Hi Bern-
When you mentioned your daughter's early experience with cancer, my heart just went out to you. I'm soooooo glad she's doing well now.
And, Deborah- you're the science whiz here... have you or anyone else heard about the new metabolite profiling to determine whether or not your breast ca will reoccur? It (supposedly) has better accuracy than either the oncotype or the mammaprint. Here's the main article, although, you can find many articles on it if you google it: http://cancerres.aacrjournals.org/content/70/21/8309.short
Hey, I have to say....lately, I'm actually giving my brain rests from this BR CA crap...today, I think I went about 3-4 hours without even thinking about my breast or BR CA. It was nice...life actually is starting to seem more normal again....but....of course, I haven't started on the HT yet....and I haven't gotten any pumps in my breast yet...so that'll be fun!
-
Cajmi,
Did you read the Tamox vs. AI vs. BC recurrence vs. overall survivability study that DebbieOS drew to our attention? What was your take on it? You may not be interested if you don't have HT on your horizon. I believe you find fascination, too with the science part of BC? Because as we Fab Febbie Females well know there pretty much isn't anything else redeeming about this goat rodeo!
Diximine30- Awwwww- you have a 9 mos. old grand baby! How delightful. Dont' let that kid become collateral damage in any of your wandering foob adventures. Dont' let your grand kid anywhere near you with a magnet! It could be an industrial accident waiting to happen.
I wish I was a science whiz. I just have a tremendous science curiosity. All my time and energy is spent on just getting myself to and from work and resuming my exercise routine.
Happy slumbers and comfy sleeping positions.

Hi Feb. Ladies,
I am getting my port placed in my chest today. All my scans are done but I do not know the results yet. My chemo is scheduled to start next Wed., April 4. My MO did not recommend the oncotype test for me since it was in my lymph nodes and she said I would definitely need chemo. I am also waiting for the BRCA 1 & 2 test results. My RO does also want me to have rads, but I am not 100% on board with that yet. I was told before my BMX that if I did that I would not need rads, but if they found it in my nodes I would need chemo. Now they tell me that premenopausal women can benefit from rads in addition to chemo. They changed up the rules on me! With my having TE's andalso the risk of lymphedema, I am very afraid of rads. My PS wants to do the exchange before rads, but my RO says to do it with the TE's still in there! Don't you all feel like there are too many decisions on this journey?!
-
mcm24- i was told if i got a BMX i would not need rads too. But they changed their minds with me too. They said it was mainly to do with my lymph nodes being involved. I was not to happy about it but what can you do. I am also starting chemo i am getting a picc line on Sunday. I start around same time as you.

Hi Ladies,
I feel as though I am so far behind in this process while I am still waiting on my onco score. Your post have been very helpful of what to expect. I just wish I could add some helpful info myself. It feels like my life is on hold and I truly lack Patience in that area. I was wondering how many smokers are in this group, if any. I was told to try by the end of the summer to get counseling about quitting and not stress over it now because my body is already handling enough, I don't need to add any more stress to myself. I thought there was a smoking tread on here but I didn't find it. I am glad to hear there as been alot of good news and sorry to hear of the unexpected news.
Diximine30...I am soooo glad you got to REALLY hold your grandbaby. I was there in the room for the birth of all of mine except the last one (he came early, little stinker)..such a cherished moment.
Best to all...hoping everyone feels better today then yesterday!
-
Bern25, There is a stop smoking support thread on here because I've seen it. Sometimes if I can't find a thread, it will turn up on Google. Maybe put stop smoking and breast cancer in the search? Not being able to find a thread, even when I know the name, is the only frustrating thing about this site. I hate the 'guess the forum' game.
-
wrenn44...thanks I will give it a try. I did find an interesting quote in my search though...I am sure many have seen it already but my daughter and I decided to make it frameable an hung it on my fridge as my "refridgerator art" for the day...
"Depression is not a sign of weakness. It's a sign you've been strong for too long."
I've been feeling a little low today but maybe I just need a rest from all this for the day...not sure if anyone else has had one of them days, but this may help...darn onco score waiting...lol
-
wrenn44...great advice...found the tread.........thanks!!!!!!!!
-
Bern25, I know how you feel. I was supposed to get my onco results tomorrow but now the lab said they won't be ready till next week. My doctor changed my appt. till next Friday! Hurry and wait again! Just wondering how many of us who got mammograms every year have been told that the cancer has probably been there for 5-7 years? That's what I was told. I guess because I have dense breasts. (Well, make that breast!) In other words if you have dense breasts, mammograms are useless. At least that's what I get from it. Our insurance pays for useless tests every year. It would have been nice to catch it sooner like before it went to my lymph node.
mcm24, how are you doing? Did you get the port today? Please let us know!
