Back spasm.....fearful... Advice..help
Hi ladies, I depend on the women on this site to help me be objective and occasionally talk me off a few ledges.....
I had my 1 year PFC check up about 2 months ago...all seemed good and planning for nipple recon and future....
I was helping my 4year old nephews put together their Playmobile Fire Station on Sunday and reached for a piece I needed .. A little twist and agony...muscle spasm, couldn't walk for awhile, but it did subside somewhat...was able to fly home etc... But I'm still hurting....
I'm a runner, and about two weeks ago my hip really hurt...this went away, I have had LD flap recon too....and chemo put me into menopause....about a year and a half since I had a period....
I don't know what to think....is this how mets would present?..am I letting my mind go to that "dark" place??... Is some of this menopause related.....
Thanks for your thoughts!

Generally, mets don't present like that. Mets are a constant pain, not brought on by an activity and it doesn't go away. When pain comes and goes like that, it's likely a pulled muscle or arthritis pain. Menopause definitely increased my joint pain, and I find that pain in my knees and ankles to be very different from the relentless burning pain of a bone met.
You should always check with your onc, of course! But a general rule of thumb I hear a lot is if there is a specific, local pain that last for 2 weeks and is constant that whole time, then you should have it checked out.
I find massage to really help with back muscle spasms, also epsom salt baths. Hope you feel better soon!

Petjunkie (I am too!) ....thanks for responding....I did put a call into my onc but wanted to hear from all of you....I'm just fearful....and don't want to always go to WCS ..(worst case scenario...). :-)

Bump...any additional thoughts, help?
-
Lmflynn, I have these kinds of thoughts also. I think it is our new "normal." But it sounds like you pulled a muscle and may be feeling lingering SEs from chemo. Best wishes!
-
Lmflynn I think we will always worry about aches and pains. I've had really intense back pain that has been unrelenting since January and wakes me up every night in pain. Well, of course I was convinced I had mets, especially when I read that night pain is particularly ominous. I waited months partially because I was afraid and partially because I was trying very hard not to overreact.
Finally, I had a CT scan that showed 2 bulging discs in my back and a benign lesion on my hip (which has also been painful). I'm 42 and I never had any back or joint problems before. I'm convinced that menopause and Tamoxifen somehow caused these issues. I've been in chemo-induced menopause for 14 months. Anyway, I hope this makes you feel better. It sounds like you pulled a muscle or have spasms from a disc problem. Sincerely hoping for a benign cause for your pain!

aging has it's own problems and presentations.

That doesn't sound like mets and you had a clear, precipitating factor. I think you can be reasonably confident you just hurt your back.

Thank you all so much. Going to doc tomorrow....never thought id find myself wishing for a bad back ....but you've helped me not totally go over the ledge until I can find out.....
-
To all you ladies who helped...I so appreciate it. Just want all to know that I had X-rays done on Friday....all loos good!...I have some arthritis in my back and hip.....I'm so relieved ....I stressed so much from the X-rays til when doc called me.
Thanks again!! -
Now start breathing and rejoice! So happy to hear you are just in pain for all the normal reasons, lol! Isn't it amazing how we'll take any pain and any other malady - and be thankful for it. God, I hate cancer. Be well, stay well.
Linda
