Diep 2012

Hello everyone! Day 4 and down to one drain so might get to go home sooner than anticipated! Standing and walking around - the back is so achy- worse than the stitched side- so keep on walking! I have a twin room and the other occupant is a moaner so really need to get home to rest ! Still getting my mind around the frankenboob thing! Lucky I took before photos and it is much better. I had enough for C cups both sides , the right cancer side has a big flap the other had an expander do less skin needed. Not symmetrical scars then and I have stretch marks on my boobs- never a big fan of those when they were on my stomach . But the infection and skin losses left no other options. Lost my appendix scar- it is like I have to get used to a whole new body! Love reading others stories here too!
Take care (( Robyn)) -
Robyn - I'm almost 5 months post DIEP and I'm STILL getting used to my new body, eventually I assume I'll be used to it, but not yet. The scars will fade and hopefully things will look more symmetrical. The big thing that I noticed was that the skin tone of my belly was different from my breast so I now have one 2 tone breast. Luckily I'm not planning to show them off to anyone.
-
I had one immediate and one delayed DIEP. The immediate was skin sparing prophylactic mx but the immediate used the ab skin. My scars are fading pretty well, but I do have two toned skin somewhat. What I think is hysterical is the peach fuzz on the delayed side with the larger flap. But ditto on the limited audience for seeing them. I figure the door has closed on any potential future career as a naked model.
-
Betsy, the divot was crazy! I was alarmed the first time, but the radiologist was right that it wouldn't take long to fill out (within the hour). I took photos, of course. One of these days I'll post my photos on timtam's site.
-
Did anyone use a Marsupial Pouch for your drains? I just got my DIEP pre- and post- op instruction package, and there is mention of this specific holder for drains. It looks like it's made of bulky terrycloth and is worn around the waist. Once I get home from the hospital, I'll use the zippered cotton hoodies that I bought to hold the drains after my BMX - they have inside pockets and worked perfectly. And I have a lanyard with two pockets that I can use for showering. Will I need anything else?
-
Paula.. I still have my divot.. odd...
LuvRVing.. My PS gave me the pouch.. I preferred using a bag swung over my shoulder, and I had drains for 8.5 weeks...
-
Betsy, don't the drains go on the inside of your clothes? I like the over the shoulder idea, but how does that work?
-
Cascader... the drain line are long.. so they come out of your body, are under your clothes, but are long enough that you can put the bulbs in a little over the shoulder bag so that the bag hangs at the hip... I would wear a blousey shirt so that it kind of bloused over the bag a little... Does that make sense?? My favorite shirts were these blouson tops (with a little elastic on the bottom so that it kind of swagged over) .It hid the drain lines well, and the bag was on the OUTSIDE of the clothes... When you wear the kangaroo pouch, it adds a lot of bulk at your abdomen...If you wear the pouch under your clothes, it makes you look enormous... and if you wear it on the outside, it looks like a medical pouch (not very attractive). I would sleep with the pouch, but wore the bag during the day.. It was the q-ball bag (from the pain meds)
-
When I had my BMX, I was actually able to put the drains in my jeans pocket when I went out, and then any top worked as most of them are long on me anyways. But I guess I won't be wearing jeans for a while after surgery!
Betsy - I thought that the kangaroo pouch looked bulky, too. I don't think I'm going to buy it.
-
I used the Kangaroo pouch. I liked it. I also used the Jacki. I wasn't going anywhere with my drains so it didn't matter if it was bulky. I had the drains for 2 weeks. I didn't really feel like going out anyway, I was still really tired and sore and I couldn't walk straight. I was wearing my jeans at week 3, it was great getting out of those clothes.
Actually mine was called Marsupial.
-
Jeans at 3 weeks?? Wow.
-
After the DIEP, I had only one drain come home with me and it was gone in 2 days. I just clipped the bulb to the back of my waistband and wore a long-enough loose top for those two days when I went out.
Half the crapola I bought was unnecessary. Most of what I needed, I already had. I used a conference lanyard to hold the bulbs when I showered and just cardigans and button front pyjamas for tops. I wore yoga pants and similar for bottoms.
-
Betsy, my breast is a bit misshapen. The seroma was at the surface and almost the size of my hand. So while there's not a divot, things aren't settling down because of the resulting firmness. I seem to have some breast lymphedema as well. I'm curious to see if there are changes over the next 3-4 months. I won't know how it will be dealt with until I go down again. I'm lopsided in my stretchy bras, but I found a wonderful wireless molded bra at Soma Intimates that evens me out.
I used the kangaroo pouches my Dr gave me. I had hip drains for maybe 3 weeks. If I had them in longer I may have wanted a more attractive solution. I had trouble keeping the onQ ball bag on my shoulder. Plus those first 3 weeks I wasn't going out and was still on pain meds. I didn't care if my little pouch peeked out from under my shirt on my walks, dr visits or with visitors. I was all about comfort. I also felt like the bulbs were cleaner staying in the pouch. -
I didn't buy anything but button front pjs. I wore yoga pants and wife beater t shirts that I pinned the drains to. Than a cardigan or flannel shirt over that. I liked the t shirt. Rcause I could pin the drains anywhere on it and I didn't need to fuss with them at all. If they leaked I didn't care cause I would just ditch them when I was done. Work great for me.
-
Paula.. the Q Ball bag I would sling over my head, so left shoulder, right hip across my chest. Since I had lots of drains and it lasted 8.5 weeks I had to be comfortable and have it work... For me, this was the best solution.
The only thing I bought were yoga lounge pants and shorts... super comfy.
-
Omg, I just realized I dont remember WHAT I did with my drains ! Here I am asking these questions, but I remember I had them for my UMX and I THINK? for my first unsucessful recon but have no idea what I did with them! Don't remember, what is up with that? Can I still blame it on chemo brain? lol.
-
You can always blame it on chemo brain!
-
Blame it on the narcotics! 2 weeks after my surery I asked my husband. Did you come and visit me in the hospital? All day, with the baby? Did I eat? Meanwhile I was texting, etc. I don't remember anything. I think it's what makes it bearable.
-
I had a scrub top with patch pockets in the front on each side for the drains. I looked for one that snapped down the front. I couldn't find one, so I bought a cotton scrub at Wal-Mart and DH cut it down the front, hemmed the edges and put snaps on it. (Yes, he is a pretty dang perfect DH ... He emptied all the drains every day too!) I had 6 drains (3 on each side) and kept them in the pockets. I used the On-Que pouch to hold the drains in the shower. When I went out, I just wore an extra-huge shirt over the scrub top. We lent the scrub to the wife of a colleague of DH who had a bi-mast.... And then she lent it to a friend of hers who also had a bi-mast. The traveling scrub did eventually make it back home.

