In Limbo/Purgatory - Waiting for Surgery
Hey all!
Diagnosed 2/22/12 (feels like 5 years, not 5 weeks ago) and have been lurking ever since. My BS told me to check out this site, and it's been a godsend! I haven't felt I had any wisdom to add, so I've held off on posting, but finally I just had to chime in to say "hello" and "thank you" to everyone.
BMX with tissue expanders is scheduled for May 1 (I'm anxiously awaiting someone to start a May Mastectomy Topic!). Normally, the wait would probably be driving me to drink, but we're in the middle of a move (from CT to FL). Although moving in the middle of a BC adventure, sounds a little nutty, the packing, painting and primping the house has been a great distraction.

LastMango - sorry you had to come here, but glad you found us, and welcome to the forum!!!
Unfortunately, waiting is the worst part. Waiting for biopsies, waiting for results, waiting for surgery dates....
I was dx'd in September and had to wait til December for my BMX w/TEs! Now I can't believe it was almost four months ago!!!
Good for you for continuing to stay busy. We were right in the middle of some major house renovations when I was dx'd. I was glad for the distraction.
Just remember this: the anticipation (of the surgery and recovery) is WAY worse than the reality!!!!
Wishing you the best....

Wonderful to hear from you both. Thanks so much for the kind words and good thoughts!

LastMango- So glad you found this site. It has been a godsend for me and given me information as well as wonderful support through this forum. I'm on the March 2012 Masectomy thread in the Surgery section as well as some others. If you want, you can just start a May 2012 Masectomy thread. Don't be shy here because before long you will realize that you are truly not alone!!!! Sending you lots of (((HUGS))), positive thoughts, energy and prayers!!!!!!

Waiting for answers or even surgery when you have BC/ the chance of it is so hard and it affects everything you do and also keeping yourself busy is the best thing you can do so you don't drown in the "what Ifs and stuff"' because it is a hard cycle to break! I am glad you have found your way here for there is a great bunch of people here and they know how to distract, make you laugh and even understand what you are going through they have been a blessing to me as I am palliative and every day is a battle but I come through! Feel free to ask anything you need to and don't be afraid to repeat questions etc because having cancer is very shocking and can leave you feeling very scatter brained, panicky and many other things. As blessings20 said the anticipation of surgery / results is usually worse then the result but you will get the hang of it as you go along . The main thing is to remember there are lots of us around the world who will do what we can to see you through. Too once your settled into your new place and have some quiet time, give yourself permission to be or do what you need to do even if it is a good old fashioned cry! It will help let the pressure out of you. also if you have questions write them down , because sure as eggs by the time you get to the doctor next you will have forgotten or will be to nervy to ask as being in doctors rooms always stresses. Make sure they write down answers or they give you time to, so you can think on them in the peace of your home! Mastectomies and the thought of them can be scary but look at it this way if the powers that be will it and if you have Tram flap( wedge taken from belly to make new breast.s so you get a new breast/ s and a tummy tuck in one hit. This is the way I went with my reconstruction after losing my breasts because I refused to have anything artificial in my body and it has worked out though I didn't get the reconstruction till after treatment! at the time. so I am intact but palliative now, but I am at peace with myself for if I hadn't asked for a second opinion years ago(2004) I would be long gone! The important thing is not to give up on yourself , don't be afraid to put your hands up for help or to question things it is your body and your right I wish you luck, laughter and a great life in your new place and as I wonder this site when I feel well enough to I may see you around!

Welcome Last. I started the April mx thread weeks ago, needed friends to wait with. Starting the May list sounds like good advise, in the mean time come visit us on the April thread!

Welcome to the club no one wants to be part of. This site has tremendous information and wonderful ladies. Good luck with your surgery!

Hello LastMango,
I'm in your same boat! I was diagnosed on March 7, but my BMX surgery will not take place until May 23rd. I'm having a diep-flap reconstruction, and am very nervous about everything! In some ways, though, the wait is a good thing because it gives me a chance to get some things in order.

Thanks ladies!
Sadie55 - I absolutely agree with you, that the "getting things in order" part is an upside to the waiting. As we're moving in the summer, getting the house packed and ready for the market has been a nice distraction, too. In an odd way it's like eating your brussel sprouts (waiting and making preparations) first so you can enjoy your chocolate cake (post-op R&R) later. However, since my last post, I've met my FL BS and PS and now have chosen to go with the FL docs instead of the Ct as they can do a nipple sparing/one step to implants. Now surgery is June 15th. So a little more waiting is in store for me. Best of luck to you!

Last Mango - I sent you a PM

Hi last mango
Sorry you had to join this club but the information on this site is awesome. I just wanted to wish you well with your surgery and to reassure you mine was much easier than I anticipated. I ended up having to wait 7 months from the time the lump was found till BMX due to many many screw ups and delays from my old primary doctor. If you have any questions about surgery feel free to pm me I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have. Best of luck and wishing you a speedy recovery from your surgery.

LastMango, I'm waiting for my lumpectomy on May 9th. I have my pre-op physical today and I'm hoping my personal physician can give me some answers and insights. Besides the new diagnosis and upcomming surgery I've been dealing with caretaking a very ill sister (who will recover from a life threatening condition) for about four months. It's the reason I scheduled my surgery a bit further out. Now wish I had it done ASAP.
I'm trying to find time to do things that I know will take care of some of the anxiety. I ride my bike, I zone out with computer games, I tap my leg all day long while I'm working. I see a therapist. I'm trying to not eat too much junk food which I find comforting but unhealthy. Trying not to use Ativan to get through the night. So far I've used it sparingly.
It's good that you have the move to keep you occupied, although that's a very stressful event in and of itself. I hope you can find time for some fun admidst the boxes.

i am to in the same boat diagnosed on 3-4 surgery scheduled for 5-4 is coming up but the more time that passes the more my nerves get to me.. to much time to think and research.. i have mad my decision to have a mastomy on left side i have dcis only in the left breast with expanders and inplants.. but the more i read i am wondering if i made the right decision.. wheather i should go for the double or not..

Surgery/lumpectomy FINALLY this coming Wednesday. I'm so looking forward to getting it over with. Then more waiting for the final pathology and then the onco-dcis testing and then who knows what? I'm trying to take it as it comes. Trying to plan for different scenarios and, at the same time, trying not to dwell on those scenarios too much. It's a little bit crazy making. I'm on the launch pad, T-minus 48:00 but I'm not sure where I'm going, how long I'll be in orbit or where I'll land. "Ground Control to Major Tom...."

All you can do is "take your protein pills and put your helmet on"
Good luck!
-
Thanks akmom! That made me smile.

I'm also new to this "club". And, when I see how long some of you had to wait for surgery, I don't feel so bad having to wait 2 months from diagnosis until next month's surgery. Nonetheless, I'm still waiting and waiting with a ticking time bomb in my breast. Every twinge in my breast or armpit makes me feel as if I've gone immediately from stage 0 to stage 3, ridiculous as that sounds. (With all kinds of apologies to those of you who have really experienced stage 3+. You probably think my little stage 0 concerns are thoughtless.)
Now that I have a date for SNB, BMX and DIEP (I'm learning a lot of new abbreviations), I'm finally sleeping more than 3-4 hours a night; the anxiety is at a manageable level.
