I had a bilateral mx after dcis diagnosis as I didn't want to mess with it later on.  I'm coming up on 5 years post dx, should I have an MRI just to make sure everything is clear before celebrating my 5 year mark or am I clear and shouldn't worry about it? I have not had any scans or anything since my mx. Thank you

I'm in the same boat... I will be scheduling an MRI sometime this year (5 years as of Jan!).. but that is more to make sure the impants are still intacted I don't imagine that's necessary with a DIEP...  they do get an image of the tissue around the area but there really isn't enough breast tissue left to expect to see anything relative to bc... I say celebrate the 5 year  mark and move on!!!!  That's what I intend to do!!!!  Congratulations!!!

I just hit the 5 year mark myself.  I went for my annual checkup w/my surgeon and he broke off our relationship, lol!  Says he doesn't want to see me anymore Smile  I had a BMX and implants.  I haven't done an MRI either.  Just doesn't seem necessary to me at this point unless I suspected rupture or something else...I'm just supposed to continue w/monthly exams - checking scar line etc. and call if I see something amiss - w/implants under the muscle the pecs are right under the skin, so any remaining tissue is at the surface.  My surgeon said the risk of local recurrence (which is what you look for w/DCIS) is at it's highest (but still very low after MX) for the first 2 years then drops off.  He also told me in his 15 years he's never had a *local* recurrence after MX with the exception of one IBC patient.

Celebrate your 5 year mark regardless of what you decide on the MRI - it's a happy milestone!
