April/May 2012 Chemo hang out

Thank you, everyone, for all the information and tips! I will ask for whatever they'll give me tomorrow to numb the port area. My tummy has been sensitive since diagnosis, and it's been a struggle to eat normally, so I don't know how it's going to react to the chemo tomorrow. It makes sense that as soon we're done with the steroids, we crash. They should get me to work on Thursday and Friday, but we'll see about Monday.
-
I just updated my profile, so I'm testing it out.
-
OK, let's try again - I didn't realize you have to change the status to public.
-
Sandik- Started my period five days after my first chemo. It was more uncomfortable right before it started than after it started. Now I have a little rememberance from it... a few chin pimples. I used to get them off and on before I had chemo so they aren't unexpected. Crazy hormones..... Good Luck with the 2nd chemo---- minimal side effects!!!!!
-
mb1024- I ate bland food starting a few days before my first infusion (baked chicken, rice, mashed potatoes, crackers ) easy stuff on the tummy. Hope you get some food in that tummy because it can make a difference how you feel after the chemo. Best of luck tomorrow with your chemo!!!!!
-
I had BMX with reconstruction on 4/27/12. 2/17 nodes involved. I just came from oncologist who said chemo is highly recommended and that I should also talk to a RO. I don't know why, but I'm more freaked out by that than the chemo. Anyway, she said I should probably get a second opinion about the chemo. I really liked her and she is very highly recommended by other doctors and patients. Did any of you get a second opinion regarding chemo or did you just go with the first doctor you saw?
-
@ Marcia - I got 2 opinions after all tests were back including oncotype and they both agreed with my score, grade and age that chemo was in order. Initially my primary said ACx4 then 12 Taxols but the second opinion was thru the U of P and they said TCx6. By the time I got back to primary she's also switched to TCx6 so I was happy that everybody was in agreement. I was a little nervous that my primary was going overboard with no nodal involvement and the heart risk on AC so I was happy when everyone agreed.
-
I had my first AC treatment today --got done at 4. Came home, voted, ate some waffles for dinner. 6:30 I started to feel a little funny in the stomach. 7:30 I decided to take a generic compazind pill. 45 seconds later I threw up 3 times in 1 or 2 minutes. So I waited a few minutes and took another pill. I assumed I puked the 1st one up. How soon should I feel better? How quickly should the pill work? I go tomorrow for the neulasta shot so I can talk to my onco nurse.

That happened to me after my first treatment I called dr on call and was given zofran, that stopped the nausea and vomiting quickly.
They gave me emend for my second treatment which I had yesterday and it has been so much better so far. -
Dance- yes i was asking that. It didn't post on the comment like I meant.
I am on AC+T and have perfect clear skin. I had a pimple coming up on my forehead that went back down the same day. -
Thanks tweetyb! I think the second pill is starting to work, along with water crackers and ginger ale. I called the doctor on call and he said to continue with the pills I have unless I vomit again. Whatever dude! Definitely addressing this tomorrow. I just want to sleep (not because of the chemo but because I have gotten up at 7am for the last week and I am soooo not a morning person!).
-
Melrose, I had my period for my last surgery. I should have gotten it again last week. But, yep, here it is! Awesome! Haha

