Too early for April 2012 mastectomy?

Woohoo Gabsbaba! I hope you took *all* the time in that shower that you wanted to! Even now, almost a month later, warm showers are actually helping me with the nerve pain/tightness.
Glad your sis could handle the drain stripping. My poor sis fainted on me so she got excused from that duty - lol. -
hi everyone....question for those who have gone to the other side of surgery:
if you are on pain killers in the hopsital and at home, aren't they strong enough to knock you out at night so that you sleep? I was thinking that would be the case but so many people are saying they can't sleep.
Another question: why all the pillows? Is there a real reason you need them around you or what. I didn't buy any additional other than what I have at home. Should I really?
And the drains: I was told that my insurance would cover a "visiting nurse" who could do the drain thing and although hubby has offered to do it I think I might have the nurse come. I'm sure it's going to gross me out and I hate the sight of blood and so does my girls...what do you think.
-
rtnyc - I didn't buy any new pillows, just used ones that I had. Since I had DIEP, sleeping flat wasn't an option because the abdomen was too tight, so I needed pillows to prop up my upper body, and then I didn't want my arm right up against my new breast, so I used a pillow to keep it away from the breast. But I didn't buy any special new pillows, just used what I have already.
I bet your husband can do your drains for you. Mine did, and I did them some too. If you're more comfortable with a nurse, I say go for it, but if you're OK with your husband, go with that, whatever you're most comfortable with.
-
Rtnyc - adding to cookie monster's response...I am on pain killers and muscle relaxers but still only sleep 2-3 hours at a time. I think the meds knock me out but as they wear off I awaken cuz of the pain creeping in. I'm on my recliner 24/7 still (6 days post op) and I have a small throw pillow on each side of me to prop up my arms and keep them from touching my sides. My drains come out through my arm pits and my ribs feel like I did a 1000 sit ups so having my arms down is uncomfortable. I also have a small pillow behind my back to prevent low back pain from recliner. Also they offered us a nurse also but we declined thinking it seemed easy enough but I wish we wouldn't have cuz I had to go back to the hospital on day 3 due to a clogged drain. The nurse probably could have stripped the drains better than we did.
-
cookiemonster and keonghi: thanks for the info all makes sense now. I don't konw why the doctors dont tell you all this, I'm so glad to have friends going through the same thing and we get to share expeiences and information; just wish none of us had to be here!! Thank you so much! continue to feel better every minute and every day.
-
it's a happy day. I just got my period 5 days early. So so glad I won't have to deal with that in the hospital next week. Does this everything else will be easy after surgery on the 23rd? I hope it's a good sign
-
Ladies- Yes the drains can be a pain. Before I was allowed to even check out of the hospital, the hospital nurses showed me and my DH how to care for the drains (stripping/draining) and gave us instructions on how to do it as well as a log to keep track of the amount of fluid. The nurses were explained the process until we got it. In short, if we couldn't leave until we knew how to take care of them. In fact, he/I had to sign some discharge papers stating that we understood what my home care would be and that he/I would call to make my follow up appointment witht the BS surgeon for the next week. Maybe, it's just this hospital's policy or maybe they know patients are the verge of discharge may not remember everything because they are so anxious to go home. If you would rather have a visiting nurse handle the drains, definitely go for it. You just have do what will help you recover from the surgery.

Will be thinking of you tomorrow Aussie and Jenny.
I'm Wed, want this over with already.
-
Sending you positive thoughts, aussie1 and Jennyrjd for tomorrow! Smooth procedures and speedy healing to you both.
Hope everybody's who's already had their surgery is doing well, healing nicely, feeling less and less pain. Plymouth, just another two days--treat yourself to fun things to keep your mind off the wait, you're almost there!
-
I had a UMX and have not had a need for extra/special pillows. I've been ok sleeping on my back or right side. I only have one drain and it needs to be emptied a few times a day. So, although I have a visiting nurse I still need to empty the drain on my own.
Best wishes for everyone having surgery this week. -
I just texted my PS and he told me that 2 of the 4 drains will be removed tomorrow! Yeah!

4/16 aussie1, Jennyrjd --got you in my pocket today. Rest well and let the good pain meds work for you.
4/18 Plymouth,Jayme, Kimmygal---got you with me as well. The anxiety of anticipation of the surgery is worse than anything. Once you are there, it will all go smoothlly and be done with. That is such a relief!
Lisamarie, you and I have the same diagnosis. Be good to yourself and don't worry so much. Healthcare providers always worry too much! Some advice on the recliner--get one that adjusts electrically with the push of a button. You won't be able to mess with a hand crank or rip cord to recline it.
Getting 2 drains removed today at noon Texas time! Yeah!

