Zoladex injections...

I was 24 diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. Tumor was 6+cm. I found it during my first pregnacy, grew rapidly, but miscarried and went on with aggressive chemo which included Zoladex injections for premenopause, followed by bilateral mastectomy (BRCA 1 positive), and finished with radaiation. Orginally was node + , but after surgery they couldn't find anything in the nodes they removed. YAY! I refused the 5 year pill afterwards, because I want to still have children. Was told I am estrogen low. (not completely sure of what that is) My periods started back about 4 months ago now. I want to know if there is any young women who have been on Zoladex treatment and still have become pregnant and carried full term after cancer treatments? How long did it take you to conceive? 

Im really worried, I want to know its possible! I know the odds are higher ill go into permanent menopause earlier, and they can't determine how long I have left for ovarian function. Stupid Chemo :(

    Hi Melinda,

     I was just about to start trying for a baby when I got diagnosed with my BC. As my cancer was 100% hormone sensitive they recommended against IVF before I started my chemo, so in order to slightly increase my chances of gettting pregnant after, they gave me Zoladex. I was told that this would decrease the blood flow to my uterus and therefore provide it with some form of protection during chemo.

    So I'm hoping this means this means that you having been on Zoladex will improve your chances rather than prevent you from getting pregnant.

    I will keep my fingers crossed that it all works out for you and I agree with your last comment, stupid chemo :(

    Melinda: I am 26 and have stage 1 BC. I am on Tamoxifen and Zoladex injections as mine was 100% ER positive. The tamoxifen does not make you sterile nor does the Zoladex. I am doing both for hopefully 5 years and then will try having children then (hoping it doesn't coming back). I will be 32 by the time it is over so still a good age to have children. I guess I am curious why you refused Tamox if you can still get pregnant after? Did you want children sooner? I did not do chemo, so did not do any IVF or egg harvesting since my fertility won't be an issue...

    yes, my husband and I were trying for a child when the cancer had struck me. We want to continue to try and have child(ren) asap. This is why I refused the Tamox. And also because of the hard chemo drugs I was on, they destroyed some of my eggs and they arent sure when I will go into permanent menopause and how many good eggs I have left. So we decided not to take the chance on going into early menopause again before we had our child(ren).

    Hope my story helps you.

    I did six months of Zoladex injections during my chemo to help protect my ovaries from chemo damage. My period returned 6 months after the last injection, 5 months after chemo finished. (I refused Tamoxifen as I wanted to get pregnant well within the 5 years) I conceived 2 months later but lost that pregnancy, conceived again 15 months after last injection (had not been trying hard, it was an unplanned pregnancy) and my son was born hale and hearty in August last year, almost 2 years to the day from my last Zolodex shot. And I was 36 during chemo so much older than you.

     You'll be completely fine!