Glad you are starting to feel better, so not fun. I have similar diagnosis as you, are you doing the chemo then surgery then more chemo? That is what I am having followed by radiation. Long haul, I am trying to take it one day at a time, but so hard. Hope you get some sleep -
Krazy,
Try small meals but more often. I was afraid to eat the first few days. I think that was most of my problem. I didnt eat, then would feel funny. Even if its 1 bite. Then 20 minutes later another bite. -
Hey ladies , finished my 1st round of AC today....got a little nervous about the chemo while pregnant, then remembered that all my reading and my drs. Have reassured me that it would be fine.
Got loads of pre meds, steroid, 2 anti nausea meds.....
Came straight to where im staying, had a bowl of fresh fruit: pineapple banana and papaya and a tall glass of watermelon juice.
Went to bed for about 3 hours....woke up and had dinner.
SE so far: tired but not sleepy, headache, heartburn....can't seem to get back to bed tho
Hope you all have a restful night and best wishes to all getting infused tomorrow. -
PositivityRocks - glad you checked back in. All the SEs you described are pretty much the same as what I had on the evening of my treatment. Hopefully tomorrow you will be able to take the steroid in the morning (that's when they had me take it) and you'll be able to sleep better. Good for you for eating all that fruit!
-
Tweety, thanks for your encouragement! Chemo now, then surgery, then I don't have a clue. I believe she will want to re-assess. I did get the BRCA test taken today and will know something at my next onco appointment.
Sandik, I promise I will try small meals! But crackers sound awfully good just hardly real food. I like positivity's fruit plate. Nice that your SE's don't include nausea with the pregnancy. I wish you easy and managable SE. I forgot I have some bolt house smoothie down there. Might try those later. -
Hello all,
Just an update, I was scared to death going into my first round of chemo yesterday, but I have to say it was nothing to be stressing about. Not sure how the side effects are going to be, but I'll get through them. The first thing I noticed was that I did get a headache about 2 hours after chemo, and here it is 3:30 the next morning, and I still have a head, also, plus the fact that I am writing this at 3:30 in the morning, I am having a hard time sleeping, but other than that and being a lil queasy every now and then, I am doing pretty good. Thanks for all the encouraging words of wisdom that everyone gave me, it helped tremendously. Please keep it up and help with any tips on any side effects that I do post. My cocktails are the 4 AC treatments, and the nestal** shot (forgot how to spell it) for now, then 12 taxol treatments. Again thanks for all to this group.

Wildflower...don't forget about taking Claritin (if approved by MD) prior to Neulasta and then 7 days post to help decrease bone pain. Glad to hear things went well for you yesterday!!! sorry to hear about the headache...could be Zofran if you are taking it. P.S. Sleeping pills helped me incredibly. It's so important to get rest as I know my body heals trememendously while sleeping.
-
Sandik- Glad to hear your period appeared. I know I was relieved when mine came because I knew I'd feel physically better plus I knew if I didn't have it, it may be worse the next time it did appear. YAY ( I guess)
Wildflower2828- Don't know if you know about taking Claritan to help with the pain from the Neulasta shot.
Good to hear that everyone is doing her best to handle the side effects as quickly as possible. If you just had your infusion, keep drinking lots of water to help flush the chemo through and also keep eating those small meals to keep your tummy happy. It is a lot easier to keep the side effects under control and to a minimum before they take over and make you feel really really yucky. We are so much stronger together through this. it is not longer we can do this--- We are doing this!!!!!
Great day to all and minimal SE's!!!

Thanks Dancetrancer,
Yes I did take Zofran yesterday, and am suppose to take it this morning, and this evening. Would say that I hope it doesn't give me another headache, but I still have a little one from yesterday. I have not thrown up, and after reading some of the posts, am very thankful. I drank a lot of fluids, juices, water, flavored water, had watermelon, don't know if that might had helped me with that or not, but haven't thrown up. Thanks for the tip about the Clariton, when the doctor prescribe it?, or is it something that I can just pick up, I think I did hear that they gave you benadryl before the shot though, and do they also prescribe the sleeping pills, or is that otc as well?, I know I need some I didn't sleep but for very short briefs all night, nothing steady. Again thanks for help.

Wildflower, looks like we are on the xa t same chemo schedule. My 4 AC are dose dense. Yours? Glad you made through. Chemo infusion is a walk in the park; it's these damn SE that kick our asses!
My dad said, lovingly and reassuringly, "hey, if 9 year old little girls can do this chemo stuff, i know you can." so I keep remembering little children enduring this, so scared and unsure and remind myself I will get through this. -
Krazycat,
Very good way of looking at it. Thankfully I haven't had to bad of side effect yet, other then the headache and the insomnia, but whose to say that I won't get sick, but for now, I am just drinking a lot of fluids, and praying and keeping my fingers crossed that I don't. Would love to still be able to take care of my 5 year old daughter on my own during the day, since she's not in school yet, and then daddy can take over after he gets home. I have 3 chemo meds that are injected into my IV slowly from syringe, then I have a small IV bag. Hope that is what you mean by dose dense. Hoping they will give me something for the bone pain once I get the shot, so the insurance will cover it, that is something that I am really dreading, since I was hit by at car at the age of 14, broke both legs, hip and pelvis, pelvis still broken in two place, and when the weather changes on me, I already feel the affects of that in my bones, but keeping my head up and moving forward. The stronger I am, hoping the faster and easier this will all go.

