Flax vs. Chia - any thoughts?
I'm confused about what to do here - my oncologist recommended I not supplement with flax, but a nutritionist I saw said it was fine and not an issue for my ER pos cancer. Do chia seeds have the same benefit, without the controversy?

Sorry no one has reponded to your post, I have the same question. Found this when I googled for information:
http://www.highonhealth.org/why-chia-seed-is-a-healthier-option-than-flax-seed/
No idea of the reliability of this above site. Hope someone with more information about this will find this thread & respond.

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center states "Because flaxseed has phytoestrogenic effects, patients with estrogen receptor positive (ER+) type of breast cancer should avoid it." (http://www.mskcc.org/cancer-care/herb/flaxseed). There is no such warning on the chia seed page (http://www.mskcc.org/cancer-care/herb/chia)

I know that the pharmacy at the Tom Baker provided a list of things to avoid, especially with my Tamoxifen and flax seeds are on there. I'd listen to your onc, not the nutritionist. They are phytoestrogenic and since you have ER+, I'd go with the chia seeds. They taste better anyway and you can make Chia Chocolate Pudding with just a cup of chocolate milk and a few tablespoons of chia seeds. It's kind of like tapioca.
Out of curiousity, is the nutritionist with your hospital/cancer centre or are they independent?

Thanks BouncingBetties. The nutritionist is with my cancer center, but I'm with you about going with my onc. I will have to try out your recipe - sounds good!

I asked my naturopath about this and she was very clear that flax seeds (ground) are very beneficial for regulating the right kind of estrogen and that chia seeds are only a good source of omega 3. I understand that the idea is to not completely eradicate estrogen but to make sure it is the right kind. She has a lot of experience working with cancer patients. I would rather take her word for it than my oncologist who really doesn't know anything about alternative therapies. Shona

Flax should be avoided. Go with the Chia seeds.

My ob-gyn and I sat down, looked at all my estrogen levels (which I had tested), and discussed how to regulate them. According to her, flax is great for regulating your various estrogens in the right directions. (Sorry - I know that is vague, but I am too tired to write a detailed explanation.) I put 1.5 Tbsp of ground flax and 1Tbsp of ground chia seed in my morning smoothie.

Had never heard of chia, but have been taking flax, either as seeds, or sprouting flax powder for a few months now... a question which has always bothered me is whether the intake of estrogen/phyto estrogen in various foods (soya and flax for example) is contra-indicated in all women with bc, including those who, like me, were triple negative from the start...
