Path results

Hi Ladies,

Unfortunately (no offend) have to say, I joined the club.

Had a lumpectomy due to initial diagnosis of 0.5 cm IDC, pathology came back  - it's 1.5 cm ILC with a second distant focus (1mm). God knows why the diagnosis changed and what it means. Lymph nodes negative.

Heared ILC is less agressive, any truth in that?

Got my path saying:

Invasive lobular carcinoma. Adjucent foci of lobular carcinoma in situ and cancerization of ducts

No tumor is seen in the margins. Small focus of lobular hyperplasia/ lobular carcinoma in situ is

seen in the upper surgical margins.

Any idea what's that with the ducts cancerization? And the upper margin? The BS said not to worry about the margin but I was too surprised by the ILC to ask...

Huge warm virtual hugs to all of you...

    hi

sorry you had to join us... I am not sure what "cancerization of the ducts" means.  I have heard that ILC is more slow growing, which makes it less agressive... down side-- it is often caught later..... usually see it at stage 2--still very treatable, etc.

It is a small one-- and no nodes--so this is all good news. I am sure someone will come along who will know more about the path report than me.....

ILC tends to be nonaggressive, but the irregular shape makes it harder to spot. Mine was found on mammo, but was thought to be a small 8mm until biopsy showed ILC and more like 2.5cm. I have more than one tumor, also, which was found in the first MRI, then confirmed to be ILC in a second MRI-guided biopsy. I started on an anti estrogen, and it will be more than 6 weeks from  DX to surgery (an anniversary trip planned), so the BS was not overly concerned about the ILC growing horribly in the meantime.

No nodes is good for you and they seemed to have removed the tumor and gotten clear margins, if I understand the report correctly. The upper margins may refer to part of what was removed, and they removed beyond that to get a clear margin. Check with your doctor to get this cleared up in your mind.

FYI, Size isn't so much the issue with ILC but the type of the tumor is (as with all tumors). Are you ER/PR positive or negative? HER positive or negative? This depends on the hormonal therapy you would need now that your cancer has been removed.
