Too early for April 2012 mastectomy?

Well ladies I made it to the other side! Just a little sore but still on morphine. Staying an extra night in the hospital because of my pain and the PS really filled my TEs. Hope everyone is well.
-
Congrats Markat! So happy that this is now behind you. Now just heal.
-
I'm going to try the sports bra route. I'm hopeful!
-
UMX Ladies- I just got back from a shopping trip to Marshall's. There are some sports bras out that have removable inserts in the women's sports dept. ($12.99 each!) Yep, I'm going to put one of my fiber fake boobs in the UMX side and not worry about possible slippage. I also have camis with built in bras which I double stick taped the fake boob inside of the UMX side. That worked okay. Not ready to drop a lot of money for official masectomy bras just yet. Good luck!!!! HUGS to all you gals!!!!
-
My insurance covers 3 mastectomy bras and a silicone breast form. You should check to see if yours will.
-
Hey, thanks for reminding me about my insurance.... (chemo brain moment). It does cover them but haven't had the time to go to the specialty shop to get fitted just yet.
-
Valerie-did I forget to put you on our list? I am so sorry, I don't see your name. What was your surg date so I can add you now, to make the document officially correct.
Welcome back Columbiana and Markat!
I will go back to work at 4 weeks too. Hope some brain power kicks in by then.
-
Welcome back Markat and Candy, YEA!!! I am on my way home from BS appointment. All went well. Interesting twist to pathology is that I had "columnar cell changes with atypia" in my " healthy breast. So, glad it's gone, too. Boob voyage to both of those old' gals! Still have my drains in...maybe out monday if I stop flowing. Question....what did your docs tell u about deodorant? I wish I could use some natural stiff tomde - stink me!!! Xxoo to all.
-
That was natural stuff to unstink me..damn iPad!!
-
I went back to school today - three weeks post op. It was good to see all my classmates but I only lasted about 3 hours (usually an 8 hour day) so I left early. Fell asleep as soon as I got home. I'm not sure if I am just used to being able to take naps or if my body is still so exhausted, but I am going to listen to my body and ease my way back in. I had quite a bit of anxiety about going back because I was worried people would look at my "flatness", or bump into me. I warned them ahead of time to please not hug me so I got lots of kisses on the cheek. It was difficult to sit up in a regular chair when I have been glued to my recliner for the last 3 weeks.
Longislandmom - glad to hear all went well with your pathology! I started wearing deodorant under one arm about 3 days after the drain was out. The other one still has too many blisters so it has to stay stinky. My girlfriend said she can't smell anything but man, it was stanky to me! Shaving is still a delicate operation.
-
I was told deod ok, shaving no. Alcohol wipes (like baby wipes but saturated with alcohol) helped with the BO until I got the ok--no bacteria=no smell
-
10 days post surgery. Doing well physically. Mentally it's been a tough day. Frankenboobs and deep numbness with a little claustrophobia stirred in. Not a great mental cocktail. Sending love and prayers to the others who had this done recently. We are all pretty damn tough!
-
Plymouth, thanks for the baby wipe tip...I will ask PS tomorrow...sounds great! Doula..sorry u r feeling down! Everyone is entitled to her share of sadness. As for the claustrophobia, I am right there with u. TEs do it to me. Peace and hugs.

MELROSEMELROSE I don't know if you have a Nordstrom in your area, but they carry mastectomy bras camis etc , do fittings and accept insurance (I'm not sure if you need a script so might be good idea to call lingerie dept before you go). Sometimes its tough to find those specialty shops but 2 of our malls have Nordstroms.
-
Hey Plymouth ,
Is your drains still in your arm? I just shaved the other day, I had no drains,
I'm like kinda scared of using deod, I'll pass on that because of that's where 20 nodes where removed.
When I had my lovely drains all six of them my docs told me to shower everyday, and something's I would shower twice aday, never had smelly arm pits lol, thank goodness,
I'm out like a little past three weeks post surgery, and my PS said I can drive, even when I was two weeks, he told me it's how I feel while driving, well I drove today it wasn't too bad, I had pressure in my breast,
So I'm back in the drivers seat!! I don't feel a lot better now that all of the drains is out,
I had a BX/ Deipflap on April 11, I was wondering how long until I can wear jeans?
My tummy is numb like my breast, I had to try a pair on today, the site where the drain was is sore,
I had ask my OS about my numb, he told me that's from the surgery, but what I didn't ask him, will the numbness goes away?
When my PS was removing the drain, I did make him laugh, and like he don't laugh, he is a 45 or48 year old German dr, blond hair, my DS was with me today, and when he seen the dr, he that's your dr, he looks like 20!! lol, I said to my ps, umm your removing the drain, if you do or don't, I'll be missing him, because, I feel like he a part of me now lol.... So glad to be rid of that drain!! -
Floridamomandwife-Thanks for telling me about Nordstroms. There are two post op masectomy specialty shops near my house and Nordstroms is also close by. I shopped at one of the specialty shops prior to my UMX. I already have a script for the masectomy bras/etc from my breast surgeon and know that my insurance will cover. I'm a fairly active person and always looking for practical solutions for everyday run around bras that don't cost a fortune. I'm fortunate that righty is healthy and a B/C cup so I can still go out without a bra if I want to.