It is so good to see everyone is doing so well, waiting to get back to what used to be called NORMAL.
At 2 1/2 weeks out I can say that this morning I woke up feeling so much better. Not NORMAL yet, but not bad at all. The itching and nerve pain/tightness is still there and will be for some time, but since the drains came out last Friday and that has made a big difference.
My problems now are the anxiety waiting to see the oncologist. I cant eat, and I have lost 13 pounds since my surgery. Now part of the at the boob and skin that was removed in the TRAM, but my poor DH is trying so hard to make me food that I might eat. But after a bite or two I am done, nerves set in and no more. I have decided to start taking the anxiety meds again on a more regular basis, instead of two just to sleep.
Today I want to try to do a few things around the house, and maybe direct the DH in planting some things in the garden. Also since the drains are out I want to try to get out by myself. Love my DH and DD, but I want some time to just be alone and they just always seem to be checking on me. I know I need some alone time to process everything, but they just want to help me and I need to help myself.
Anyway, love and hugs but mostly prayers for all the April Surgery Sisters, you have meant the world to me.

Hi ladies. Sorry that I am not able to keep up with the postings. I read this thread everyday and still pray for you all everyday. I just wanted to let you all know that there is light at the end of the tunnel. I feel great!!!! I feel like myself again. That happened at day 8 or 9. So keep your chin up, things will be good again. xoxoxoxo!!!!
-
Hi cookiemonster, where did you have your diep done? I've been looking for a surgeon in southern cal. And thinking about going to new Orleans. Thanks. Hope all you strong fighters are having a fast recovery!

miranda43 - I had my surgery at UCLA. Charles Tseng is my PS, Nova Foster is my BS. I really like Dr. Foster, she's been great through this whole thing, we think along similar lines, which is nice. When we finally decided on Mastectomy, she and I had arrived at that place at the same time. Dr. Tseng is great, he did beautiful work for my DIEP (I know that sounds weird but it's true). There are a couple of other plastic surgeons at UCLA who do the DIEP surgery as well. I know a few people on BCO who rave about Dr. Festekjian (he assisted on mine). I've also heard good things about Dr. Giuliano at Cedars.
I feel like my doctors, being at a research institution, are very up to date about everything. I've had nothing but good experiences with them.
-
One week from right now I will be in an OR. Yikes!!!! Most of the time, i'm really OK with it all, but then every once in a while it creeps up and whacks me in the stomach with a bat. Cancer sucks! (But we are all made of Awesome-Sauce and will kick it's sorry ass!)
-
Got a letter today from Genomic Health and my MO ordered the Oncotype dx and the insurance is going to pay 100% even though I had 4 positive nodes. I am so glad. I did not want to do chemo without the test.
Aussie1 and Jennyrid- in your pockets today.
-
Great news Dianarose..
I got a ??? what is ur opinion on getting a tattoo tomorrow with surgery one week away ??? will it be a bad idea .. ??
-
Thanks to all for positive thoughts. Finished work today and got a massage. In a better place now, resigned and accepting. Love and positive thoughts to all those healing and waiting.
-
Plymouthpeople: Hugs to you. I am post op day 6 and had 2 of 4 drains removed this afternoon. It did not hurt at all to have them pulled. It has lightened my load a bunch. I also walked about 2 miles total today.
You will do fine. Massage is a great idea. I am glad that it helped you to relax a bit.
One thing that I discovered was that I have been having chest wall muscle spasms and no amount of pain medicine works on that. Flexeril is a muscle relaxer that I asked for and it has helped a lot. If the pain pills are not working and you are feeling the muscles between your ribs tighten and hurt, I recommend that you talk to your doc about a muscle relaxer (Flexeril, Valium, or Soma). The nurses at the hospital were totally oblivious to this until I asked for it.
I got you in my pocket!
-
I also had 2 of 4 drains pulled today! And, they removed the bandages and I saw my stitches for the first time. I was very emotional which was unexpected cuz I thought I was okay with everything. Then the doc told me that he was going to do everything he could to get me to my 95th bday (I'm 44). So as much as this all sucks, I just have to remind myself that it saving my life. As for the muscle relaxers, I absolutely agree about the need for them. I was in 4 hours of agony after surgery because of spasms. Once they were able to contact the plastic surgeon he prescribed them. So those still waiting to go in, you may want to talk to your docs to make sure you will have them immediately after surgery.
-
Plymouth, Jayme, and Kimmygirl , I am praying you all have relaxing evnings and to let you know I will be hopping in and out of all ur pockets tomorrow .. Hugs and Love to you all .. see u on the other side ...
-
