I have been viewing this sight for a couple of weeks now and have found it very useful. Background: My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 39 (not sure what kind), died five years later at 44. I was just diagnosed with DCIS in practically all ducts on both sides. I just got my BRCA results and have tested positive for muted BRCA1. The surgeon and oncologist both are recommending a double mastectomy because they cannot do a lumpectomy. This is scheduled for March 27th with immediate reconstruction. (scared to death).

My sister who is 39 just went and got her mammo and MRI and they found very dense tissue with active firbosis in her right breast. They initially told her they would repeat the MRI in 6 months. Last night they called her back and said they had a meeting over her MRI and because the tissue is so dense they said they wouldn't even be able to tell if there was cancer there. So they are suggesting a double mastectomy and also have her tested for the BRCA1 gene.

I am BRCA1 positive. My initial diagnosis of IDC was last June at age 48. We caught it early enough to have a lumpectomy. I will have alternating mammos and MRI's for the rest of my life. If I start to have multiple problems and concerns - I will cut those girls off in a heartbeat. Good luck on your BMX.

Recovering from the BMX sucks but you will know that you and your sister won't have to worry about going through the waiting and the worrying every six months. I had grade 3 DCIS all over my right and the path also showed LCIS. I could have done a large lumpectomy, but I never want to go through that again. All the biopsies and waiting and calls... That practically drove me nuts.

So here i am, no boobs, but in a better place mentally. The new, healthy (fake), perkier boobs will be here after a few months and I think I'm more sane for that. There could be a lot worse than a MX... So I'm seconding ladyboss with the getting rid of the twins!

Good luck to both of you. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to PM me...

How are you doing now, ladyboss 1977?  My cancer sounds a lot like yours. Had lumpectomy end of Feb. 2012, haven't started rads. yet cause trying to decide if dbl. mast. is the route to go with my BRCA 1 positive status. Concerned about reocurrence but also leary of a major surgery with reconstruction. Lumpectomy with rad. seems easier. I am getting a second opinion since the oncologist recommend the bilateral mast. Either procedure, I will have hormone pills but no chemo. Anybody out there have feedback for me. I am 67.                                                                          Diagnosis: 2/12 IDC, 2.1 cm. Stage IIA, Grade 3, O/2 nodes, ER/PR+ Her2-, BRCA  I positive.

Ladyboss - I forgot to ask - did you have radiation after your lumpectomy? Did you do any chemo.? Are you taking any hormone pills?   I hope you are doing well!
