New Format of BCO is a DISASTER
Comments
-
Hey Mods- If the new format, especially the peculiarly empty space of gray on the left, is going to be all about ad space how about we all promise to donate 10 bucks and you give us our old BCO back?
-
I'm having major Deja`Vu! I find it very interesting remembering the initial responses of members to the complete overhaul of the BCO forums which was done in..... when was it?....late 2007 I believe. At that time I read hundreds of the same types of comments vehemently opposing the new format, declaring it impossible to use and that BCO would end up driving their member base away. That "hated" forum interface was the same one that today everyone is wishing was back! The old forum design was not perfect and neither is this one, but the transition to a new format is always distressing and will take some time as the bugs get worked out and the developers can make changes based on member input.
I have not yet had time to thoroughly review all the new features but will try to add my suggestions when I do. Just off the bat, you will notice that I did complete the new Treatment and Multiple Diagnoses sections which have now all been added to my public signature (which I selected since I wanted to see the end result). As you may realize, if all members made their full dx and treatment histories public to be displayed in our signatures, the scrolling issue to read posts will become greatly more problematic. The concept of being able to enter this information somewhere is good, but I think trying to display it all in a signature is going to use up too much valuable real estate in each post.
I for one, believe the major issues with the new format will get addressed but have no expectation or even wish for the old forums to be "brought back". If the ability to generate more revenue so that BCO can continue to provide the great service it does for us is now dependent on advertising and reformatting the forums then so be it. Nothing comes free in this world and I think that this is a small price to pay for continuing access to the great information and community resources that BCO provides.
-
I want to add...I HATE the whole new profile format. I liked it when I could see my former posts, and where I had been recently so I didn't have to look it up. I could just click there and follow the threads I was then interested in. Now I would have to go find them which isn't always easy to do.
I hate that I lost my bio, and the suggested reading is not necessary as I can find what I want on my friend google.
-
No problems here with speed of access using my laptop or ipad. I have not had any problems navigating around my usual places. My only negative is the recommended articles. The three on my page all related to metastastic TN bc. Does BCO know something I don't?
I realize such recommendations are just generated from what we have looked at; perhaps this feature is not needed? I think it's sad if people have lost their bio info - some had put a lot of thought into it.
-
I'm guessing we were all hit with all 53 articles to begin with. Then when, and if, you actually read any of them the future articles will be more appropriate. Kind of like the ads on most web pages.
One thing I noticed is if I go to my "Favorite Topics" not all my threads are showing up as unread despite there being new posts on them.
With so much scrolling it would be nice if they'd have a button on the bottom of the screen that would take you back up to the top.
-
Evie, to get to your biography, just go to...
My Profile > Settings > Scroll down to your Biography
-
Joy, I just found it. I am happier. Thank you. Is this going to be something someone going to my profile or clicking onto my name will easily find?
-
I really hate it too. It's just the last straw, one more thing I have to cope with. One more thing I have to learn. The Dashboard doesn't look anything like My Home. Too much scrolling, not efficient use of space (that from a former journalist who knows.) It seems I've lost my bio too. I'm tired.
Please go back to the old format. In the meantime, I'm taking a holiday from BC.org.
-
This new design has erased the immediate sense of community I experienced while using BCO. When I looked at the posts, I could see all the user names, recognize familiar names, zoom in on newbies who needed a response and sense the "interest' in a topic by the number of views and responses. The forums were clearly delineated (except in active topics), giving me a sense of where I 'belonged'.I found the site very user friendly, even as a complete newbie. The allocation of donated resources to this new, alienating design is unfortunate in my view. I understand the need for advertising, but ruining the best breast cancer forum on the internet in order to accommodate more ads is surely not what was intended. Please restablish as much of the old site as possible.
-
The other issue I see is if everyone adds their dx, treatments and surgeries we are going to be doing even more scrolling because all of their information will be as long as their posts are. Not sure what the answer is for that.
-
Yes, Evebarry. I just clicked on your name and your full biography is there for reading.
