp in my left breast under the nipple.  I had the doctor check it out, and she ordered a ultrasound.  The results came back that it was a fibrous and granular tumor.  I have an appointment this Monday to see a surgeon and to possibility have it removed, and tested for cancer.  Do I need to worry about cancer, because I read that men don't get benign tumors?

Thanks for your post.  It helps a lot to know that there are other men in the same situation I am in.

    Hi Rodney,

Welcome, you probably have 5 billion things going on in your head and have put yourself on auto-pilot until you get to the point where you will know for sure what your lump is.  It's OK, I've been there and want to tell you that you are doing the right thing.  Don't worry about a single thing until you get your diagnosis and decide on what the next steps are.  In fact, you should treat yourself to a nice dinner out and eat absolutely anything you want.  You may not enjoy it, but it will be a distraction and you will be doing something nice for yourself.  On Monday the surgeon will most likely perform a biopsy, and it will take a few days or so to get the results back.  You are on the right path, just take it slow until you hear back about the biopsy...then consult with your doctor or the surgeon about the next steps.  Let us know how you make out...

    Hang in there!

    Bill.

Well I went to see the surgeon yesterday and did not get the news that I was expecting.  He want to wait and watch it and do another ultrasound with a mammogram in a few months.  As for the lump he said to wait a little bit and if I want it out to let them know.  I guess I will wait until the first of July and see what is happening and then look at having it out.

    Hey Rodney,

Couple of questions; what were you expecting to hear from your surgeon?  By your words, it seems as if he is not very concerned.  Whats important, is how you feel about it...if you are OK with waiting then fine.  If you are still concerned, don't be afraid to move forward with it and get another opinion.  How much experience has your surgeon had with breast tissue lumps?

I'm not trying to scare you, in fact it's great that you are aware of the possibilities, and you are investigating.  I just don't want you to be left in the lurch by your physicians for the next few years, only to find out down the road that it is cancer.

    Keep me posted...

    Bill.

    Bill,

I guess I was going to the surgeon with the understanding that they were going to schedule surgery to remove the lump.  In some ways I am happy that we are not doing the surgery at the moment, but I am still nervous about the lump.  The surgeon did say that if I wanted the lump removed in the near future, all I needed to do was to call and set up an appointment, and stop one of the meds I am on.  He does want to check in out in a few months, so he is concerned about it, and seemed to know what he was talking about.  He did do a great exam that I was happy with.  I guess I will do the waiting thing for a few months, even though it is hard, and then go from there, unless something changes in the next month.

Thanks for you words of encouragement.  I will let you know what happens in the next month or so.

    Rodney

    To Everyone here,

An update to what is happening to myself.  Thursday Aug 30, I am having surgery to have the lump removed and a biopsy done.  It will be nice to finally know what it is so I can go from there, instead of wondering.  Will let everyone know the outcome and so as I know.

    Update from the surgery today.

Surgery went well with no compilations.  As far as the diagnoses, the surgeon thinks it is not cancer, but we have to wait to get the pathologist report the first part of next week.  will update as soon as I have that report.

Thanks for all your thoughts and concerns for me.
