March 2012 chemo

I was diagnosed as Triple Negative from the start. If you have any questions about TN, I'll be glad to answer what I can! I recall reading somewhere that a weak HER2+ is treated as a negative but I don't remember why. If I find out, I'll let ya know.
-
Jeanne: gotta love those delivered meals! I have a freezer full at the moment, wating for my next cycle when I can't move off the couch. Glad to hear you sounding so well, and that your wrist isn't hurting you too badly. Jealous that you love your wig... I don't at all, but maybe it will grow on me...
-
I have a SE that I haven't read about yet. I am day 8 from TCH#2 of 6. I experience a burning sensation during urination. I had the same issue after TCH#1. It did pass but I was wondering if anyone else had this concern. I forgot to mention it to the MO. I'm guessing that the chemo drugs are really getting out of my system now.
-
cmcclean: that is so cool about your son and the Shakespeare...little wee silver lining.
-
Hi Cmcclean
I'm getting ready for the great shave-off too! Shedding like a long-haired cat at the moment. Can't quite bring myself to do it, however. Clinging on to the last few days of my own hair.
Next week on, after Session two of my chemotherapy, I was told I would lose all my hair. It's only hair. It will grow back. I said I wasn't bothered about the prospect of losing it before it happened but...I am!
Ah well, time to introduce my new best friend - Macie - the wig that will be with me for the next year or so.
Hope you and all the other ladies reading this take heart and remember why we're doing this.
I am trying desperately hard to!
Warm wishes
Alice the Cat

Getting ready for the shave off here too. I'm at day 8 so I may have a few more days before it starts. But I ordered a cute wig (it's not here yet - let's hope it beats the shave off), and a couple of scarves and hats (they're not here yet either). Not terribly sad about the hair yet, but I think I may be when I actually see it leave
Trying to work and take care of the boys (one is a teenager - IMPOSSIBLE), and just live as normally as possible through this, although I don't even know what normal feels like anymore.
-
Jeanne - I just got roast, pasta salad and cookies delivered. So I guess that is my good thing of the day.
tc9876 - are you drinking enough? sure you don't have a UTI? any fever? I just ask because when I started running fever before I even started chemo, UTI was the first thing my MO nurse asked about.
Shera - awesome.
Did you ever get in touch w/your MO to find out what you were SUPPOSED to get?
Lana - as long as it is just your red counts you may be ok...
Corky - sorry your day was derailed with your daughter but what a good thing with your son!
Wigs - I am having more and more reservations about my wig. I have thin/flat hair and it is just so ridiculously thick and full that I think it really looks fake. I really need to get to a wig store to see what other options I may have.
I am really bored. I feel well enough that there are some things I could be doing around the house but all I managed to do was the clean the kitchen earlier and put a load of laundry on. The problem with being home everyday is that I figure I can always do it tomorrow.
-
Bored here too Karri. Shouldn't be. I have plenty of things I need to do.
-
Cmcclean- yes there is a fiddletown! We're in northern Cali surrounded by vineyards and wineries in the Sierra foothills. Truly worth a visit! Maybe if you hit it on a good day we can show you the sights. Doubt I'll have hair back by then though. That's awesome about you and your son. I've noticed that I'm having more conversations with my kids now that there's so much more "couch time". It's nice when we find the small blessings in all this huh? Glad you're feeling good today! Hope your daughter gets to feeling better!
-
My lucky delivery for the day is Mexican lasagna ! I think the guys are really enjoying this part of it!
-
Michelle - I know that my DH is loving it...I am a really picky eater and the first week I was so sick I didn't care anyway but he has pretty much eaten everything that everyone has brought. A lady that I know through the schools organized meals through the time school is out on Mon/Thurs through a site called takethemameal.com. She said it was really easy to set up. I cannot believe all the people that have signed up on there to send us food...such a kind gesture.
Lana, I have my stack of insurance paperwork/bills here and was planning on trying to get them organized...but have not managed to do so yet. I would prefer staying in a state of denial about all of it.
-
Karri - I got my wig at the Women's Center at a large hospital. The wig I ordered looked nothing like the wig I walked out in. They spent at least an hour customizing it and thinning it out for me. The problem with a lot of wigs is that there is so much hair that it looks fake. Mine is synthetic but looks so natural. See if you can find someone who can thin yours out. It can make a huge difference!
Also, I so relate to insurance issues. I really can't bear to even look at them anymore! For me, it's almost as bad as the Neulasta bone pain. Almost.....
Jeanne -
I've given up on the insurance/bills for awhile. Just can't think logically enough to focus on it.

