New Format of BCO is a DISASTER
Comments

Just checked the weather.com website and due to customer feedback....meaning "complaints" they are working at giving us back our left to right 10 day forecast, rather than vertically.....They appreciate that readers like to receive their information in different formats....hmmmm.....I don't think so...Left to right was fine.......Why don't you folks do user studies BEFORE changing formats....
-
Don't like the change! Don't like it at all. Too hard to find things. Too confusing. Too much wasted space. Please put it back to the way it was.
-
These changes are not user friendly at all--maybe it is time to just fade away from BCO.
-
After all of the discussion about making the forum (particularly the stage IV forum) MORE PROMINENT... It is really buried. On the favorite topics, it's not even listed. On the active topics, it is buried at the end in nothing very vivid. The forum needs to be MORE PROMINENT.

I have had no issues with color either Athena. Part of the problem is not every one is using the same browser, platform or operationing system. It takes a while to flush out all the bugs that work on all of these.
BTW I'm on windows 7, desktop using latest version of Firefox.
-
i think it's fine.. a little tweaking is all it needs. It always appears in my browzer in super large print (Control, scrolly-ball down and it shrinks to the propers size..) I have it pretty much where it seems to be the same as before.
I painted a poster once for school that said - 'The only thing that never changes is change itself" - really bright neon colors. i though i was so cool. I think it was kind of an earlier 70s thing.
While we are 'changing' we could use some more smileys.. funny ones, particularly a blue blinking one that means eek. (it's just my favorite smiley)

I agree with Veggy (Hi Val)...This new format is terrible, so confusing and not user friendly at all...I also agree with gramamuses...a good way to get us to fade away from this board, just not worth the hassle and makes us feel as though we are not welcomed....Just awful, just so frustrating to find this change to a place I used to feel was a very important part of my healing and family, now I just feel like a stranger....
-
apple...have you tried replying on a mobile device yet????
-
This may be me too.

I would suggest that the Dev's adjust the WYSIWYG Editor font to 1em or even 1.2em so that people can more easily see what they are typing.
*** I would suggest anyone struggling with font sizing at present adjust it. Either ctrl+ for windows operating system users or typically under view check the zoom settings.
Side note re-accessibility and low vision issues http://webaim.org/articles/visual/lowvision this may help. I've set the link to open in a new window so you can stay on the page while checking those options out.
I would also see if with the fluid layout... There is a way to have a secondary layout that people can select in their user control panel to load the content prior to the menu. So Left content over the left menu column. Can the coloum width be adjusted? There is what... 30-33% width assigned? I would drop it back to a 25% width with a min-width value in place if truly required.
Reality is what was failed to meet accessibility standards completely. What is now in place allows for much more flexibility. Please allow the staff here to work with you, and comments will be taken with care and consideration I am sure.
I for one am glad to see the new code in the back end. I just think there are some things that require fine tuning for those who are partial to an alternate layout. The structure now is much more screen reader friendly.
At the time of this post the discussion board posts are backed by EFEFE5 a.k.a. Linen and the area to the left below the menu is a D7D7C9 Grey. The avatars seem to have the forced sizing corrected. So far the adjustments seem to be going well. Gosh I adore CSS styling. It has been a bautiful thing for the internet.

P.S. Re active topics... Bring the unread post values to the same line as the latest post. Drop the H2 size value a bit as the titles are excessively large. And drop the created by/latest post by lines in size value. As simple as correcting the base code for that page template. Maybe a class to show it at a smaller value in the base code? Just a thought.
-
oh and another suggestion. CHAT ROOM LINK... TOP RIGHT CORNER PLEASE! *chuckle* I know most go one way or another but having to pop to the main site to get to it is annoying.

Moderators, I hate this new format. I agree think this sucks for newbies, and for me as well. I was comfortable with the old format
Too Slow, too much scolling down!

I'm not having any problems with it... have all the bugs been worked out already?
-
I can adapt. But I do think it was easier to browse through the active topics with the old format(especially at work when I had a free moment).
-
I can't access any of the replies to my previous posts! This is not good as there is information on there that I need--
Help!

