What doctors do you follow up with now?

I go to my oncologist every three months right now.  And my radiation oncologist has me following up with him and he said something about wanting a mammogram done.  I said I did that through my regular oncologist and he said ok, but it made me wonder.   Who is suppose to be my long term care person?  I dont' know why I need to see the radiologist anymore.     I have missed appointments to see him the last two weeks, because I've gone back to school and I just keep forgeting with so much going on.

But in the past few weeks I've seen my oncologist, had a mammogram, mri to make sure a spot was ok, brain mri because I've had ear fluttering for months, ct scan last night because I had terrible pain in my ribs and went to the er.  Seems to be a sprain.   The ct scan showed some abnormal uptake in my spleen, so now I have to go see about that.  I just think I'll call and say  - I'll call and make an appointment after I'm done with all this stuff and things are settled down?!?

Polamom it's different for everyone. In my case:

1st year see Onc & BS alternating every 6 months (basically see someone every 3 months)
After 1st year see BS & Onc every year ( basically see 1 of them every 6 months) I think this is for 3 or 5  years. I do believe I see my BS for life. (Do note that most people see their oncs more often the first 3 years but don't see their BS like I do. This is the way it's done where I'm treated).

I will see my PS I believe yearly once I'm done. I don't get mammos anymore because I have no breasts just boobie prizes

See my LE MD once a year

Still see my GP and Gyn once a year

I didn't do rads so I don't know what the follow up is with that.

BTW I will get another liver scan but I think this is the last one. They thought they might be issues but so far no, just benign cysts.

Hello. I agree everyone is different. I am almost 7 years out from treatment. I see the oncologist yearly. She orders my mammogram and prescribes Anastrazole. Initially I also saw the surgeon once a year, mainly because the oncologist wanted me to. But the surgeon told me I could stop seeing her a couple of years ago (unless I have a problem of course) and the oncologist is aware of that.

I only see the gynecologist ever 2 years or so, since I had a hysterectomy before B.C. I see my G.P. yearly and he is great at keeping all my concerns in focus and giving me good general advice.

polamom - I have to agree with the other ladies in that treatment can vary depending on where you live.  I saw my RO once after finishing rads and that was for a so-called "skin check."  That was a cover his ass visit since he would not let me use any creams at all and I ended up with a bad topical infection.  I see my MO every 6 months and he orders my mammos once a year - does not think I need more than that.  Haven't seen my surgeon in quite a while and don't plan on it in the future.,  Don't get me wrong, my surgeon was amazing but life goes on and he has others that need him more than I do.  So my doctor schedule is this;  MO 2 times a year, mammo once a year, gyn once a year and primary doctor every 3 months for "routine maintenance" for cholestrol and high blood pressure.  Have been seeing a pain management specialist  - seems I ended up with permanent nerve damage from rads and trying to get that under control.  I do believe that some are being overtreated.  I am more than comfortable with the follow up schedule I have.  Other tests, scans, etc can always be added if there is a need.

polamom--I say my RO for a three month post rads follow up and he had me do a mammo the week before I was to see him.  At that point he released me to my MO.  I see my MO every three months for two years.  If all is well it will change to every 6 months for the next three years then go to yearly. My MO orders all my blood work, mammo, mri's whatever I  need.  I don't see my BS any longer but I am getting ready to have a BMX and will then have follow ups with my PS.  From what I understand once the process is finished I will see him yearly.  I also see my GYNO yearly and my PCP yearly unless I get sick and need to go in to see him.

Should I be concerned that I don't see my ONC for 7 months  PFC, and the BS said to make an appt in a year?  I didn't have radiation, and I had a left mastectomy.  I only see my PCP if I make an appt. As I am TN there are no other treatments. I feel like it just ended and now what do I do?

Lynnmaine I'm on the same schedule. I do see my PCP once a year because I make the appointment… and so should you. I also see my gyno once a year as well.

I think the only reason why our BS & onc sees us once a year is to check the scars for any recurrence. Other than that what can they tell us when the see us. Unless we have some symptom there is no reason for them to do anything else. I'm glad I don't have to see my once every 3 months. I want to get on with my life already.

If you have any unexplained pain, rash etc that goes on for more than 2-4 weeks be sure to tell both your PCP and your onc.

Hi, It mas been nearly 6 years for me. I see my medical oncologist every 6 months and prescribes the arimidex for me. I see the breast surgeon once a year. I do not see the radiation oncologist anymore..she felt seeing the other two docs are enough.  I have a physical once a year with my PCP, I have a cardiologist that I see every 18 months.

     Have a great day!

I'm on about the same "minimal" schedule as jo955 is, now that I passed two years:  MO, every six mos., mammo once a year, and GYN once a year (he monitors my uterine lining while I am on Tamox.)   Before that I saw the MO about every 3-4 mos. and also saw the BS a few times, but considering my Dx, it really felt like TMD (too many doctors) for me.  I do the SBE monthly.

I'm almost five years out (next week is my anniversary) and I see my PCP every few months.  She orders bloodwork and does exams every six months.  I have mammograms once a year.  Since I don't take Arimidex or Tamoxifen I don't see a medical oncologist anymore.  Haven't seen the radiation oncologist in over four years.  For the first two years I also saw the surgeon every six months.  I had a small Stage I tumor.

    Hi ladies

I am 12 years out and now see my GP once a years for a mamo and ultrasound.

Once treatment was finished I didn't see my oncologist again.

My follow up was with my surgeon every 3 months for the first 2 years.  Then the appointments moved to 6 months for 2 more years then annually.  In the last few visits with surgeon we basically just caught up on the events of the year.

Now just the GP I could continue to visit my surgeon but opted for the GP instead.

I'm just reaching my 5-year mark. For the first 3 years, I saw my BS once a year (she also ordered my mammograms) and my med onco twice a year. Those appointments were staggered so I saw one or the other every 3-4 months. After 2 years, the intervals between appointments were lengthened to 6 months and alternated between the two docs, so that I saw each one of them just once a year. They work at the same cancer center and share labs and med records, so they both suggested that schedule. Oh, and once a year I went to an endocrinologist who specializes in osteoporosis. She ordered my DEXA scans. Now that I'm at 5 years, I will be seeing my BS just one last time unless I want to participate in the center's "Survivor's Clinic" for rechecks. I'd like to do that, but the care is provided by Physician's Assistants and Nurse Practitioners; and my health plan won't cover them. I'm pretty sure my med onco will still be seeing me once a year, and my BS said my med onco could order my mammograms if I wanted to continue to have them there. Through all of this, I see a PCP twice a year for all the other stuff. He's clueless when it comes to cancer care, though.