How nice that you are getting sent meals in, that is so thoughful. I'm the cook in the family and alot of my friends were great through surgery for that. It really came in handy after my MX. I'm fine to cook now and just make extra on the weekend of my TX for the two days I'm really tired, normally day 3 and 4. DH will eat anything pretty much that's set in front of him. I normally cook for my elderly Mom too but my familty stepped up big time with that so that takes a load off me. DH is complaining though about gaining a bit of weight himself because of the carb loaded food I've been cooking of late LOL! I can't wait to lose the carbs once TX is over and get on to a better diet and lose all the white carbs. Need to shed a bit myself even before BC. Lucky though I've only gained like 2 pounds which is nothing at that was taken at todays weigh in. It can swing on a daily basis.
Wow, can you tell I've started me pre TX steroids today LOL!! Rambling!
-
Jeanne - I think I may take my freebie wig w/me when I go to the shop in town and see if they recommend anyone that can trim it. I don't really have a hairdresser and quite honestly I don't trust just anyone to do it.
MLB - lol...my DH will eat anything too. I am the cook here but I don't enjoy it! I think because I am so picky and I only cook what I will eat. However, since my parents have been here, my dad has been the one doing the majority of it. I haven't cooked in over a month! And yeah, that 10lbs I lost week when I had no appetite during chemo...well, the appetite is back. And people are bringing a lot of desserts. Yikes.
-
Karri - that is cool you are getting meals sent in! So far I've been eating pretty much what I did before so no major changes there, but I'm sure as this goes on it will change.
Raining here today and my sinuses are acting up - hope it is just a change in the weather thing and not really getting sick! that would suck!
I'm going out tomorrow night with some girlfriends and going to try a glass of wine, I doubt I will be able to taste it, but will be nice to socialize while I'm feeling good.
Hope everyone has a lovely evening!

Hi everyone, I thought I'd share this resource in case you haven't seen it. This consortium is a highly regarded source for treatment recommendations and they've prepared a booklet that provides a lot of useful information about the different treatment options available and why they are used in different situations.