-
Here you go Bern! http://community.breastcancer.org/forum/6/topic/727307?page=230#idx_6899
I don't know how to make it a direct link. Sorry about that!
-
Galsal...thanks...I appriciate that a bunch!!!
-
Hello, all. Just checking in. I know my situation is different than most of yours--I've already had chemo before the BMX on 2/6. I'm already in rads and on hormone therapy. I'm still trying to heal from skin necrosis on my prophylactic side.
-
Woo Hoo! I just went and bought a bra and prosthesis! I look totally normal in clothes again. It's pretty exciting for me. I'm back to my receptionist gig tomorrow, and I'll be happy to look like my old self in public.
-
Hi Beth -- That's curel and unusual punishment...they will never get you out of the shower when they ever let you in :-) WOOT!!...YAY for good bones and lungs, that is so awesome!! Yes, my sweet grandson was very healing for me...I'm so sore but it was totally worth it :-)
Nel - Prayers for "a walk on the beach" and that June comes quickly for you. You are so strong and I a so honored to know you. Thank God for you girls....seriously!!
Galsal - Me too....3 of my drain sites are still giving me fits. UGH!! If you figure out how to make them better, fill me in please!!!
-
They phoned me from the hospital today to talk about picc line etc.. they told me that they prefer you do not shower when you have a picc line if you do you have to be super careful not to get it wet. UNBELIEVABLE!!! I will definately be one of the ones struggling on a regular basis to have a shower. I refuse to go a total of 6 months spongebathing and half bath and half showering this is insane. I am sure i will be getting sick soon from improper cleaning of myself.
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Sorry just needed to vent
-
Debbie -- I'm having longer periods of feeling normal too...nice and scary all at the same time. You'll ROCK the fills!!...and I'll be right here cheering you on along the way.
Deborah - I am totally an industrial accident waiting to happen....these TE certainly aren't Dixie-proof....hahahahaha!! I don't mind being lopsided, who wants to be perfect anyway!!
mcm - really irks me when they change the rules....grrrrrrr. As if we haven't been blindsided enough!!! Here for ya, sister.....anytime.
Bern -- I'll be your STOP sister too!! I quit smoking January 25, just one tiny week before surgery. I've walked a mile in your shoes....and if I can do, you sure can too!!!!!!!
Wren -- WOOT!! Looking normal leads to feeling normal. Have a great day back at work!!
Yes, my grandson is God's greatest gift, he's perfect...really wish I had had him first :-) It was very HEALING to be able to really hold him this weekend. I'm so sore from all the wiggling (like holding a wet fish) but it was completely worth it!! I wish i could share his smile with each and every one of you :-)
If I missed responding to any one of you individually know that I pray daily for you all and that you've each made my life better. Love & Hugs!!
-
Beth -- holy smokes!!! Vent away...if anyone has a right, it's you. I'd be willing to bet your cleaner than most on any given day.....but it still really sucks. I'm so sorry....
-
Dixieminemine30...my birthday is Jan 25th...maybe that is a great omen...maybe I will be able to actually quit!
-
You can do it Bern!!! Jan 25th is also my anniversary....yet another connection for us, a happy day. I can pm you my cell number if you want....you can text me when you need a "no smoking" boost. I won't lie to you, it is seriously hard but I know you can do it.
-
Beth, Have they never heard of big plastic adhesive patches? The kind they put over your IV? I would be in their office on the floor sobbing to get a shower. I really feel for you. Vent all you want--you have every right!
-
mma59,
I am one of the lucky ones, who have had a mammogram every year. Last October I went in for my yrly mammo on a new digital machine and there they found microcalcification in the left breast. I would never have felt this as a lump. I too have very dense breasts but luckily this was picked up on the mammogram. After a sentinel node biopsy it showed DCIS, grade 3. Since then I had 2 lumpectomys trying to get clean margin without luck. Feb 23 had a uniMX. Fortunately for me no lymph node involvement. So YES I would tell eveyone regardless of breast density to continue to have yearly mammograms, it very well may have saved my life.
-
Beth...when my daughter had her broviac put in (which was 2 ports hanging out of her chest, she was 5 then) we covered it with a tegaderm patch. She was on chemo for a yr. She was a VERY active 5yr old and got messy with the best of them. She would shower and bath, hell we would even hang an IV bag on the hook in the car on the way to the shore if she needed meds, unhook her, slap that patch on her and hit the beach. So long as we cleaned the area and put a fresh patch on after the activity she was fine. I would confirm with your doctor that maybe you just need to use caution after the actuall placement then protect it like you would if you were wearing a cast in the shower. Hoping for the best.