Wildflower, you can take over the counter Claritin (I take the generic form, Loratadine), 10 mg. Just take one the morning of your shot, and then one every day for 7 days if getting the Neulasta. I get Neupogen shots, which are daily, so I just take Claritin for the days I am taking the shots (Neupogen is short acting whereas Neulasta is long acting). I have had almost ZERO pain after my injections, whereas others have had some severe bone pain after the injections when they don't take the claritin. It works by decreasing the inflammation that occurs in the bones from the injection making the bones create white blood cells.
You do want to make sure it is cleared by your doc, just because of course we all need our onc's approval to take something even over the counter. You could take it with you to your injection appt today and if he approves it, take it, but wait maybe 20 minutes at least before getting the injection to make sure it is in your system.
Regarding the headaches and Zofran, I don't get headaches with it, but I know many women do. If you suspect that is the culprit, they can switch you to something else for nausea. Compazine, etc., etc. It's hard to know if the headache is Zofran related or related to the chemo or just stress, though.
Oh regarding Benadryl, perhaps that works as well like the Claritin. All I know is the clinical trial is being done with Claritin/Loratadine: LINK I printed this out and took it with me to my onc visit. He had not been aware of the trial/Claritin but was very open to me taking the Claritin.
I get the sleeping pills prescribed. They are like heaven to me. I resisted taking them the first round. This second round, I just do it, and I am SO much more rested and able to think more clearly! I take Restoril. There are many options, though. You can just ask your onc what they recommend.
-
Hi krazycat. We're on the same regime....ACx4, Taxol x4...started yesterday too....only difference is I'm 32 weeks pregnant.
So far so good since infusion yesterday...besides tiredness, mild headache last night (took painkillers), heartburn and major insomnia.
Woke up this morning with some shedding on my pillow. Husband is saying it might be from my haircut on Monday. But I dunno.
Hoping all of you have minimal SE.
Keep your chin up and your thoughts positive. -
Thanks dancetrancer,
I haven't taken the Zofran yet that they game for these 2 days, and kind of wondering if I should take the compazine that they presricbed me instead. Seems like my headache is subsiding, kind of nervous about taking the zofran if that could be it.
-
Can't say I blame you wildflower for being wary. I guess if it were me I'd probably try the other med, since you have it...but it's a tough call! You could always call your onc's nurse and see what they advise. Either way, definitely take something to prevent nausea before you have it. All the "old timers" from chemo that I've talked to plus my onc and onc nurse told me to take your nausea meds on schedule, even if you don't have symptoms. They say that once you start vomiting, it is harder to get it under control with the meds. Easier to prevent.
-
I definitely misunderstood about the nausea drugs. I thought I wouldn't have to take the pills for a few days since the IV stuff supposedly works for 3 days. Now I know to take one before I leave after chemo to get a head start.
Wildflower, if I understand it correctly dose dense simply means every two weeks instead of every three. -
Krazycat - ask you nurse what time to start them after chemo. Every onc is different in what they want you to do, which makes it all so confusing. The premeds do stay in your system for a while. I was told to start my Zofran around 9 or 10 p.m. the eve of chemo day. I get Aloxi AND Emend in my IV. Aloxi/Zofran are the same class of drug - 5-HT3 receptor antagonists. They work by blocking the action of serotonin, a natural substance that may cause nausea and vomiting. Emend is in a different class of drugs - substance P antagonists (SPA). It mediates its effect by blocking the neurokinin 1 (NK1) receptor. And yes the IV premeds do work for several days, but I was told to still take the Zofran on schedule b/c otherwise I might get breakthrough nausea symptoms, which are more difficult to control once they start.
The studies I have read have said that getting both Emend and Aloxi/Zofran in your IV on chemo day results in significantly better control of post-chemo nausea (of course combined with taking post chemo meds as prescribed).
-
Indigo- ask them if they can put the access in the day of your surgery. If treatment is the next day they can do it. I got it done. This way it was one less poke.
On to my TX#3. I know there are few here getting Tx tidy, good luck to everyone.
