Need Bracelet?
Hi i had a bilateral mastectomy and all lymph nodes out one side. Do i need to get a medic alert bracelet? As prevention for lymphedema or wait until i am sure i have it.

My RO sent me to a LE PT before I started radiation (I didn't have nodes removed but she was aggressively radiating my axilla and supraclavicular nodes on my right). Part of the preventive steps the LE PT said was to get a medic alert bracelet.
So, I think it's a good idea in the preventive steps. -
beth - I had a node dissection and did develop mild LE on that side. I do have a bracelet but before I engraved it I called my son, who is a fireman/EMT, and asked him if he knew what lymphedema was. He said that he did not. I engraved my bracelet with "no needles/BP/IV right arm" so there would be no confusion. I also have a Road ID, which is a rubber bracelet with a stainless steel tab with the same info. I use that when I exercise - it is like a Livestrong bracelet. Since a needle stick or BP cuff can possibly cause lymphedema it would be wise to be preventive.

Thanks Reesie and Specialk- I have bought a medic alert bracelt today and getting it engraved this week. I appreciate your opinions and info. I am also going to look for a rubber one too.
Its a good idea about engraving exactly what instructions i need followed. It actually did not occur to me someone might not be familar with my needs but now its been brought up i can see many people being confused through the years as i have already met many hospital staff who did not know whatr to do.

Thanks for bringing this up. My bracelet broke about a month ago and I was too lazy to order another one. Just did, finally, yesterday. Caryn

Nordy ~ Thanks a lot for the info on the Creative Medical ID website. Great looking bracelets that actually can pass as jewelry you might "want" to wear!
Special K ~ The above mentioned website actually has you wording as a recommended one for BC bracelets. I was going to write your suggestion down, but since they have it on their website I won't have to strain my chemo brain! Linda

I bought mine online but had picked up a flier with the company name at my pharmacy.
I bought the cheapest and wear it all the time, maybe I will splurge for a good one some day
it also helps to remind me to remind the nurses when blood draw is taken

Thanks for the info. I just ordered one for myself.
