Taxol Chemotherapy

KCD, I'm on week 9 of 18 weeks Taxol and still running. Some days are (much) harder than others but I still do have good runs. I find I run for longer now as I need a good 45-60 mins just to properly get going. When it gets really tough I switch to walking until I feel I can run again (usually when uphill). Sometimes I run for up to 90 mins but afterwards I need to recuperate by lying down and sometimes sleeping. I also get very cold very quickly after running so I change out of my running clothes and have a hot shower as soon as I get home. Actually for me, when I'm running it's the only time I feel like I'm on chemo. I'm determined to keep going as I think it's helping me manage the side-effects. Good luck!
-
I gotta say I'm really, really impressed by those of you running while getting chemo. Have any of you who are actively exercising through chemo developed any neuropathy? (still lurking, waiting for final onc visit to determine if I will get chemo or not)
-
I happily happened upon this board, and just registered so I can contribute. I just last week finished an ACT regimen to treat a BC recurrence. Worked throughout, horrible AC side-effects, not too bad with the Taxol. Except yesterday I was horrified when I discovered how much I now weigh!! I am fairly active with exercise, etc, or at least try to be. I furiously searched the web to understand if the weight gain was a Taxol side effect and learned that between that and the steroid, it certainly can be. Hair starting to grow back - I look like some kind of white dandelion at this point. Eyebrows/lashes are spotty. Nails very painful. Certainly understand that I need to be healthy and pray that I don't get this yet a third time, but the vanity part is difficult also - I really don't want to LOOK sick. I really appreciate reading about everyone else's experiences with these drugs and side effects; helps a lot.
-
dancetrainer, I haven't yet, its still early though. I am taking Glutamine, B6 and L-Acetyl Carnitine (with my Onc's blessing) to try and help prevent neuropathy.
-
Anko66, its TAKING me longer to get my miles in...I'm not necessarily feeling good enough to run longer, but my mile time has stretched out!
-
Thanks KCD. Taking notes...just in case! Thanks to all on this thread for sharing your experiences.

Hello Ladies. I just finished my final Taxol. I've been waiting patiently for this final week to get over. And here it is at last! It's been a wild journey with 4 A/Cs and 4 Taxols :-).
I must say that this has been the best group ever...the information available here is priceless! All of you have been really helpful throughout this journey of mine by sharing all your experiences. Thanks so much for all the help.
I'm not sure if any of you are planning to get a genetic test to check for BRCA1 & BRCA2 mutation. Please let me know if you plan to do that to find out about the reoccurrence of BC.
I also collected a few samples of the infected tissue (on slides) just in case I may need to do any tests on it in the future. I'm planning to move to Toronto for a while and I shall keep you posted if I do any tests on the tissue and/or if I do the genetic tests.Stay strong my dear friends. Bye for now.

Of course this is old news for most of you on this thread, but for anyone new, the main Breastcancer.org site has a wealth of information about Taxol and other medications, and their potential side effects. And of course, you have the insights and personal experiences of so many who post here!

First Taxol tomorrow - nervous...
Jenn -
good luck Jenn- you will be fine! Promise!
-
Taxol's not too bad Jennt28...things are going to be good. Not to worry.
-
I agree. I'm going in for 8 out of 12 Taxol/Herceptin today. I've had very minimal SE. You'll do great! It is soooooooo much better than the AC!
-
Good luck Jenn!

Curlymommy--congratulations! All of us know what a milestone that is! Yay!
Jenn--don't worry too much about Taxol. I've found that I didn't lose my nails because I iced both hands and feet through each tx, no neuropathy thanks to the ladies here on bc.org who shared the info about l-glutamine, carnitine and B complex, AND my hair started growing back after tx#8.
I did have to delay one tx because my WBC fell too low for tx, but since then I've been getting 2-3 neupogen shots between my weekly tx and yesterday my WBC was at a whopping 10.5!
I hiked 2-3 miles right after each Taxol tx, if that gives you an idea of how I felt.
I've a got a bit of chemo brain. I had taped a tv program to watch and yesterday instead of playing it, I deleted it, like a dumb-*ss.. Really, the spaced-out forgetful behavior seems to be the biggest by-product of Taxol. I teach at the university level, so I can really call myself the absent-minded professor, now.
I have one more tx to go, 6 days from now. Start tamoxifen on April fool's day, there's some poetic justice in that--and got scanned and planned for 6.5 weeks of rads, which start 4/11.
I got five pin-prick tatts all around my boob. I'm telling everyone they are tatts of Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars and Jupiter--as seen by God

Jenn-- Its alright to be nervous-- to be expected. When or if at times, it becomes overwhelming, take slow deep breaths. Maybe a mantra of some sort would help as you breath. Don't run away from it all, face your fears-- because that will make you stronger-- but don't build them up or ruminate on things that have not yet happened, may not happened, have happened in the past. Try to stay present and in the present. It will make each moment you have more enjoyable.
It is a practice-- so practice. and it will get more useful as time goes one. hugs-- Quaatsi

Thanks everyone! It's 4am here and I'm awake. Since I'm off to work until 2pm when I leave to go to my cancer centre for my tx it's going to be a long day!
I have permission to take vit B, LCarnitine and LGlutamine. My chemo brain from FEC has made me forget whre to look up the dosages and frequency (my MO doesn't know and doesn't care). Can anyone point me at the correct page or a link?

