New lump in other breast

Options

I found a pea sized lump in my "good" breast and am freaking out.  Luckily I had an order for a follow-up 6 month mammo which I thought was only for my right cancer breast but, when I read it realized it was written for both breasts.  It is scheduled for Wednesday.  My question is: IF its cancer again would it be a recurrence or a new primary?  Since my original cancer was on the right side.  I just finished Herceptin in Jan and got my port out in Feb...I finished my other chemos last March 1 year ago.  Cancer sucks! Cry

    Hi Mmahle46

It is most likely to be a new primary. It's called a 'contralateral' breast cancer when it appears in the other breast to your original tumour. The same has just happened to me and I ended up having a bilat mast in Dec 2011. If this does turn out to be cancer you are not alone - and yes cancer sucks!! This, as they say, is out new reality!

I am hoping for the best for you. It's great that you are being so vigilent too as, if it is cancer again, you have no doubt caught it early. Keep us updated XX

I can share that I also got a lump  in the "good breast" (2011).  I have been stage IV since 2009 though.  It was cancer.  I chose to have this remaining breast removed which was done this past November.  The pathology was exactly the same as the cancer in the opposite breast.    Oncologist told me there was no way to tell if this new lump was part of my metastatic disease or a new primary.  The  pathology after the mastectomy found an additional 2.9 cm hidden mass that was not seen on PET or mammo.

A lot of lumps are not cancer, so hang in there until all the tests and biopsies are done.  Best of luck to you.  Take care.  Jean

Thank you Ladies for the support.  I really don't have a good feeling about it.  It feels really hard and unmovable just smaller. However, you know how the mind can play tricks on you.

Hang in there and thanks again.

I had the mammogram and ultrasound.  While they could feel the lump with the ultrasound wand nothing showed up.  Not sure if I should be happy or still scared...I have my PET scan on May 7 and see my Oncologist on May 10.  I guess we will go from there.

I had two different breast cancers, one in each breast, a year apart, then bilateral mastectomies to reduce the risk of any more. Yes, cancer really sucks. It's awful to feel so anxious when you're waiting for scan results. I hope you get good news. Take care X

Hi Mmahle46 - I just want to give you a word of caution. My lastest episode of BC did not show up on PET, ultrasound or mammo! It was palpable so they gave me a biopsy and it was diagnosed then. If, like me, you have dense breast tissue - it may not show up on mammo and ultrasound plus I was told that my form of DCIS was fast moving with lack of calcification (so lack of dead cancer cells which show up nicely on mammo). The PET scan is unlikely to show up DCIS (if that's what it is) as it has not yet become invasive. I would ask your medical team for a biopsy - even with a clean PET. Sorry if this may worry you but I had 4cm of high grade DCIS which was 'invisible' to any scans. My own vigilence meant that I  knew there were changes and I caught this early before it became invasive and thankfully no more chemo on this occasion.

Can you ask for an MRI - that might show if there is a problem.

That's a possibility susieq58 - I was told that my new BC might have shown up on MRI. But even if it did - they would need to biopsy to get a firm diagnosis. I know that in the UK, even with clean scans, they have a protocol of doing a biopsy if the lump / area is palpable. Plus my case was strengthened by the fact I had a previous diagnosis. Ultimately, only a biopsy will give the facts.

Thanks Karen3 I will bring up a biopsy to my oncologist I see him on the 10th.  I just really thought it was strange that they couldn't see anything on the ultrasound.  She kept saying I can feel it with my wand but nothing is showing.   Thank God you remained on top of yours and they did the biopsy and it was caught.  Thanks for all your comments and I will let you know what happens.  Hang in there!
