Longislandmom I had drains for 3 weeks.  Be cautious about tape burns cuz mine didn't really show up until week two and now even after drains are gone I am battling blisters.

So glad to hear everyone is on the other side.  This ride just keeps changing directions and I'm glad you are all on it with me.

    (((hugs))) and prayers to all!

Hi Colombiana! Glad to hear from you. Yes, the drains aren't fun- I hated mine! Praying you recover well at home and that you don't have to wait very long for the drains to come out. Mantente fuerte!

Columbiana - so glad you checked in!

Day 6 and I have just one drain.  I am still at 40-45 ml.  Seeing BS tomorrow and am guessing it will stay in.  It is irritating.  The rest of the area is beginning to feel like a huge scrape - you know, road rash like when you fall off a bicycle and scrape a huge area?

I went to the banquet tonight and wore regular clothes. Pinned the drain to my bra - I actually wore a regular bra and stuffed it. I am exhausted now, but I held up okay.  Lisamarie, I think she is amazing but I am biased.

Nancy, are you on painkillers?  Can the itching be a reaction to the drugs?   I itched like crazy after the second surgery.

longislandmom. I'm coughing too, they say it's from the aneshtashia did they give you one of those plastic things to breath into to reach different levels.  they said I needed to do that every hour and my breaths were really short. I've watched it increase over the last week. No so sure it has anything to do with fluid outtake. my breast drains came out monday but still have 2 in stomach which are putting out 30 in one and not much in the other.  Having the second procedure, 3 hour surgery, thursday to finalize the flap, tighten every up and hoping the drains come out too.  Going to the BS today just a check up conversation.  the back of my upper arms are killing me, very numb and tinglly if that makes sense to touch or morvement. really uncomfortable. If there is one thing that is bothering me most at this point it is that. anyone else have this?

longislandmom, I was getting about that volume on day 9 between the 2.  They pulled one of my drains on Monday (day 10) which was only putting out about 15 ml a day.  Yesterday (day 11) my breast felt very hard and tight and I massaged a bit which seemed to lessen the tightness.  I think there was some fluid retention.  I pulled 30 ml out last night of the one remaining drain and it feels better today..

Best wishes to Markat today. In your pocket.

Lisamarie- I am 3 weeks out from surgery today and feel great. You will too. Each day does get better. The tingling is a good thing. Those nerves are doing their job and trying to reconnect. The numbness gets better too. As far as shaving goes I went to target and bought an electric razor that has different size attachments. I use the smallest one because I have some cording issues under the armpit that she took the nodes. Some parts under my arm are still numb and some aren't so it is tricky shaving. The TE's are taking me awhile to get used to. If I move just right the one on the left will burn and I can feel that one move sometimes. It just feels really weird.

I feel for all of you who have had the tubes for so long. I was really lucky that all 3 of mine came out after 6 days. I do have some scar tissue on the left side where the drain came out that still burns, but I keep rubbing it and it is getting better.

Hi ladies -that arm pain is nerve pain. I had it too; it's from the node dissection. I got discouraged about it the first couple of weeks after my surgery because anything that was not super soft against it hurt. My surgeon assured me at my 2-week postop visit that it would get better with time. Six weeks out and I'm happy to tell you that it is MUCH better. I don't get that awful burning pain any more. There is still numbness and a sore feeling, like a bruise, but it doesn't bother me much at all, and I can tell it's still getting better. So hang in there!

Hugs and purple energy to you as you continue healing.

my incision doesnt hurt at all.  but, the top area of my chest is still sore.  Actually, concave a bit.  BS told me reconstruction would solve that but im having delayed DIEP which wont happen until February 2013.  Its pretty noticeable and bumming me out!  I have a couple of weddings coming up and finding a dress that covers up everything is going to be a challenge.  F'ing BC!

    Hi All,

Keonghi--- I am dealing with a reaction to adhesive that showed up post op week 3, and have small raised rashy areas where they had bandaids, tape and even EKG patches on me! The rest of the skin on my body is very dry---I feel like a lizard shedding its skin. ITch! ITch!.Eucerin Skin Calming Cream is helping the most on those areas!

Yes, I got to keep my nipples. I am still worried about the left nipple living---it will be weeks before I know if it will survive. The right one looks totally normal, but I did not bruise so bad on that side. It will still be weeks before I can get a fill. UGH!

I stopped all pain pills and Flexeril last week as it was making me constipated, slowed me downand made me goofy. It just made me not care about having pain, but did not do much to relieve it. Ironically, walking stops muscle spasms for me. At first, I am slow, but once I get going and pick up some speed, the endorphins kick in. Spasms go away temporarily!

I continue to keep everyone in my prayers!

I find the same thing with the walking, tight at first, then looser and feel better.

Bummed about how painful post fills are.  Already tired of these TEs and started to feel sorry for myself.  So I googled TEs to see if I could find info on making the experience better.  Well, sometimes the universe just has to show you where your place is and what you have to be grateful for.  I came upon this site, Children of Fire, about pediatric burn victims, many of whom also need TEs (which is why it came up on search) and wow, that opened my eyes to the minuscule nature of my distress and the vastness of suffering in the world.   Now I feel guilty about being so lucky.

    Weird how malleable feelings are.

Besos a ti, Candy! You could try Immodium but I would first check with your doctors. Diarrhea is often caused by antibiotics - were you given antibiotics after your surgery?

