I did a whole lot of nothing yesterday.
I feel a bit energetic today though. Already hung out some laundry, and will go out for lunch soon.
It's a beautiful day, and this afternoon I'd like to go outside for a walk.
-
I did nothing today, but did go to the gym yesterday and used machines for upper and lower body workout. I was pleased that I did, but can't say I felt anything extra from it. In fact I came home and fell asleep a couple of hours. Today, feeling tired but I could have/should have pushed myself to at least go for a walk. There's still time, but don't think it will happen.
Myleftboob and mine too lol. Of course, packing and moving boxes count.
I would like to try yoga, but I am so inflexible.
-
Myleftboob I wonder if Gilda's Place would be similar to your Wellness Centre. I know they offer all kinds of seminars and support classes and I believe knitting. I will have to check if they offer yoga.
-
Just got in from a good 45 minute walk, about 2K I would guess. Went with a neighbor and her dog. Took me an hour last time so that's encouraging. Had my asessment done yesterday at the Wellness Centre too. I start Tuesday. The PT said that it's set up for 10 - 12 people at a time and it's similar to a Curves routine and your progress is monitored. Its for 10 weeks in total, which I think will give me a good springboard into a fitness routine (considering I haven't had one for a long while). She also said that most are in varying stages of the hair issue which makes it alot more comfortable for me anyway, along with the social aspect as well. So I think if I walk most days, attend this program 2X a week and fit in some yoga, I'm going to feel so much better!!
-
MLB: that sounds like a great plan!!
-
I am day 7 after TCH#2 (of 6). I went to the gym today for the first time after 2nd infusion. I didn't want to go and my little workout was not noteworthy. However, I am still glad that I went as I do feel better. I'm sure that tomorrow will be better and that I will work out a little harder. Sometimes, the mind has to get moving before the body does. So, even if you don't want to walk or exercise, do a little anyway. Your brain just has to take the first step. The body will catch up.
-
Did abs and lower body work out yesterday. Cleaned some stalls as well. I really need to step up the cardio while I can. So the plan for today is abs, upperbody and treadmill. Although my daughter is sick (fever) and in front room with the treadmill and my DH won't let me in there! Maybe I will try the Kinects MyShape program. Does anyone else have that? Heck, even the My Sports I think can be played over 2 systems and might be a fun way to encourage each other.

Okay, did the Kinects MyShape yesterday with the kids. What fun! It also has some low key Tai Chi and Yoga routines for the hard fatigue days, so I think I will try to stick with it as part of my routine.
-
I was thinking of ordering the new beachbody tai cheng program for the days I didn't have enough energy, but haven't done it yet. I know I can always do yoga, and not sure I REALLY need yet another workout DVD!
Hope everyone drinks their water and moves thier bods!
-
Claire, my mom was part of a study on exercise and chemo, back when she went through it. This was at the U of Copenhagen. The study concluded that exercise helps counteract fatigue and other SEs from chemo.
-
I did nothing active on this cold gray rainy day. Even the dog walks were extra short.
I can't seem to get into a routine. Do you all have set times when you work out? I"m not a morning person, and since I'm only working sporadically during chemo, I don't have that to go by. I usually workout after work -- in my pre-BC life.
-
my problem is that during this week when I feel like myself and have good happy energy, I am just so enjoying doing all the normal house/kids stuff (not quite enough good energy to work, sadly), that I haven't done any proper exercising at all. Bad. I'll try to do some good long walks on the weekend before round 2 on Tuesday...
-
Shera, I typically work out on my lunch breaks from work. This works out well for me as I can't seem to find the desire early in the morning and after work, the to do list is very long (cook dinner, take son to his numerous events or help with homework). However, I can understand it being more difficult when not working. When I was on disability after my surgey, I just dragged myself around. Set a time for yourself (like an appt) and go. If you don't feel like going, just tell yourself to go & walk for 10 minutes. Once you're there, you'll probably want to do more.
-
Thanks Momine. That was very interesting. I will look it up. But really, only in the last year or so that exercise is recommended for those who can do it. It's foul and rainy here in Seattle, but will need to get out later anyway. It may be a walk though as ankle is still hurting.
One other thing. Was in NYC a week ago on a mix of business and pleasure. One of my old colleagues/friend said "look at that body!" when we got up after our brunch. The general consensus was no one couldn't believe how amazing I look these days.
I am saying this as think helpful to give everyone a glimpse of a future where they are past the hammering and on to a new and great part of life. And yes, you can look hot post treatment.
I need to get moving as have work that I need to get out. Project where something went wrong, but I could not have known that. So a redo of about one third. YIKES. I need to do this today.