I was just diagnosed with a BC recurrence after 9 years. Most likely will have to have a UMX. After reading your posts I am thinking about DIEP. I am a bit on the thin side. Is it still possible to have DIEP? Does anyone know of a good PS who does this in the LA/Santa Monica area? Also, how long does it take to recover from this procedure?
-
Janelle - Try docs at UCLA, my PS (Charles Tseng) was great, and others I've heard are also great (Festjekian - I think I mispelled that - was the assistant on my DIEP). Feel free to PM if you want more info.
I was in the hospital Thursday (surgery day) through Monday. Went home Monday afternoon. Could probably have pushed for Sunday, but didn't want to push it. I was off work for 6 weeks and for me that was probably just about right. I could have gone back earlier but would have been uncomfortable, any more time off wasn't necessary though.
I'm having follow up surgeries too - DIEP was in Dec., 1st follow up April, next follow up surgery in July. The timing was my choice as I'm a teacher and wanted them during breaks.
As for being too thin, I was definitely not, so can't speak from personal experience, but others have said that they can get more than you might think. They can also take from areas other than the belly (hips, butt, and back). Good luck.

Hello everyone! I got out of hospital today on Day 6, taking just paracetamol/codeine for regular pain relief. It was strange putting on a bra and having weight there- I am a c cup now, but had enjoyed the weightless no boob feeling. Still I can lose weight and there is some swelling to go down. No drains though so just concentrating on healing and following doctors orders to rest- no prob I feel exhausted!!
So glad to be home recovering in my space - my kitty has been extra attentive and designated himself as my recovery doona mate! Pets give such great therapy when healing- Romeo is a blue tabby point kitten and am picking up his mate -a red point Siamese kit on Tuesday.
Welcome Janelle! If you are thin there are other options if you are thin or low on body fat- after my years journey, with benefit of hindsight,I would have preferred to have immediate reconstruction and getting a good PS is the first step to guide and advise you appropriately. My DIEP was delayed as I have planned to have TEs then implants- my plans were screwed by a infection after rads losing the TE , rads left everything a mess! I hope your journey is easier!! Cheers Robyn -
Thanks Robyn. I think I will have immediate reconstruction. I am looking at PSs now. I have gotten some good recommendations.
Good luck on your recovery!
-
Good morning! I have a quick question about recovery/time off. When you say you were off work 6 weeks or 5 weeks or 10 weeks...whatever the case may be, are you including the time from surgery or after being released from the hospital? Just curious as I'm hoping not to have take any more time off than 6 weeks total. I will, of course, if I need more time. Just a little more than a month out....I'm excited, scared, impatient....a whole number of emotions!
-
I had surgery on a Thursday, I was back on a Monday so six weeks from the Monday after surgery. I could probably have gone back those two work days earlier, but Monday was cleaner.
-
My Stage 2 is tomorrow morning. I have done absolutely nothing to prepare for this surgery. It's scheduled to last 90 minutes with general anesthesia, then recovery, then home. My PS told me I would be back to my normal routine by the next day. I'm only having fat grafting to fill in a few divots, fix two dog ears and make the right breast equal in size to the left. They are close but the right is a little smaller. And fix one small area that had some trouble healing on the right breast.
So, am I really going to be back to my regular routine by the next day? I sure hope so, but now I'm getting a little worried.
-
Mary... For me, no way.. I spent 2 nights in the hospitla, but I had a lot more done... It kind of depends how much lipo you have to harvest the fat.
Julianna... I would say that it is TOTAL time off... I am not the best one to ask as I had a complication that required more surgery (DIEP one month after BMX and Hip flaps), but I was back at work one month after my second surgery.. so one month post DIEP.
-
Thanks Betsy. I'm really not having much done. I hope he's right. At this point, all I can do is roll with the flow anyway. Too late to worry about it now!
-
Mary - I had 2 dog ears removed and a little bit of lipo/reduction to the DIEP breast for Stage II and I was pretty OK the next day - no pain meds or anything needed (then again, I haven't taken any pain meds for anything after leaving the hospital). Hopefully you'll have a similar experience.
-
Thanks Cookie!! I hope it's the same for me. I don't know why I'm nervous about this surgery. If I made it through the 9-1/2 hour Stage 1, this should be a piece of cake.