Well, that explains the diarrhea, most likely. I have the same advice for you then - to check with your doc and maybe try immodium. And make sure you stay hydrated, msybe drink gatorade or pedialyte.

    Hi all

When is everyone going to go back to work? I'm having next week off then back the next week, that's 4 weeks off all up. I work in a supermarket and normally do some heavy lifting of stock, I will probably do something a bit lighter. I went out yesterday and today for a few hours and felt pretty tired after, I don't know how I will go working 8 hour days.

I need to start going for a few more walks but I think it's meant to rain the next few days!!!

Keonghi & Ndroby- I see that both of you have joined the " I'm allergic to what?" club with me.  While I was in the hospital recovering from the UMX, it became really clear to me that I had a tape problem.  I knew that before I had the surgery and told everyone--- paper tape only (supposed to have less skin reactions).  Whatever tape they used, I still had reaction.  It also turns out that I was also having a reaction to the iodine surgical scrub since I was having the hives on parts of my skin with no tape.   The adhesive was just holding in the scrub residue to my skin--- not good.   I was able to pull up the tape wherever I could and cleaned those areas with some baby cleansing wipes to get that scrub residue off of my skin.  I took Benedryl to keep the hives and itching under control.  Yes, I am now more allergic to things that I wasn't before all of this started.  Make sure you make a list of things ( tape, drugs, foods etc) you are allergic to and give it to your doctors throughout your treatment.  I carry a list with me whenever I go to my appointments/tests, so I don't have to try to remember what's on that list.  Since I know I am allergic to the iodine scrub,  I will not allow any kind of tests on me using iodine based contrast dye.  Hope both of you get those blisters under control and feel better.  HUGS!!!!

OK today is exactly two weeks since my surgery and overall I'm starting to feel much better.  I do get tired easily and I'm still taking lots of naps during the day but the only pain I'm having is around the drain exit and the top of my chest on the expander side.  The drain is supposed to come out on Monday.  I'm scheduled to get my re-excision and catheter placement for MammoSite rads on Friday May 11.  Is it realistic to think I could get back to work by May 14 or 15?  The surgeon said that the re-excision is an outpatient and most people do not require additional time off work if they schedule on a friday.

Aussie12- I went back to work part time 2 weeks post-op. The first day I did about 7 hours or so and was really tired. I am not working 2 days in a row yet as my job is quite physical. I am now working 3 days and have the option of working more if I want to. It has helped me mentally and physically. It has really helped with my range of motion with my arms. It will be so nice to have a pay ck this week even though it will be small. I would love so much to get outside and do things but all it does here is rain and it's cold and raw. I can't wait until we are out of this crappy weather pattern. I am tired of paying for heat as well.

Looking forward to my first fill on the 7th. These dam TE's will really make me appreciate my squishy girls when I get them. I can feel the fluid move on the left side when I move. It doesn't hurt just feels gross.

Good luck to Bellamarie tomorrow- thoughts and prayers are with you.

I am blown away by how many women are already on the May mastectomy board. And it's only May 2! This is such an epidemic. Not sure other people get that! This afternoon is my first post op appt with BS. I'm looking forward to getting the full path report...other than DCIS, I don't know anything else re: the cancer ( I.e. hormone receptor etc...). I'm thinking I am stuck w drains through weekend....which would make me at least a two weeker.

I want a shower! My armpits r so ripe!! Even with sponge bath they smell! Ugh!

    Longislandmom

I saw the post and make sad to see so many women going through this.

I just took a shower my armpits smell awful. The dr told me that was ok . At the hospital they gave stretchy Underwear that I cut and ur around my tummy to hold the drains. Make feel better but my hair is to curly and is a nest is driving me crazy. I should complain about little stuff like this but it makes me feel normal. I don't want the cancer to turn me in somebody also. I want to be positive.

My mom is making me eat liver!!!!!! I am midley anemic and I have a severe iron deficiency. My nauseas are terrible. Pain is better I only taking tylenol. The oxycotyn made me sick.

Does any one is going to change their diet? To help prevent recurrence? Any ideas?

    Love

    Hi everyone,

Candy, there is nothing that would make me eat liver, ever.  I got sick from the hydrocodone, but now I am take oxycodone and am ok. I keep trying to wean myself off but I still have pain.

I took a shower yesterday by covering my bandage with saran wrap. It's such a pain. Today I haven't really even gotten out of bed. Not a step in the right direction. I was planning on going to work today, but I am low on energy and motivation.

Longislandmom, let us know how your appointment goes.

Dianarose - I will be happy when you get your squishy things. I'm not even at the point where we can talk about recontruction yet...it is a long way away.  Docs want me healed and into chemo asap.

Gabs - six drains!  I only have the one, so it's not so bad.

Valerie, my re-excision was the worst of the three surgeries for me but it was not outpatient. Maybe yours is a simpler one than mine?  None of my margins were clean - sounds like your doctors have a plan.

Aussie, I was hoping to ease back to work today but I didn't.  I am on day 8. Maybe Monday?

I wish you all a day of happy thoughts and less pain!

I did pretty much nothing for two weeks and began working from home this week. Will work from home next week too. Back to the office full time on 5/14 - exactly one month since my surgery. I had a UMX so my only concern is can I stand wearing a silicone breast form by 5/14? I can't be lopsided! But the thought of putting pressure on the incision gives me the shakes.

Mardibra, I went out last night and wore a soft sports bra and inserted some lightweight batting in my regular bra.  It was fine. I am still bandaged - I had a UMX, too.