According to this, Herceptin is typically given when HER2 positivity is high.
About low positivity being treated as negative, it's kind of at the discretion of the MO, but it's my understanding that it is in part due to the chance of the result being an error (there is a margin of error in every test which is why they sometimes retest or do a different test) and also that it's just so low the cells could act as negative. In something like 30% of BC patients, ER and/or PR status change over time as well. I have a very low positive PR score so my MO calls me essentially triple negative, but she's still giving me Tamoxifen for five years on the off chance my PR status allows it to help. I found a study at one point that found that people with my hormone status actually saw a better survival benefit from 5 years on Tamoxifen than other combinations, so I've decided to give it a shot. -
Hey there. Just had my bloodwork done before chemo #3 tomorrow. Everything was perfectly normal except iron...borderline anemic. Doc said that could explain fatigue...time for a big juicy steak!
My period started yesterday which I wasn't expecting. Doc said because I'm young it might stay thru chemo...its rare but possible.
Also...my nails have started to darken...and like MLB I was up two pounds at weigh in today. At least I have nice eyebrows!! -
Does anyone have the final decision on whether to take Claritin for the bone pain. I get my first one tomorrow and just don't know what to do. Also I was given different answers as when to take the extra nausea meds- one nurse only if I really start to need it and the other said to take it right away no matter how I feel. Any thoughts or comments?? I know you all are way ahead of me in this fun journey.
Thanks for any help:)))))) -
January - my opinion is stay ahead of the nausea - I took Zofran whether I needed it or not for a week. I didn't take it round the clock as far as I didn't take it if I woke up in the middle of the night but I pretty much took it in the morning and then 8 hours later. My nurse said the Claritin can't hurt - take it today and then for about 5 days after. The ones I got at least are 24 hour.
Love - hope you get that steak!
I just got off the phone with the lady who does art classes here in town that can accomodate a group of girls for my DD's "friend" party. She can do a class next week (which should be my last good week until next TX) and is coming up with a design they each get to paint on a canvas to take home - so relieved to have this done, she really wanted to do this. Just 4 friends, her and probably little sister. This is really her "big gift" as far as from us to her.
-
Hey January. I would take the claritan...day before, day of and a few days after. If you still feel pain then get some painkillers!
I only take the nausea pills if I start to feel off but I haven't had any real issues. Im sure you will get a feel for how much you need them. -
Januaryice
I took 24 hour Clariton TX#2 and am also taking it this time around, TX#3 is tomorrow so I started taking it today. It worked for really well for me is all I can say. TX#1 for be was brutal, major back spasms that were only releived by copious amounts of percocet.
Regarding the anti nausea meds. Besides the steroids, I take Ondansetetron (sorry don't know the Trade name) as directed for 3 days whether I feel nauseaus or not. I then have Stimental as a back up if I need it. So far so good, I've been really lucky in the nausea department and haven't had to take the latter. Were you just precribed one? My nurse says its easier to stay ahead of the nausea rather that rein it in later. One of the big reasons is deydration from continued vomiting if you get a really good dose of it. Totally worked for me.
-
Masserz - can't get the link to work - it comes up but won't click through?
MLB - that big long old "O...." name is generic for Zofran, lol. I got that, Compazine, and Phenagren and DH had to go and write the brand names on top so that we would remember what was what. I have read that Zofran is the best as far as lasting the longest (every 8 hrs) and being strongest...I would think think Compazine is next and to me Phenagran to me is only useful if you want your a$$ knocked out - it has antihistimine properties and just makes you sleep - or it does for me.
-
kltb04
LOL! Thanks for the name. I had to grab the bottle and type out the name. I think the pharmacist did that first TX but I've thrown out the bottle.
-
I took the clariton and didn't have any bone pain. I also took the nausea meds for 4 days just as a precaution. Took it when I got up and then 8 hours later. I just didn't want to feel sick so I took it as the nurse told me. I still carry it in my purse in case it hits while I'm at work.
-
Thanks for the imput and I just took a zofran. Stomach just does not feel right and all I had was chicken soup with a little rice in it. I did eat some prunes before dinner as I'm worried about the (other end
not working haha going to take the Claritin tomorrow as stomach is not ready for it tonight.
Thanks....this site has been a lifesaver!!!!!!. -
Karri That sounds like a great friend party, nicely done.
I also feel like I'm possibly packing on pounds...I don't own a scale, so I won't know until #2, but for sure everything I may have lost in my first two weeks, I am making up for now...
-
januaryice; i swear by the claritin- i took it first round but only for 5 days and had major pain on about day 7--so i have been taking it for 7 days the remaining tx's. just my opinion!
about the anti-nausea--i was only taking as needed but have been using more compazine this time =thinking it would counteractthe shakies i get from the decadron (forgetting the decadron is also for anti nausea-duh!!!!!!!) so now i am just soooooooooooooooooooo sleepy and cannot get to sleep!!!!!!
on a positive; i have my job interview on monday -and i need to brush up on my keyboarding skills between now and then! i don't "type" but i get around well enough! i do have the keyboarding pro class still loaded on my computer from my class last year- will work with it this weekend! it's just so much easier my way!
thinking of you all!
-
Margo good luck on the interview!
-
Margo- happy dance for the interview. Did they agree to the early release on Fridays?