-
Good morining All,
Beth, Really they can not reasonably expect you to go that long without showering. That seems unhealthy in and of itself. I would just call and ask/demand for alternatives. My approach would be reasonable calm, but no this is not acceptable so how are we going to make it so I can shower. I still don't understand the differences between MD's. Mine was OK with me showering the day after MX and with the drains in. The world did not come to an end. Good lord don't we have enough to deal with.
Wren, good for you. I haven't taken the time to do that yet. Still have the movable foob. I forget who had the velcro idea. but thank you.Great idea. I had soemone tell me yesterday that they couldn't even tell when they looked at me. REALLY,people are looking with that thought. STOP IT PEOPLE. And this is a woman, bright, typically very senstive to things. UGH
If folks aren't aware some YMCA , maybe other places as well, have a LIVESTRONG program for folks dealing with cancer. At my Y it is free, 12 weeks, twice a week with folks trained specifically in this program and working with individuals dealing with cancer. You need a Doc's OK. Check you local Y. I am going to begin the program here in Southeastern Mass next week. I'lllet folks know how it goes.
Gentle day to all We are doing great.

Well Ladies my number is in..............I got a 10! she said something about it peaking at a 15 but still way below the chemo factor. She said I still show very high levels of estrogen so I am going with the Ovaries to come out. This will happen soon, I see the Gyn on the 6th for a consult. I hope I am doing the right thing....the ovaries will be out on the 10th if all goes well....ugggh...now the panic.
-
The port surgery went ok. But the pain meds made me sick, so after I finally got to eat some crackers and ginger ale, it came back up. I woke up in the night (after sleeping in the lazy boy again, back to that!) and was able to eat a banana popsicle and animal crackers. That stayed down too. I didn't go to work today because I was still kind of shaky and just needed to rest. Supposedly I can't drive for 2-3 days. It's 2:00 p.m. and I am still in my jammies!! Oh hell, who cares. Screw this cancer crap!
-
janiceg415, I also went every year and I was trying to say that if we have dense breasts, they should do an ultrasound instead of mammogram. I also will continue to go but don't know if mammograms will show anything since it didn't show until it was 1.5 cm and in the sentinel node this time. Can't help but wonder if I would have had an ultrasound in previous years, maybe it would have been found before it spread to the node.
Bern25, congratulations on the low score!!!! Very happy for you!
mcm24, stay in those jammies!!! Hope you are feeling better!
Wishing all Feb. girls a good day tomorrow!
-
BERN....doing the happy dance for you over here! You go girl! I'm sure you said why they want the ovaries out but I just can't recall right now. Go with your gut...quit the monkey of smoking!
Saw the Breast Clinic today. All looks well, although the skin parts that were saved flop over enough that it's hard to keep them dry in there. When at home, am going around au naturelle with pieces of kineso tape holding them open (tape is from OT to do this).
I will say the NP spoke glowingly about the Partner of the PS team that would work on me. He's the one with the microvascual training and experience of the two on the team. They've put a note in to have the Partner meet with me also at the next PS appt on 4/11. Makes me feels a lot better!
mma, feel better!
Nel - what time of day are you Y classes btw? The one near me has that program, as I've just looked it up to check.
-
mcm24...I stayed in my jammies all day too...I was busy with tracking records and calling docs but I was nice and comfy.
Galsal...I am doing the happy dance...my MO said that my ER+ was high and so are my estrogen levels still. Tamoxifen is not something I wanted anyway so the ovaries coming out kills two birds with one stone, ovarian cancer and my main estrogen supply. If I were in my 30's or below I would have maybe said Tamox but since I am so close to menopause anyway why take it. I have read a lot of good things about Femura and others like it with their own SE's but I don't want the worry of these estrogen seeking cells making a home in my ovaries. I hope they don't find another place but with the main supply gone it is the theory that they will die on their own.....ugggh...who knows. One step at a time. Then comes all the other horror stories but tonight I celebrate...prayer of thanks...and see past the onco score......now smoking is going to be a tough one but I am cutting back...I am going to start working on the SE's now by eating more of the foods for healing and exercising for relaxation and meditation....
Best to all! Hoping you feel better today then yesterday!
-
Ahhh....I hear you about the ER+ being high but I'm not high on Estrogen itself although not in menopause just yet. Will see the Gyn on the 19th to discuss her wanting the ovaries out at the very least, if not total hysterectomy.
Onc didn't realize that if she wants me to have the Brca testing, she needs to order it. Breast Clinic isn't going to do it since by their outlook, I don't meet eligibility. So it won't be quick before there's an answer on that one. Needed though, as part of the decision to remove part or all.
Today BS said "you won't have to worry about cancer any more". Wow, seriously? Responded that it will always be in the back of my mind.
-
Galsal,
The Y I am going to has daytime and evening, Two of the smaller Y's a bit further away only offer during the day. I am going to go in the evening , with work and all it is the best time for me.
Best
Nel