RThings were OK on my mobile.....I am wondering whether this format discriminates against older models...if so, that's serious - ir presents an accessibility issue.
I am not mon my home desktop, with no problems, but I recently upgraded.
I HATE, HATE, HATE the articles targeted at me - 51 of them, too! I may be in a tiny minority on this, but I think it's an invasion of my privacy when an automtic systems targets information at me based on what THEY THINK I am interested in.
Please get rid of the "archives" articles. The choices are DEAD WRONG. That kind of targeting is insulting, invasive, and a waste of time and space. Let me be an inteligent, curious human being and go in search of information as I see fit. It's why I avoid Facebook and have so many privacy settings here. I will do my own customnization, thank you very much.
Navigability not a problem for me on three devices now.
-
VR - I had no trouble replying on my android device....soory you are having difficulty.
Mods: How do we get rid of the articles and tell the system to stop presuming it knows what to send us???
-
Oh my , what happened??? It's nearly unusable now.
It was barely set up like a forum before, not it's impossible to find topics.
I sure hope this is a test and it will go back to normal.....
-
Another positive: I do love the fact that one can clearly see if there are new posts on one's favorite topics.
-
You've got to be kidding me!!!! What was wrong with the old format? Newbies are supposed to want to keep coming back? Wonder how many newbies will now not get the benefit of experiences from others who may only go to their "favorites" and never think to take a look at other forums or active topics. Maybe I'm just too old for change.
-
Athena.... I knew I should have gotten a droid!!! No! Wait!!! Well what do you know... I am back on my mobile replying and the font is finally okay! Amen!
-
Goodness gracious, I really hate this change:
1. one third of my computer screen is wasted gray space.....what was wrong with the information going across the top instead of the side?
2. everyone's aviators a really tiny
3. I don't think I will have the time to scroll through the active topics...too cumbersome.....
4. The 'All Topics' page is extremely confusing
5. I looked at the articles that are suppose to apply to 'me'; at the top of the list are: obesity (I'm not obese), smoking (don't smoke, never did), triple negative (not triple negative), metastatic cancer (not that I'm aware of), and drinking (O.K. I did have a glass of wine last weekend)........REALLY?!!!!
6. Remember that most people dealing with BC are middle age immigrants to the world of technology, SIMPLE is BETTER! It sure doesn't seem very easy to figure out or friendly to me....and if you explain stuff in 'computerease', I am lost.
-
FYI: I am not one that hates change. In fact, I have been hoping this board would put in vbulliten or some real forum software. I had no idea when the mods said changes THIS is what you meant.
Honestly, it's a mess. For people like me, who liked to read the entire board, it is impossible to find things. There are 68 topics to scroll through, so you have to use active topics! Fewer clicks, not more is what people need! That left side "dashboard" is very annoying. Why is it there? When you click into a forum, why doesn't it go away?
There doesn't seem to be a logical order to things when you look at the front to choose what to read you can't see much. Going to active topics brings up maybe four topics, not the entire list like it used to. I don't want to see an individual title and then all that stuff, the forum format was fine. You have to scroll way too much. Plus, it's slow as molasses.
I honestly don't know what the tech team was thinking and why top message boards weren't emulated.
I'm a very techy person and I just can't see a 65 year old woman without much experience who is newly diagnosed coming here and figuring it out.
I know pimping the articles is part of your goal of this board but you need a community to stick around so you can pimp them.
I hope I'm wrong and people find it more user-friendly than I do. It's just hidious. And again, I LOVE change.
-
Does anyone know how to make the font bigger for reading posts?
-
Ok: I just found what could potentially be a BIG flaw and cause much hurt:
When you use the "Active Topics" function, the name of the thread is in big, bright red - but the name of the forum is in link-sized light blue.
THIS MEANS MORE PEOPLE WILL BE POSTING ON STAGE IV FORUMS wiuthout knowing it, causing much, much upsetness there. People have been complainbing for years about this. In fact, I can see people posting on wrong forums all of the time. It's hard to see the forum name as well.
Mods, this as to be fixed ASAP. Both Thread and forum should be in big bold letters - if anything is bigger, it should be the name of the forum - NOT the thread.
Active Topics should be, for example:
Stage III (Big bold letters)
Name of thread
-
Athena...that's what I've been trying to say, but no where nearly as well as you have said it! The forum needs to be PROMINENT!!! PLEASE!!
-
We're continuing to gather your comments for the developers - thank you all!
-
One of the things I liked doing best because it saved a lot of time....is going on a particular member's profile and seeing what comment they have recently made...on any thread. Can't do that anymore! Now you can only see part of the first line in it and then click on it..find the topic...then try to guess what page their comment might be on and find it that way...not worth the effort.
-
I started a forum to complement my blog. It's here: http://butdoctorihatepink.proboards.com. If you would like to come and join us while BCO sorts itself out, you are welcome. It was never meant to be another BCO but I really think a lot of folks will leave over this change and I want to stay in touch with them.
Invite whoever you want, or ignore me.
Thanks!
-
Nancynow - No, I can't - that was one feature I was hoping for!
Mods, please tell us we can customize "ignore" to include threads and forums...I don't need some machine thinking it knows what articles I want to read - I need a system which lets ME make choices.
Poor Mods - we are really talking to day - hope you get some sleep!~
