BlairK- so glad your wife has decided to do the chemo.Smile As you know, I did the exact same chemo regime and did very well. If I can recommend anything, it is to take all the meds whether your wife feels she needs them or not. I had no nausea ever, maybe queasy one day due to my olfactory system being heightened tremendously.Tongue outAlso,I took Boo's advice and rested as much as possible. I found that helped me rebound from the fatigue quicker after each cycle. Good Luck to her!! and if you ever have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!!

When I first found out that I would be doing chemo they told me I would be doing TCH - Taxotere, Carboplatin and Herceptin. But when I started doing it I asked the nurse if that's what I was getting and she said no Cytoxan not Carboplatin. It bugged me because they had given me the side effects sheet for the Carboplatin. When I began having side effects that I needed to call the doctor after hours I asked what the C is that I should be getting and he said Carboplatin. The next day I called the nurse and she told me the doctor is giving me Cytoxan because Carboplatin can cause permanent neuropathy. Ijust finished the chemo part and start just the herceptin in January. I havent' had any serious side effects thank God!!

Blair (and anyone else who wants to chime in),

Did you ever get an explanation as to why they were recommending cytoxan over carboplatin for your wife?

In general, I'm reading that cytoxan has fewer side effects (esp. neuropathy), but I don't believe I've seen any data on the efficacy of cytoxan vs carbo in treating Her2+ patients.  Is anyone aware of any new data released on this?  I read the one study mentioned previously, which said it was well tolerated - but it didn't talk about how effective it was re: recurrence rates.

    dancetrancer,

I don't know of any efficacy data when substituting  cytoxan for carboplatin.  There is a phase II study, but it looked at safety, not efficacy.  See http://journals.lww.com/oncology-times/Fulltext/2010/02251/TC___Trastuzumab_Has_Low_Rate_of_Cardiac_Events_at.2.aspx

Hi Ann,  I understand how overwhelmed you must be feeling at this time. Its almost a year since I was in your shoes facing chemo after undergoing surgery. I met an angel who was 3 yrs out of treatment looking athletic and radiant and who inspired me over the next few months. I had your exact same agents, so I can tell you what I went through. For starters, the nausea was so minimal on the excellent premeds they give. You can get benadryl, steroids and ondansetron prior to the chemo. What happens is that after a day the steroids effects wear off and you start feeling a little tired. I took off from day 3 to day 6 after each cycle (had 4 total) but worked the rest of the time. My schedule was lightened but helped me to keep active by waking up, walking from parking and so on. My tastebuds took a hit each cycle but would pick up after a week. I did not lose any weight but gained 4 lbs after chemo. Eat healthy, keep walking as much as you can. I lost my hair by 3rd week but I shaved it all off after 10 days after cycle 1. So no trauma seeing clumps of hair in the shower or pillow. Now a year out, my hair is growing like a forest all upright and is almost 3 inches long. My eyelashes and eyebrows thinned but did not fall out completely. I wore a wig till Mar and then going natural. Herceptin was just done in June. My cardiac function took a hit but picked up again while continuing treatment. I did not have any symptoms. Looking back, I feel it is doable. With Her 2neu positive state, chemo and Herceptin are big guns to prevent recurrence. Go for it and take one day at a time. Hope this helps.