Hi all
Doulamom I've noticed that your cancer was just about the same as mine.
DCIS, 5cm, grade 1, ER+, PR+. I also had 3mm invasive in the middle of the tumour.
Where you live says WA, I live in Western Australia, what does yours mean?
-
Sony
Sorry you have had a hard time, been looking for you! Hope you are resting and everything is ok! Sending all my best
Cindy -
Plymouthpeople, My surgery date was April 19.....I think you had your surgery the day before so I'm not surprised I didn't make the list, lol. I had right side mastectomy and left side lumpectomy. Turns out I'm one of those lucky people that had two cancers....one in each breast. My left side was supposed to be atypical cells and it turned out to be DCIS grade3. I get to go back for re-excision on May 11 because although the margin was clear.....it wasn't big enough.
My prayers go out to those still having a hard time after surgery. I'm doing much better today and I'm down to one drain with the other to come out on Monday. Sure will be glad to get rid of it!

Markat great to see u ont the other side
I am seriously thinking of having my TE's out .. I cannot take it . I must be the worst baby for pain . my mom left me today , in the last 2 days I have showerd and dressed myself and tried to cook and do dishes and drive today as she had to go to airpoty .. I am crying a lot ...this shit feels tight and sore and all kinds iof numb amd im so friggin emotional .. and now Alone .. thanks for listening ladies sorry I am such a pain in the asssssss

