STILL WORRIED ABOUT POSSIBLE IBC
Ladies
I have posted my story before and some of you have kindly posted replies about cellulitis and lymphedema. I am still having concerns about my breast so want to re-post with an update looking for any other advice.
I completed active treatment of lumpectomy, chemo and rads for ILC stage 2a in July 11. My breast has been somewhat swollen and firm since radiation which my BS, RO and MO all indicated was not unusual.
In November a red rash appeared under the surface of the skin on the radiated breast. I went to the ER and my breast was examined by three ER doctors, then GP, with referrals to and examinations also by BS and RO. I also had an ultrasound and blood tests when at the ER. I was not given a defininitive diagnosis but was treated with antibiotics as a possible case of cellulitis and the redness etc cleared within about 4 days.
All was fine when my MO examined me in January.
In February, I noticed what may have been the start of another flare-up, though very mild. I did some breast massage and it went away.
A week ago, a similar rash appeared. I started taking antibiotics and saw my GP twice during the week. The rash has now faded and is 90% gone but some small lumpy spots, possibly accumulated lymph, persist on the lower half of the breast. I do not have any fever or pain.
I am planning to make another appointment with my BS this week. I know I can ask for a biopsy or MRI but in the meantime I would like to know if you think this could be IBC or what else could it be since it is becoming recurrent.
Thanks for any replies but in responding please try not to scare me too much!

I have had cellulitis 2 times and went to a lymphedema specialists in Pittsburgh. My lumpy areas are fibrous from chronic swelling and infection. Apparently swelling and infection change the tissue composition.
I'll say a prayer that is what yours is. Glad that you are getting it checked out though.

Thank you for your prayer ma. I pray for you often.

Racy u'r doing all the right things, I've had my breasts removed but I do get rashes under my arms (where the skin is)?? Mine so far are yeast infections???? go figure--so I guess some rashes still come around. Good Luck

Thanks Racy.

Sounds the most like cellulitis &/or lymphedema. I don't think IBC doesn't come & go. Sounds like you are doing all the right things as stated above. Having a MRI could be an option to rule out IBC or any other issues it might be.
Sending prayers & love NJ

Thank you for the prayers. I will do the same for you.
I have made an appointment with my BS but can't see him till 23rd as he is away this week. I will see my GP on Wednesday. I also emailed a breast specialist nurse at the hospital.
The rash is 99% gone today but the worry is not! -
Racy,
A family doctor can do a punch bx. That way you would have the results back before you see your BS. Family doctor sometimes have to be talked into things, but you can do it.

Ladies, just an update. I saw my GP today and had a breast examination. All was fine and the redness is gone. I will see the surgeon next week. I got another prescription for antibiotics to keep on hand in case needed.
I am feeling less worried. I'll update again. -
Hi. I am not diagnossed yet. I hope I am not overstepping my bounds but I dont know who else to talk with. I just had a mamo (came back normal, which I expected as IBC doesnt show up on it), and an ultrasound of my nipple, as that was bothering me too. Ultrasound came back normal. While I had these tests done, of course, I had no rash at all on my breasts. Exactly one week after all my testing, up spouts a rash. It seems to be above my breast, right above it but I also see a very light pinkish shade that is on the inside right of my breast. My husband says I am looking for discoloration to get hysterical about, but I dont know how a rash could just develop overnight while I feel discomfort in my breast. I dont dare diagnose myself, and have an apt. with a breast surgeon on Friday. What can I do with myself until then? You women are all so strong and wise, and I am freaking out with no one to talk to. My breast does not feel hot, nor is it swollen. Please help. Or if I should be posting elsewhere, let me know that too. I thank you.

Hi Rebecca, you are welcome to post here. Were your mammo and ultrasound routine or did you have symptoms before?
It is good that you had those tests and will see a surgeon in two days. I understand the worry but I can't tell you a way to alleviate it that will definitely work. Some would advise keep busy, deep breathing, think positively! And try to stay off the Internet. All easier said than done I know!
Your symptom seems isolated given that you have no discernable lumps, swelling, pain or itching. Continue to watch to see if the rash spreads. You could maybe apply a soothing cream.
When you see the surgeon try to get a definite diagnosis of the cause. It's not good enough for him/her to say they don't know what it is. Take your husband or a close relative or friend with you to the appointment if you feel you need support.
It's not too long till Friday. Hoping the cause is totally benign. Rmember, IBC is rare. -
Thank you for your patience. Yes, I did have these symptoms before the two tests, except for the rash above my breast. I guess I need to just wait and see, not diagnose myself, and hope for the best. Completely, and utterly terrified, but I guess fear and worry will not change the outcome. I have put some ointment on it and it seems to take away the redness. I thank you for your replies and will update tomorrow.
