When I was a teenager I used to volunteer at the Farmers' Museum

in Cooperstown NY. I carded wool, spun it and weaved it...fun ..

but they had all the equipment..

Artsee - the colors in that painting are sublime.. they would really match my decor.... and Lisa, the colors in those birds are just gorgeous.  You really have an eye.

I need to learn how to paint with oils.  I've produced watercolors, acrylics, drawings and pastels, but have only dabbled with oil paints.  I really can't take a class, and honestly i get really frustrated with the pace of public classes.

Any books that anyone would recommend?  You tube movies?  Edit i see there are 1000s of youtube tutorials.. cool.

Apple, so good to see your smiling face.  Hope you are doing well.  Friends of mine are now painting with water based oil paints, you don't need turpentine with them, fewer chemicals.  Good luck with your painting

SoCalLisa - think that's the male madarin duck with the purpley head - just magnificent creatures..I used to love to see them in London parks  at first thought it was a decoy, them it moved.

Apple, I agree with Sunflowers to try the water based oil paints. I never wanted to work with oil because of my problems with odors triggering headaches. I'm doing watercolor as a result and will probably stick with that.

Apple...the cactus paintings match my decor as well so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they don't sell at the exhibit they were juried into. I believe Sun, the one I posted was 'the dessert in bloom' and the other one is 'the dessert after the bloom'. I will post them after the exhibit. Can't show anyone now. Lisa...great photos...love those colors.

My three day workshop with 'Bridget Austin' was fabulous. I learn so much, as far as simplifying goes. I'm taking a week long retreat and paint with her in Door County in Oct.

artsee, too funny about not wanting to sell. When I had my store, I'd price my fabric wall art pieces really high. I figured if they'd spend that much they must want them! I got $1,000++ for some of the pieces!!

Hi You All! Although, previously, in a life before cancer, I was/am an artist and a writer (and a DANCER), I have found, for me, the way that creative inspiration is coming NOW is through food. I am learning how to really cook. Yumm. Healthy, beautiful, tasty food. Thai, French, Japanese...

My newest favorite: Tom Yum Soup! It is so beautiful, so simple to make, so many flavors in it. I add extra vegetables and extra shrimp and it is a delightful meal.

The basic recipe:  (PS and it is good for fighting cancer too!!!)

    http://thaifood.about.com/od/thairecipes/r/tomyumkung.htm

Edit: PS I skipped the garlic in my recipe, exchanged a bunch of lime zest for the kafir (lime) leaves (that I couldn't easily find) , and left out the coconut milk (that I can't stand) and also the sugar (that wasn't needed) and in mine I added a whole 10 ounce package of 18 divined, shelled raw shrimp and a whole bunch of broccoli, and other veges from my fridge and a nice bunch of cherry tomatoes. Yumm!

Oh gosh I'm getting so hungry reading these wonderful recipes. Having steak on the grill and have asparagus marinating in olive oil and fresh garlic which will be roasted.

Barb...how funny. I too had my own business. I owned my own beauty salon for many years. After that I sold it and worked for a dept. store salon for ten years. I retired when I could get employee discount for life. That is HUGE. Sometimes it seems they pay me to buy.:)

Lisa..I'm going to paint that gorgeous Mandarin duck!!!!!! Will post when I'm done.

We have so much beauty in this nation we can't even imagine. The green is not scum but vegetation reflections from shore or the edge of the pond, as the water moves and ripples.

    Thanks for sharing Lisa.

I used that photo app on this picture of my pet skunk, he looks like an oil painting.

It is said that healthy people are creative.  That creativity is energy overflowing.

I distinctly remember when I had no more creativity, memory or emotions to develop anything.  I want to be creative again.  Been digging through all my offfice stuff to get down to what is needed and throw out what is not, then will be working and writing again.  I do very little except my writing, medium of choice.  But will post short stories here, or the links to them.  I also paint on mirrors and windows, and use an application to place fine art prints onto the windows and mirrors.  Enjoy that too.  And decorating my home.

I keep watch on this thread all the time, want so much to be back to the old me.  My happiest times were sitting at computer laughing my butt off as I wrote.  Especially in early morning or late evening.