**Mods - again for emphasis, note the issue with the Tx and Dx history attaching to our signature when made public. Granted, each individual line of information can be selected to be either Public or Private, but shouldn't there be a limitation to the amount of information that can be displayed in a signature? If the information entered is set to Private so that it does not show in the signature, can it still be viewable by others visiting my profile?
-
I don't have a problem with BCO trying to accommodate mobile users. Think about it. 25% is about the same amount of women here who are HER2+. 25% is a large amount. I don't think BCO ignored the rest of us. It's not easy to make everyone happy.
-
Things I've discovered since yesterday:
1. The line spacing within posts seems better -- there's sllightly more space between lines. Last night, the lines seemed crowded together, but today, they're more readable.
2. The font size in this Compose box is larger. This is much more legible, easier on the eyes. Thanks!
3. The bio's are back, or maybe they never left. Someone upstream explained how to find your own bio, by going to your "Settings" and scrolling down a few lines. You can check to see what your bio looks like to others (sort of) by checking theirs. Just click on someone's username, and you'll be taken to their Profile page. The page contains an avatar, some familiar info and links, the bio, tx & dx data, and a bunch of recent posts. That's pretty much what we saw before on a member's page; only now the layout seems cleaner (IMHO). I find these new Profile pages easy to read. The odd thing is that I can't see what my own page looks like to others -- all I can see is the list of individual entries on that page. Oh, well... I took pretty much everything off there anyway, for security reasons.
4. You can permanently remove those unwanted links to "Recommended Articles," but it's tedious. First, you have to send each article to your "Archive". (Wouldn't it be nice to be able to do this in batches -- with check boxes -- or, as a whole file?) Then you need to go to your "Archive" page (see the link at the bottom of your Profile page), and "Delete" each article. That removes the link permanently. It's crazy that there is no way to batch these, but it did relieve some of my tension to be clicking that "Delete" button 49 times.
5. The algorithm being used to select articles for us is ignorant. Only half a dozen of the 49 articles offered to me had anything to do with my type of cancer. Almost all the articles dealt with treatment, even though I haven't entered any info on my "Treatments" page and likely never will. As others have noted, many of the articles recommended for me were irrelevant -- they talked about new treatments for advanced BC, treatments for mets, management of triple-negative BC, management of node-positive BC or micromets, etc., none of which I had. BCO, if you're going to continue to send us articles against our wishes, you could at least try to make them relevant. Megadotz's suggestions are great: provide a "Clear all articles" button (and/or checkboxes and batched deletion), and offer us the ability to opt out of the articles entirely.
6. I finally found the “Community Rules” and links to personal pages ("Member List," "My Favorite Topics," “Private Messages” etc.), but it wasn’t easy. They were listed among a row of links at the very bottom of each Discussion Board page; and they were also available via the “Menu” button – that big, blue button at the top right-hand corner of the Board pages. Some of those links ought to be front-and-center in the wasted space at the top of each Board page. (It's crazy to have to search with multiple clicks for the Community Rules and the Favorites list.) It’s interesting that the list of links to the Rules, Private Messages, Favorite Topics, etc., can only be found via the “Discussion Boards” pages -- not via the "My Profile" page. The links at the bottom of the "My Profile" page and the Menu items available via that page are totally different -- they lead back to the general BCO educational part of the website. Why?
7. I turned off all email notification except for new PM's, which I've always had "on". I haven't received any emails from BCO since the change-over yesterday. We'll see.
8. There seem to be huge inconsistencies in what different members are seeing on their computer screens. People keep talking about a blank space or gray bar on the left side of their screen, but there is no blank space on either side of my screen. The text spans fully across the page, edge-to-edge. Maybe that’s a Mac thing -- more than 95% of the time, I'm using BCO on a MacBook Pro laptop with Firefox. And, people are recommending that the "navigation tabs" be moved back to the top of the page. What navigation tabs? There is a breadcrumb trail across the top of each Board page, as there used to be (and for which I’m grateful)… but, I'm not seeing any tabs. Has this new Board format been tested with all the commonly used browsers?