I was so nervous first taxol, but they give you a lot of bennedryl and other things and will relax you almost to a nap. They watch over you carefully the first one and you will see it will be fine. I did not ice my fingernails and I had DD taxol and did not lose any nails, taxatore is a little rougher on nails. I used gloves to clean and do dishes and put tea tree oil ointment a few times a week on finger and toenails. I wore crocs shoes the whole time and it saved me from stubbing my toes many times and keep finger nails shorter to keep from knocking them. -
My centre has the frozen gloves and socks and they have them in the freezer waiting for me :-)
Can't really wear my old crocs to my corporate work office ;-) My comfy flats will have to do...

I go for Taxol # 9 tomorrow and my hair is starting to grow back. So excited to be almost done...the side effects i had were severe muscle pain on occasion but really the last two treatments made me tired too. I slept 8 hours yesterday...guess i needed it. It is so much better then AC for sure! No nail issues....and I didn't ice them. My nails seem harder then ever! I am starting to get happy feet to start dancing as the end nears......3weeks/4treatments.
Best to everyone -
Has anyone had issues with elevated liver enzymes on taxol ? My levels were normal the day I started chemo, then 3wks later the results shot really high... AST 175 and ALT 371. They are having me repeat bloodwork but said they don't think its related to chemo. How can it not be??
I am on weekly taxol plus herceptin.
Thanks
-
KCD
Yes my liver enzymes shot up also, I just started drinking a lot more and they came back down. I was reading the sheet on taxol they gave me at the beginning and it said something about liver enzymes going up. I should have read the paper before I took it better, now I'm finished and checking if I got all the SE. -
Flislander, thanks, how long did it take your numbers to come back down? I drink 3 to 4 liters of water daily as it is, but I plan on increasing that now.
-
Jenn--I was nervous about all of it. The benadryl does relax you and it goes okay.
Everyone who exercises---were all of you active before your treatments? I am trying to walk each day but get so out of breath that I cannot do much. My ankles have been swelling a lot too. Do you have someone who works out with you or have you motivated yourselves? I have neuropathy in my fingers and feet. Do your expanders interfere with your workouts. I seem to be the poster child for everything that can go wrong. I had a fill yesterday and I hurt so bad today. It hurts down my left side and I have shooting pains behind the expander. I am going over to the TE pain board for help with that one. I really need to know about the fatigue and the exercise. Also swollen ankles----Help me please. I really want to be in my "new state of normal!"
-
Try putting lemon or lime in water, I drink celestial season fruit zinger tea with lime or lemon also drink something b4 coffee in morning, just drank a lot. I think it is SE from taxol. Mine came down at next 2 week checkup
-
Hi there,
I'm pretty sure that drinking water, while a healthy thing to be doing, does not have any significant effect on liver function. Avoiding foods and drinks that overwork your liver would probably be more helpful ie: avoid alchohol and fatty foods.

Beth 77-I hear what you say about the TE....I have a lot of pinching pain now that I am almost full. I think it catches on tissue....very stabbing like at times. I had 100cc last time due to my strange circumstances. my muscles really hurt after a fill....only a little more to go. May 8 th is my exchange and a TRAM to re-reconstruct the other side. Fun days ahead!

First Taxol and Herceptin done! 11 more to go...
Arrived at 2.30pm and finally left at 6.30pm. We were the last there!
My port is definitely fixed after it not working for my last FEC and having to have it "draino'd". The Taxol run was ok but I did get a really strong abdominal cramp about 1/2 way through so they got me a heat pack and stopped the infusion for 10mins. Apart from that no other effects during :-). Before they ran the T and H they gave me oral Kytril and an antihistamine ranitadine (Zantac). Then iv dex and iv ranitadine.
During the Herceptin I got quite nauseous so hey ran some iv maxalon, but still felt blah all the way home. Came home, ate FOUR pieces of pizza and feel asleep before 8.30pm.
It's 2am and I'm awake - but no ther SEs as yet.
Jenn -
Jennt23 - Yeah for getting the first TH under your belt! I had my 8/12 yesterday. The weeks seem to just fly by...It'll be over b/4 you know it!
-
Just noticed this read in active topics and had a brief read. I just wanted to tell you that I found the 12 weeks of taxol a breeze.
I didn't get any SE until about week 6, then I noticed MILD bone pain on day 3 but well controlled with over the counter analgesia.
I did get numb finger tips and sore feet but soon went once I finished. My only issue with taxol was that my big toe nails lifted and I ended up with an infection under one, I didn't ice my nails - fingernails were fine.
The best thing about taxol was no nausea and my hair started growing back, so by the end of taxol I had a good inch of thick fluffy hair, but it did do a number on my eyebrows ans lashes.
Hang in there girls and don't believe taxol causes everybody Major SE, I found it easy and managed to work and exercise through it.

Bonseye only 3 more!!! Yay
I have just 4 more, this week #8 seems to have more SE for me. I've dealt with a slight ringing in my ears on day 2, my nails are bending and very bumpy looking, restless legs the night of, the tingling feeling in my hands and feet haven't gone away yet! I have been taking carnitine and B complex, wondering if I should take something else.? Other than these minimal SE I am doing good, and with this beautiful weather we're having I am getting my walks in!
Happy St Patrick's day to all!
Cyndi
