This weekend will mark a milestone for me as it will be my first year returning to the AWBC (crewing this time) since my diagnosis.  Ironically enough I had either walked or crewed the previous 3 years before my dx, so how strange it all was to find out I was one of the "every 3 minutes."  I also based my decision on where to be treated in part because of the Avon Walk, as I am fortunate to have several very good cancer centers all within an hour of my home.  I ultimately decided on Johns Hopkins whom the Breast Center is named for the Avon Foundation.  AND I found all you incredible women right here at BCO!  So although I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy, it seems as though I was meant to do this.  I am also proud to say that my daughter Lauren (now 15) has been carrying the torch for the past 2 years and now her 3rd on the Youth Crew.  This will be our first Walk together.  I'm not sure how I'll fair physically or mentally (I tend to numb out feelings, until weird times, like movies, music, or sappy commercials), but I will be there!  And I'll be carrying you all with me in my heart.

One funny note about all the years doing this is that we (our crew) all check in to the beautiful posh event eve hotel, do our AW check in, have our meeting, go out to dinner then retire to an ultimately comfortable high end bed, only to lay there and clock watch.  Wish me luck, 4:00 am Saturday morning is going to come really early..............Oh and do the ANTI rain dance for us, sleeping in a tent on Saturday night!!!!

Love you all,

Sharon Smile

Sharon - I'll be thinking of you.  My sister, daughter and I did this together exactly one year before my diagnosis.  My sister works for Avon and has done 3-4 of these walks a year in many different locations.  She's done this for the past 8+ years.  Very strenuous two days, but incredibly emotional and rewarding.  I need to do it again too.  It will be with different feelings now though!  Who knew that we'd be part of the one in every 3 minutes!  Good luck and enjoy the experience with your daughter.  It's a cherished memory of mine.

p.s.  We also do the nice hotel so we can pamper ourselves a little!

Hope the walk is amazing.  I crewed the Denver Komen 3 day in 2009 and 2010.....want to crew the Colorado Avon 2 day the end of June, but I haven't figured out my summer yet so don't know if the date will work out....can't wait to hear all about your week-end...please post details...

Good luck and have fun. I have been part of a team for our local Relay for Life since it started 4 years ago. It is heavily supported by my school district. It was both difficult and emotionally freeing to walk the survivors lap this year. Walked it with my dd's fiancé 's grandmother (32yr bc survivor) and a fellow teacher ( 22yr bc survivor). Caryn