It's almost lunchtime here in the Central Time Zone. I hope our Mods aren't feeling too battered. It seemed they were really optimistic about the changes, but most of the feedback has been negative. I'm sorry for that.

Mods maybe you need some of us to take screen shots of what we see and tell you what browser (and version), OS, platform we are using?
-
Thanks all for all your help and suggestions. We are hoping to improve the performance and experience.Lago, when you are describing a problem or a technical issue that you see with the new format, it would be great if you could send us screen shots and tell us your browser and OS information.
-
I'm using Firefox 12.0 on an iMAC running MAC OS 10.5.8 Here is what I see:
FORUM MAIN PAGE
FORUM POSTS PAGE
NOTE: I had used the Jump to a Forum feature when I took the screenshot so that is why you see the open dropdown menu on the left.

Great point Linda and worth repeating. Doesn't surprise me one bit. When I first came on BCO, it took awhile for me to navigate the site. I don't think it would have been any different a feeling for me if I joined for the first time today with this format. It's just different. You'll get used to it. There are still kinks being worked out. The mods have said they will be taking in comments/suggestions and make changes where they can.
I just wanted to send some positive vibes to the mods as they are getting bombarded with negativity. As with most things...it's the people that are having issues that have the loudest voices. The ones that are slap happy tend not to comment.

Susan... Or.... Some folks are so flummoxed they don't know how to respond or worse.... They just upped and left. I took a hike from the young survivors website after they updated it. I have to say that theheart.org's website is always evolving SLOWLY for the better. Actually, when I look back at it from years ago, I am amazed at how GREAT it is.
-
How the heck do you see a Jump to a Forum box? My screen is bright white - and the posts go from edge to edge. I don't have a drop down box to get to a certain forum
-
I guess my issue is stating you're working to improve the speed, performance, etc. I don't want it improved. I WANT THE OLD BOARD BACK!
Just admit the change was a mistake and correct it. lol
I don't want to hear how you're working to correct the issues when it's not going to give me the layout I want back. I go to other boards all the time. I'm used to seeing different board layouts. This is by far the WORST.
I want to know whose bright idea this was...Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
-
I guess the reality is that I can't imagine BCO ditching this new format entirely and going back to the old system. So it doesn't help to do anything other than give them some constructive suggestions for what it is now. And if people hate it that much they certainly can choose to go somewhere else.
Honestly, what are we all here for? Initially to help ourselves when we are first diagnosed. To get feedback/advice/information from others that are having similiar experiences relating to breast cancer. To partake in a few fun threads where we have made friendships/connections. To help new/old members by responding in particular boards you chose to frequent.
I don't see how this new format prevents any of that from still happening? Sure it will take a couple days to get used to it...but I just don't understand some of the panic?
-
Wow. This explains a lot.
Jancie, my screen looks just like yours -- no "Jump to a Forum" box, no nice tabs along the left side. What Linda's screen displays in the gray/white box is all I see on my screen.
Thanks for the screen shot, Linda. And, you're using Firefox on an iMac, so it isn't just a problem with Mac or Firefox for me. Maybe it is my outdated version of Firefox and/or my outdated version of the Mac OS. <sigh>
I tried to post a screen shot yesterday, but it came out all fuzzy here, even though it looked fine with my image viewer and in Photobucket.
otter
ETA: Here's attempt #3 at posting a screen shot of the "All Topics" page as it appears on my laptop. I'm bringing it over from Photobucket.
[Nope. It comes up completely out of focus, even though it looks fine in Photoshop and Photobucket. Oh, well... I can't capture a higher-res screen shot so I guess I'll forget it and go somewhere else to play.]
-
Otter - I have just a regular desktop computer that I use. I go through Internet Explorer - not Firefox.
