"Now scientists say vaccines could hold the key." This sounds very hopeful!!  The article in the Dec. 19, 2011 edition of Newsweek magazine discusses the effective results of vaccines on different types of cancer including breast cancer.  It cites the specific case of a Stage IV breast cancer patient on a trial who is now NED...among others.

    Sounds promising, but I would like some numbers.   To say "21 women are doing very well" isn't very scientific.   But sounds promising based on the woman that they profile.

    All the recent cancer vaccine news is thrilling - thanks for posting! Ihave to say though, I don't really understand this metaphor in the article:

    "The most direct route to that, studies suggest, is by injecting the very same molecules, called antigens, that stud the surface of cancer cells much like Lady Gaga's hats."

    A little strange, no? Maybe just me...

    No, it's not just you, Blue Cowgirl.  When I read the article it seemed like a real non sequitur...as if Lady Gaga wears hats attached all over her body....

    Interesting article and good news for those battling cancer.  Naturally it would be given to prostate cancer patients first (men) who also got viagra to perk up their sex life..and...paid for by insurance.

    All that aside, I think it is quite interesting that this vaccine is working to boost the immune system so that it can kill off the cancer cells.  This is the same treatment I am discussing with my integrative physician to preven a recurrance of my cancer.  Of course, we could never recognize a natural alternative treatment for cancer that works on the same premise, so let's call it a vaccine instead.

    You gotta love these guys, but whatever, if it is successful in saving lives, bring it on.

    Kara - Maybe you should have read the timeline more carefully.

    "In May 2006, she traveled to the University of Washington. The vaccine was injected into her upper arm; she got five more shots over the next five months."..."In 2010, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first-ever tumor vaccine, called Provenge, to treat prostate cancer." So it appears she must have been a participant in a clinical trial some 4 years before the approval of a similar drug for men.

    I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, am now 3 years post-op, but have progressed to advanced prostate cancer. I don't resent that Breast Cancer gets a disproportionate share of research dollars (y'all have a very effective lobby). But I truly believe we are all in this together, and I cheer on any discovery and every advance against any form of the disease. Let's all cheer on any cancer vaccines, and win this fight together!
