Hi everyone - looking good!  I went for a trim this weekend...my hair seems to just get bigger still rather than longer.  My hairdresser noticed that it's growing sort of haphazardly - it was all pretty uneven.  Anyway...she also noticed that the back of my head seems to be pretty straight but I still have curly hair at the front.  I think I may let the front grow a bit and see what happens.....sigh,

BTW Tracie....your hair looks awesome, I'm jealous.

Momine--what a wonderful hairline you have! (I have a receding hairline, so I'm always green-eyed of great ones like yours ;)  Your coverage looks nice and even, too--congrats!

Marjie--Im having similar hair issues, except the back of my hair is still curly but my front is getting straighter.  Wish we could put our heads together!

Momine - are you having yours trimmed or is that coming in on it's own so perfectly??

I'm 11 months PFC and for all who are struggling with this weird new hair texture that grows straight out (like Jiffy Pop), here's a photo to make you laugh. This was taken 5 minutes after I woke up this morning-DH laughs about it and says it's very Don King...

    11 months PFC upon waking

Here's what it looks like after it's washed and air dried with some gel in it:
    11 months PFC natural curl

And here's what it looks like after I flat-iron the top (I wear it natural or flat-ironed depending on my mood-it's fun to actually have some choices now that there is some length):
    11 months PFC flat-ironed

My hair definitely seems to be growing faster now that I'm done with Herceptin.

Momine-you look fantastic!!  I am getting excited to not need a scarf, wig or hat.

I saw my Oncologist Friday.  He told me I don't need to come for 6 weeks....I graduated!!  I have been there every week since September.  I asked him if he would miss me?!  of course he chuckled.  I proceeded to tell him that next time I see him I will be topless!  He turned red as can be!  I told him that I meant my head!!  Love that term!  I am hoping in four weeks I can be "topless"

Hi ladies, I haven't read the last 10 pages of this thread as I don't have as much time nowadays.

This week I am a year pfc. My hair au natural would look very much like dragonfly's. (Have you had any cuts, dragonfly?).

I had hair extensions put in at Christmas and also had my hair chemically straightened in February. The straightening has lasted well with no further curling evident yet.

I haven't had any cuts and my length is 3 - 3.5 inches overall. It has been growing since 7 weeks pfc, so that averages out to about an inch every 15 weeks. I did expect swifter growth. They say the average is half inch per month so my rate is about half the average.

I'm really pleased to have got the extensions and straightening.

Just wanted to post my experience to give an indication of what you can expect.

Good luck to you all with your hair and recovery overall.

dragonfly1--My hair looked exactly like yours at that stage...except I had lots more grey that I colored.  I'm 15 mos. PFC, so the length has helped weigh it down as I keep the sides and back shorter.  Yours is a very nice color, too.  I use a straightening, leave-in gel from Aveda (a gift from my little sis) that really helps tame and soften my hair.  I don't blow-dry mine, either--helps keep the frizzies down--and I use a ton of conditioner.  My shine has returned, so hang in there--more length will help control the curl. You're looking wonderfully well and happy! :)

Dragonfly - I'd take that hair ANY way it went...lol - I personally like the wilder look of the first picture :-)

Racy - how long was your hair when you did extensions and how long has that lasted?

Dragonfly, I'm 6 months behind you, but I have a strong feeling that my hair is going the same direction as yours.  I hope a little more length will help it settle down - I know I should be happy to have hair at all, but I dislike being a poodlehead!

Racy Yes, I've had my hair cut twice-mainly out of frustration because I couldn't figure out what to do with it so I had it cut short again each time. It hasn't been cut in several months now and I'm finally embracing the weirdness and letting it grow:) I've considered straightening when I get some more length.

dragonfly1, You hair looks great. I am the same wild bedhead when I wake up in the morning. It takes more time to care for short hair than it does for long hair.

Thanks everybody and dragonfly, looking good. I like the gel look a lot.

As for the questions, yes, the front came in slower than the back. When I had the fuzz and weird long hairs coming in, about 4 weeks after chemo, I buzzed it off with a beard trimmer. That way the real growth started from the same point. My hair was always really coarse and straight, and it seems to be coming back the same way. Maybe I will develop chemo curls at some point, but so far, no sign of them. I never had curls as a baby either.

AEM and the lady who asked a few pages back about extensions, the type I have is weft extensions, that is two 'panels' of hair on bands that span across the back of the head and are attached via strands of the natural hair being woven into the band to hold the wefts in place. There is one weft quite high near the crown and the second level with the top of the ears. There is also a small toupe piece that clips onto the top of the head to cover the short growth there but the hair on the toupe is as long as the extensions. The overall length of the do is a bit past the shoulders. I had to wait until my natural hair was about 2.5 inches long to be long enough to attach the extensions. I got them just before Christmas (8 months pfc).

The two wefts are very light, feel natural and wash as normal hair. Often I just wear them with a cap or hat and leave the toupe off. I am waiting for the top to grow long enough that I can dispense with the toupe and blend in my natural top layer with the weft extensions.

I had to get my real hair straightened to stop the chemo curls poking through the extensions everywhere.

The system that I got is Australian but hopefully you have something similar where you are. There is no glue or heat used so it doesn't damage the hair. Initial cost was about $1000 plus I have to go every 6 - 8 weeks to have the wefts moved as my hair grows. The cost for that is about $130 each time. Lucky I can afford it.

I hope my explanation helps but let me know if you have any further questions.

Momine and Dragonfly, thank you for posting your photos and giving those of us lagging behind you some hope!! I'm 8 weeks PFC and am just now seeing a "5-o'clock shadow," a hint of hair coming back. Of course it's coming in almost purely white, which makes it hard to see. I colored my hair for 20 years, so it's shocking to see my "real" color. I look about 100 years old.

How soon can you color?? Right now, I guess I'd just be coloring scalp...

You ladies all look great...you too Charles!  Thanks for sharing pics.  I am about 4 weeks PFC but still on Herceptin til December.  Mine started growing back during chemo but was uneven and I had some wispy strands.  It was also gray!  The nurses at my center suggested I shave it one more time to allow it to come in more evenly and hopefully thicker.  I had very thick curly hair before chemo.  It seems to have worked!  I have about 1/8 inch so far and my DH comments on how fast it is growing.  Of course to me I still look totally bald!  I can't wait to post an encouraging pic myself!

WaveWhisperer....me too. I knew I was greying BUT looking like an old man was kinda shocking. The back and top show some darker colour but the sides are pure white..oh well just grateful for hair. I am almost 12 weeks PFC.
