Genetic testing?

I saw 2 oncologists after my DCIS diagnosis and unilateral mastectomy almost 3 years ago. Neither mentioned or suggested BRCA testing. I guess I didn't give it much thought until a gyn nurse partitioner gave me info on it and suggested I give it some thought. I guess I figured with DCIS I didn't need it. I'm having 2nd thoughts now. I was 47 at diagnosis, no family history, 2 children, boy/girl.

Do any of you have any thoughts or opinions?

My bs sent me for both brca1&2 testing and an mri after my dcis diagnosis. I was 43 at diagnosis, also have 2 children (b/g), and also have no family history. It made sense to have these tests done then so that we could make an informed decision about whether I should have a lumpectomy, mx, or bmx. Because both were favorable, I opted for a lumpectomy. That was 2+ years ago. I'm very glad I had these tests done at the time, but since you've already had the mx, not sure what you would do with the information.

A genetic counselor can help you decide whether BRCA testing is appropriate for you or not. Perhaps your onc can give you a referral to one. Caryn