Anyway, to the extent that you can move, you will feel better. And just think how easy once the hammering is over??? In fact, the only downside of exercise is that clothes look fab, so more tempting than usual.
One thing I will say too is that make sure you do arm exercises regularly. I didn't have my weights available, so by day 4 or so of no arm exercises, things were getting a bit stiff on the surgery side. I did weights/crunches as soon as I got home, and all was well. - Claire

Shera I hear you! I have felt the same way this past week. I did go to the gym today and was happy that I worked out with weight machines upper and lower body. I am struggling with cardio but was able to do some quick walking on treadmill. The problem is that it is too sporatic. I need to push myself there more. I was not in the right mindset this past week, although physically I was capable. I think TC has the right idea about setting a time-making it an appointment. Do you have any dvd's you could do at home when you don't feel like going out? I'm laughing to myself because I have accumulated quite a few DVD's over the years, and I did not pull one out this past week. Oh well, today is another day - maybe I will dust them off for those days I don't feel like or can't get myself to the gym. We can do this!!!
-
Claire, I think they only published the results about a year ago, so that makes sense. My Greek docs were at first sort of taken aback that I walked as much as I did during chemo. Here people, including many docs, are still of the mindset that you should take it easy anytime you have anything wrong with you. Then they saw that I was doing quite well compared to their other patients and now several of them have come around.
-
Hi back Momine! Very interesting. Anna Schwartz put it this way. The change in attitude will be similar to recommendations given cardiac patients. 50 years ago, they were told to take it easy. Now, we understand that this will weaken the heart muscle even further.
The best survey of the benefits of exercise are to be found in the MacMillan survey published in August of last year. This stresses exercising during treatment as well as afterwards. In observational studies, exercise has proven to be even more important than diet in long term survival.
I am walking today, as windy out (fortunately not rainy!!) and I don't yet feel secure on my injured ankle.
Even in Seattle where the whole culture is about activity, I am a legend in oncology circles. I was so atypical that the pictures of me cycling etc while on chemo were important. I was an outlier, and the proof that my clinical nurse wasn't making this stuff up, were in the photographs of me doing things like cycling events. - Claire
-
Claire, that makes sense about the comparison to heart disease. After trying to read and figure out how I can prevent recurrence, I have also concluded that exercise is clearly one factor in the equation.
-
I'm on a roll, two days in a row. I got a good upper body workout and a partial lower body. I felt good about exercising today but I had to push much harder than yesterday! I think I would be feeling much more encouraged about the exercise part if I could see some results!
-
Ok Finally! A good long walk in the misty rain, and square while waiting for the cookies to bake! Woohoo.
-
Tx2 Day 15. Sorry, I haven't been on the thread for a while. How's everyone doing?
This morning I got up and did a 20 minute dance routine before starting my day. Had a lot of fun shaking my booty.
Feels so good to have some energy and motivation.
-
Gorgeous day here! Going for a walk on the boardwalk on the beach, enjoy the wind in (what's left of) my hair one last time, maybe even get to a trot today, feeling good! Tomorrow tx2, so I know this is my last bit of juice for a while.
-
...AND vaccuumed the whole house. A good day-before-chemo activity, I thought.
-
KatyCB good thinking! Hope everything went well today.
-
Thanks Brax: I feel better at this point than I did the last time. Feeling a little steroid buzzy, and no major headache like last time. plan to buzz the hair tonight.
-
Yay to those who were able to get out and do something today. Keep trying to those who didn't quite make it.
I couldn't get to the gym today but i did jump on my rebounder and hula hooped for a few minutes. I read somewhere that it was good for whitlling the waist so I bought a water-filled one from Toys R Us and hula'd. I don't know if it works but I feel like I've done something when it's over.
I WILL go to the gym tomorrow.
-
Oh forgot about hula hooping! I have a weighted one that is really good - need to get that out of the closet and use it!
-
Lovely walk in the park with hubby. Ball cap to hide my patchiness. Happy. Day 2tx2 is so much better than last time.
-
Just walked for about an hour and half. Up hills and flats. Wasn't sure I could do it given my current chemo exhaustion (I haven't been doing much, in general, in last few years) but my "base" pulled me through (30 hard years of exercise).
Now, what to do about sweat and wig wearing?? It's only going to get hotter here and I'm worried. Even at a crisp 45 degrees, I was sweating a bit. Any ideas?
-
Kam - the sweating and wig thing is worrying me also! It is already 85 here today. It was a bit cooler than the other day now that I did the big shave, but I wore it early in the morning before it was really hot. I am really thinking I will only be wearing the wig to work and special outings. Otherwise I think I will sport the halo and a baseball hat or a cotton scarf. I am going "topless" right now at home and it feels nice!
I have been slacking on the exercise front, really need to get back into it, I feel better when I move!
