Can anyone help me with Zoloft or Lexapro

I need some advice from anyone who has taken either Zoloft or Lexapro for depression/anxiety.  I have been on Zoloft for year prior to BC for depression/anxiety.  Worked great for me.  Prior to BC diagnosis,I felt as though Zoloft had lost its effectiveness somewhat.  After BC, I spoke with my dr. and went from Zoloft to Lexapro.  After 3 days on Lexapro, had some disturbing side effects, hyperventilating as I can't seem to catch my breath at times, increased anxiety, stomach issues as in stomach cramping, bad indigestion, stomach pain.  I am wondering if these issues are temporary.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  I will be calling my dr. on Monday.

Also what has been your experience on any anti-depressant you may be taking.  (((hugs)))  P.S.  I am at my wits end.  Xanax is all I can take to get me through the day to calm me down.

barbiecorn...I took Zoloft for two years nearly twenty years ago.  I started on Prozac.  After one day, on the Prozac, I became highly anxious and then suicidal.  The doctor said it couldn't possibly be the prozac because it couldn't have worked so quickly.  Fortunately, I had the wherewithall to know better.  I insisted he take me off the prozac and I was switched to zoloft.  I was fine within a few days.  I think that if you are experiencing issues with the lexapro, you should consider getting off of it quickly.  It may be related to bc treatments you are having, but it may not.  I strongly urge you to remember that is likely chemical, and that it likely can be improved by adjusting the medication.

Did you and your doctor consider adjusting the dosage on the zoloft before switching to lexapro?  Could that be an option?

Whatever happens, if the side effects get worse, please consider seeing someone before Monday.  The hyperventilating and anxiety are particularly concerning.

Wishing you all the luck with this...  Hang in there!

Hi, I took Lexapro for a few months and had no side effects from it. I changed to Efexor to help reduce hot flashes. It's ok but I think the Lexapro was more effective for me in terms of lifting my mood.

If you are on Tamoxifen, there are some antidepressants that may interfere with its action. Lexapro is one of those.

I'm so sorry you have to deal with this.  After BC< my doctor put me on Lexapro because I was having crazy panic attacks and anxiety, which turned out to be from tamoxifen.  But for me, the lexapro did nothing, even after two weeks.  I didn't have any SE's other than being starving in the middle of the night - definitely an increase in appetite!   I finally removed myself from it after two weeks and I did it cold turkey with the help of my naturopath.  I know I was supposed to wean myself from it but I just wanted to be "done".

Lexapro is really helpful to MANY people.  the kind of reaction you're having with the breathing though - I wonder  if that is an allergic reaction.  I had that kind of not feeling that I could catch my breath once with something my naturopath gave me - it was a weird feeling.  My lungs could get air but I felt like I wasn't getting oxygen.  I went to him immediatley and he said that is an allergic reaction.

Lexapro can cause increased anxiety in some people - I do remember that.  Can you take ativan at all?  That tiny pill is my favorite - but you have to be careful with it long term, like xanax.  I have side effects to xanax --so I love ativan.

I so appreciate your responding to me.  I just took another one this morning and am feeling that I need to catch my breath...I am taking a xanax now...with the xanax that feeling stops so maybe I am allergic to it...don't know...I just keep hyperventilating with this so it is definitely causing more anxiety but yesterday I was okay with it and xanax but I went into a horrible depressive feeling in the aftrnoon....my psychiatrist had me on 100 mg. of Zoloft which worked fine for a long time but after the BC - it seemed to not be working......tried upping it to 150 which made me feel worse.  Then my dr. tried adding Abilify which made me feel worse after a day or two  - Maybe I should have tried 125 of Zoloft....anyway I am not taking any treatments right now for Bc so it is not the treatment meds....between Bc and how I am feeling  and working also - well, I would like to crawl into bed but I am too hyper right now...Looking forward to my xanax working.  Xanax works great for anxiety or panic attacks which I have suffered for years but need the anti-depressants for the depression and again after BC the depression and anxiety just got worse.  I never had a problem taking xanax or not taking xanax...only take it as needed and never got addicted to it.  Any other information from you gals would be appreciated.  Also Lexipro does cause stomach issued but I remember Paxil doing that to me and I muddled through it and that side effect went away.  I am just too stressed to deal with any side effects right now - just need some peace and my daughter is getting married in June - maybe this was not the right time to change meds?  Who knows...(((hugs to all my sisters))) and Good Health to all!!!!

I was on Zoloft for probably 15 years just fine. Around the BC diagnosis, we had to add Welbutrin. You may not need more Zoloft, you may need a different kind of mood elevator added. It is a fine cocktail to mix, but each drug does something different. Having cancer certainly adds to your stress. Zoloft kept anger at bay for me. Welbutrin kept depression away. I am off both of them now as they were replaced by Seroquel during a crisis and now I am down to only 25 mgs of Seroquel (from 200!!!) and am almost off that. I truly believe those of us with chemical imbalances may need long-term medication, just like diabetics do. It takes months to find the perfect mix. Good luck!

I also tried both and had no luck. The only thing that seemed to work for me was Xanax. I had to take it about an hour before bed, since it made me sleepy. I was on it for about two years during my reconstruction. I'm off it now but with a new health issue I'm needing it again, just haven't asked for it yet.

    By the way hi Barbe!

I've been on Lexapro for 6 years and have had no side effects other than crazy dreams. I take it at night - right before bed. I've been on Xanax since the BC diagnosis, but I only take it when needed. I hope you find something that works for you. I'd be a real mess without these drugs!

Thanks you ladies...I am trying to hold off going off of the Lexapro to give it a good try....Barbe you may be right, I might need the Zoloft and something else...my psychiatrist hasn't suggested that yet...I don't think I am allergic to Lexapro because when I take the xanax, the anxiety calms down and I am not deep breathing like I am without the xanax...I would assume if I were allergic, the hyperventilating wouldn't go away and it does with the xanax.  I too would be a real mess without these drugs...especially since the BC, I have never been under such stress and I am sure we all feel the same way.  Thank you again for your input and if you have any more comments or suggestions, please send them my way...thanks to my sisters!!!!  (((((hugs)))))