Hi, since some of you mentioned the delay in being able to wear deodorant, that bothered me too. At the time I showered and used alcohol wipes until I could use the real thing again, but FYI, I just heard on TV this a.m. that wiping with apple cider vinegar works too. I personally am not sure about trying that - I mean, is smelling like vinegar really worse than BO - but I'm tempted to give it a whirl and see what happens. I sure wouldn't get either the vinegar or alcohol too close to any healing incisions, though!
My goodness, lisamarie - I think you are doing quite a lot, considering. As for the tight feeling - although I am well healed at 6 weeks post op, I still get that very frequently. I asked my surgeon about it at 2 weeks, thinking maybe he could prescribe muscle relaxers (I had no recon or TEs, btw), and he said he didn't think it was the muscles, but more skin, and should get better with time. Well, while I can't say it isn't any better - it definitely *is* muscle contractions. I have found that some gentle self massage using one technique I found online for lymph drainage massage really helps the muscles calm down and relax.
They would still prescribe a muscle relaxer, I think - but now that I'm on chemo there are days when I feel like a walking pharmacy - so I decided not to ask again.
Don't worry about complaining - we've all been through it, and that's partly what we're all here for!! Hugs and purple healing wishes to you. It does get better.
-
Ok Valerie, you are official.. On the list and everything! Sorry I missed you earlier.
Lisamarie, maybe you can get muscle relaxants, they help me.
Reminds me of Braxton-Hicks contractions you get when 9 mo pregnant, before labor starts.
-
Lisamarie- I have been taking Xanax at night and it makes a huge difference. I am 3 and a half weeks out and it is much better. Each day gets better. You should give yourself 3-4 weeks before making the decision to have them removed. Also you can have a visiting nurse come in being how you are alone. Just ask you surgeon and they usually set it up for you. I hope today is better than yesterday.
My MO called and my file has been faxed to a doc in Boston to review and I should have an appt. next week. I am more afraid of chemo than loosing my breasts.
-
LisaMarie, I have an expander and get that tight feeling too. I've been doing a bit of gentle self massage like suggested and taking a couple extra strength tylenol when it gets too much and I can't take it anymore and that seems to help. You are doing a lot of movement is sounds like and this aggravates things. We have to let our bodies heal a bit. I know last weekend, I decided I could get outside and work a bit and I suffered for two days with rib cage pain and tightness/swelling in my upper chest area. I knew I overdid and just lounged around for the next few days. Our bodies have gone through a lot! You are a week after my surgery so I can assure you that you will start to feel better but you got to take it easy on yourself! Take care of yourself and know we are here sending hugs your way! Today except for the remaining drain site, I'm not in any pain at all.
-
Does anyone's incisions look black ? I know I need to heal valerie thanks , I must look up some massage maybe that will help me as well... I keep crying like a damm fool .. today I did a small amount of dishes, cleaned my bathroom a little bt, made me beanie weanies for dinner .. finally ate a little and some strawberries for dessert .. I feel tight as can be right now . I think I will take a pain pill .. and zofran for nausea as well .. oh jeeze .. I need to call PS monday morning .. i think now that my antibiotics are done I need something for yeast.. I tell ya the shit never stops at least for me . I am gonna try tylenol tomorrow .. do u think advil would be better as it is an anti inflammitory as well .. I dont know I just ramble on like crazy so sorry .. anyway I hope all u other ladies are doing great .. Big Warm May Hugs .. xoxoxo
-
hi, lisamarie- sorry you are still having such a tough time. first-- do not take advil-- only tylenol. advil and other products like it slow healing and can increase bleeding. in terms of incisions-- my stitches are blackish-- but not the skin. if your skin is black, definitely talk to your doctor about it. i have some small areas of dark purple, which i'm told is some skin necrosis. doc says they will peel off at some point in the future. in terms of tightness, i am right there with you gal. my chest is quite tight from TE, and my skin aches-- but i mostly try to ignore it. maybe your doc can prescribe a bit of valium to help if the tightness is unbearable for you. also, ask him to check your TE placement-- i saw a girl on another board that was in pain because the TE was in wrong place and pushing against her rib. she had it corrected and is much better now. SO sorry. i hope you feel better real soon!
I'm still draining. going to be a two weeker plus on drains. hopefully getting mine out on wednesday when i go to PS. dreading my first fill.
-
lisamarie68: I tried to shave under my arm. It is totally numb, I can see why it would be better to use an electric razor!!!
What should your boobs look like after skin-sparing mastectomy with expanders placed? Mine are completely depressing. They look squashed, flat, lopsided, like they belong to someone else? Am I being too picky? Will the implants look better?
-
Nightnurse , I am shaving numb and all with no cuts .. my mastectomy looks ugly and my left is bigger than right and they are very hard as I have TE's that are in . the TE's totally hurt me they feel like an elephant siting on me all day and night besides somehting else squeezing me constatntly .. I cry every day multiple times a day still deciding ti have TE's removed and have no boobs ..
Today is my first day off all pain meds . I had Tylenol 2 times so far today , I just want the nausea and constipation gone and I wanna feel more like me ..anyway I hope things are betterfor u
-
Hubby shaved for me. He is an angel! Nothing more humbling than having your man shower and shave you, plus wash your hair. He even washed the sheets and made up the bed like a hotel.
Today was my first day off pain killers, too. I did pretty well all day, although I think I will pop one at bedtime.
Had my scans this week and should get results soon. Actually, the doctor never told me when I'd get results, but I will call tomorrow and ask. Did anyone have scans? I had chest, abdomen, bone and they even did my head. Scary.
-
Nightnurse- when I first dared to take a look after surgery all I could think of was that my chest looked like my mothers lumpy mashed potato's growing up. They are lumping and out of shape because they had to fit the expanders in there while deflated. Sort of like a rubber raft that you deflate and fold up after summer. It will be 4 weeks for me on Wednesday and to be honest during the day I don't harldy notice them. If I roll over wrong in the night it will pull and burn, but I just chang positions.
Lisamarie- sounds like you got a yeast infection from the antibiotics. I usually do, but started taking a pro-biotic a week before surgery and didn't get one. I feel for you.
vballmom- they made me have all of the scans before the bmx. I was terrified they were going to find something else. By the time I got to the PET scan I had to take 2 Xanax. I had full body. It's because you have a positive node. I had 4 with the lx and they wouldn't do the bmx if I didn't have all the scans. It's all very tiring and wears on you mentally.
I worked 8 hrs yesterday and 9 hrs today. I am feeling it now. I get my first fill tomorrow. Only on one side because the RO says if they do the other side it will be in his way for rads. I guess I better get used to the expanders. They are going to be a part of me for awhile.