I wish the background of the posts could be changed to a very light blue or something. This bright white is killing my eyes - literally I get a headache if I stay on here for too long and my eyes start going blurry as they get tired trying to adjust to the brightness.
-
Because, as others have stated ad nausuem, it's not USER FRIENDLY. If it's not USER FRIENDLY, people are going to go elsewhere. That, ALSO, has been stated. That's my whole point. I don't want to come here anymore due to the change. It's hard to read. Period.
And to inflict this kind of change on breast cancer patients, who have to deal with enough change, seems a tad insensitive and ridiculous. Especially when the change isn't for the better. My blood pressure goes up just coming her now because I'm so irritated. I'm hoping that they will go back. Hoping they actually listen to the people they claim to serve.
I just can't fathom how they spent money on this. What a flipping waste. So, yes, if it doesn't change, I'm out. I don't have a history here of being inflammatory or being argumentative. But this change irritates the holy ish out of me.
But when the majority hates it, you've got a big problem.
-
I'm glad I'm not the only one! It's confusing as hell in here! I really feel for the newbies, I don't know how they navigate on this site. Yesterday it kept saying there were a number of new updates to my favorite topics...when there were none. I'm left wondering, were there and the threads weren't updating or was it a glitch in the notification system. That's not even my issue. Navigating is pointless. Too much work. I'm glad my mastectomy ladies started a private FB group. But that leaves the newbies to fend for themselves.
Bring back the old format!
Michelle

Agree, it is very bad. The issue seems to be space problems, size problems, and logistics problems.
It reminds me of a grocery store remodeling the way they do with wanting to slow people down around certain areas. but why? unless all of that empty space on the left is going to be used for advertising?
still, maybe a good end result, at least in my case, I will spend less time on this site, and more time on my tennis game!
-
The new colors make it difficult to read. I find the new color scheme very sterile and depressing. The old colors were bright and cheerful & there was more contrast.
I have cleared my cache, logged out & logged back in & the notifications for new topics is still wrong. It always shows that I have 5 more favorite threads with unread replies than I actually do,
Please find a way for us to opt out of recommended articles. There are 32 articles recommended for me & the vast majority do not apply to me at all. The topics recommended include fertility, pregnancy, HER +, stage IV---it is a big random mess of topics that have nothing to do with me or my diagnosis. I don't want to save them or archive them & I have no intention of reading them. I don't like that I can't get rid of the notification at the top of the page.
I liked the old "My Home" because that is what it was--everything I wanted to access easily was right there on that page.
Consider adding a feature to hide sig lines. With the new diagnosis/treatment/surgery info some sig lines are ridiculously long. Why not just keep that stuff in someone's profile or give us the option. I don't need to see all of your medical history in every single post--if I need a refresher I can see it in your profile.
-
Mods I see the same thing as LindaLou53. I am on a PC desktop, Firefox 11.0, Windows 7
I also see the same thing on Google Chrome and IE 9.0.8
So for those of you who are not seeing this please post a screen shot and explain what type of computer/phone, browser and version as well as the operation system/version. It will really help the techies out.

I thought I was going crazy yesterday because I couldn't log on to BCO. When I finally did I was like, "What happened?" Couldn't find anything ... I've learned to maneavur around pretty well but I'll add my voice to what others have mentioned:
1) I hate the color. It is sterile and reminds me of the room where my mom received her chemo. Colors can have a powerful effect on our emotional well being and the greenish/gray color is depressing. I can't stand it!
2) I too don't like the large gray area to the left ... it is disorienting to the eye because I want to read and write from the left to write ... not from the middle. It is just weird.
3) The scrolling, scrolling, scrolling to find anything is time consuming and frustrating. The other format at least you could see more and didn't have to scroll as much. This current layout is cumbersome and not efficient. It is actually HARDER to find the information, not the intent, I'm sure of the programmers.
-
I'm using a MAC, safari 5.1.5 brower.
Also ... I had no problem whatsoever using/seeing the old form on my Droid phone. Don't understand how this 'upgrade' is better for phones?
