"quote"
I am new to breastcancer.org forums so maybe there is already a way to do this and I just haven't found it yet....on other forums I frequent, it's possible to "quote" another comment if you want to respond directly to something another person has written. I wanted to do this just now with an old comment on the "Latissimus Dorsi reconstruction" thread, but couldn't figure out how. I tried to indent the earlier comment and also to change it to italic and leave what I was responding in plain text, but when I submitted my comment, the text of the earlier post and my response looked exactly the same.
Is there a way to "quote" an earlier comment? If so, how do I do it?

curveball, these forums aren't set up with that "quote" feature that's seen in some other discussion boards. Members use various ways to indicate they're replying to a specific post, such as showing the name of the person they're answering in bold, or showing the quoted text in italics, or "between quotation marks."

Yesterday I tried to put the quote in italics and my reply in plain text, but it didn't work. If the quote above isn't indented and in italics, it didn't work today either. What am I doing wrong?
Please consider adding the quote feature next time there is an upgrade to the forum software.
thx
well, half of it worked.

Cut and paste works for me.

curveball, I typically use the methods suggested by the Moderators in their reply. I use quotation marks to point out that I'm quoting someone's exact words. Sometimes I'll also use the "I" formatting feature to put the quoted material in italics. If I'm quoting a long statement (a whole paragraph, for instance), I'll even set the quoted material apart with a row of "+++++++++" and the phrases "quote begins" and "quote ends" as appropriate.
I think you might be dealing with formatting problems. The sentence you quoted in your most recent post (17 hours ago) is in a gray typeface that's smaller than the standard font. It is italicized, but it's not indented, at least on my screen.
Here's a direct quote from your own statement in that post. I've copied and pasted the sentence, and put it in italics (with quotation marks):
"Yesterday I tried to put the quote in italics and my reply in plain text, but it didn't work. If the quote above isn't indented and in italics, it didn't work today either. What am I doing wrong?"
I'm doing an experiment. Here's the same sentence. This time, I copied your statement and pasted it into a Word document. Then I copied it again from the Word document, and pasted it here. Finally, I applied italics and inserted quotation marks.
"Yesterday I tried to put the quote in italics and my reply in plain text, but it didn't work. If the quote above isn't indented and in italics, it didn't work today either. What am I doing wrong?"
The reason I've tried it both ways (direct copy/paste, and copy/paste to Word then copy/paste to here) is because sometimes when I copy directly from a web page to a BCO post the pasted material ends up in a small, gray font (like the material you quoted in your most recent post).
I know of no way to make the material you're quoting from an earlier post come out "indented and in italics". Indenting a quote hasn't worked for me here at BCO the way it does in other discussion boards. Still, though, it's easy enough to block-copy and use quotation marks, and note in your post that you're quoting someone's previous remarks... isn't it?

Cut and paste is annoying too, because it causes a pop-up box to show up and the mouse doesn't work, you have to control c and control v. But, it's the only way.
A simple quote function is handy to keep conversations easy to follow. I'm sure the mods will take this request under consideration for future forum updates.

Thanks!
