Hello all! I've had a long journey with reconstruction and am now scheduled for a lat flap on my left side due to healing issues with my initial reconstruction. I LOVE competing in triathlons and am worried that the lat flap is going to affect my range of motion. My PS says it shouldn't affect it too much, but I wanted to hear what others have experienced. Thanks so much!!!

I had 2 PS tell me I would have issues with range of motion with a lat flap that would negatively affect me when I cross country skied. Since that is an important recreation for me I decided to have a BMX/DIEP. The DIEP doesn't use any muscle at all. There are also hip flaps, pap flaps and stacked flaps for those who don't have much ab fat. There is also fat grafting over an implant which doesn't use muscle too.

Has anyone know if there are any other options for reconsruction after radiation besides the lat flap? I exercise a lot and have always been small so I dont qualify for tram. I was just on johns hopkins site and thet talked about a dap. I may have got the letters wrong, my memory is not what it used to be

Firefly, you would be surprised at where the donor tissue can come from. One can have stacked DIEP's, Pap, SGAP, etc. check out the NOLA thread, lots of different flap options with those docs. Also go to (diepflap.com) for other docs that do autologous tissue transfer. I had DIEP done by Dr. Levine in NYC but I had plenty od tissue so no need to stack. You may need to travel to get this done as really only the very skilled PS experienced in microsurgery do this well. Be sure that your surgeon specializes in this type of procedure and make sure there are going to be 2 microsurgeons doing the procedure. It keeps the time down that you are under anesthesia.
