Hi

What vitamins are you taking to help with BC recurrence? I have a list of them but wanted to see if I have any that should be on the list.  I have heard that mushrooms are a must?  Anyone know about mushrooms and how to take them or if this is in vitamin form?

The three properties I've read about mushrooms in the breast cancer context are:

     1) Immune enhancing properties (various mushrooms have this purported property, but maitake d extract seems to have the best research behind it.  The ultimate influence of them is not fully proven, nor is the dosage)

    2) Some unknown direct anti cancer property, such as inducing apoptosis (programmed cell death). Perhaps maitake d again.

    3) aromatase inhibition properties: This would be of value to post menopausal ER+ diagnosis.  Apparently plain grocery store variety white button mushrooms have some AI properties.

All of this unfortunately is not proven to a scientifically conclusive standard, such as double blind clinical trials.  Maitake D extract may reach this level of research, as phase I dosage trials have been conducted and shown immune modulating properties.  Apparently the dosage related effects are quite complex, with various indicators of the immune system being both enhanced and depressed depending on the dosage.

Barbiecorn:  mushrooms come in vitamin form - my combo includes bio cordyceps, reishi, chaga (I believe there's a whole thread on this one) and poria cocos

Here's my basic protocol: fish oil (not the synthetic vit D), Caproil (coconut oil), MultiMax Immune, extra Vits C8, E8, cal/mag, selenium and magnesium chloride, Vit K, blend of mushrooms, boswelia for pain, different blends of enzymes (vege source only) including papaya, bromelain and charcoal, Q10, apple pectin, chorella for detox, wheatgrass, holy basil, EstroSmart (DIM), whey + lactoferrin, krill for asthazantin, probiotics, Kyolic, red yeast rice, Greens in powder form, ashwagandaa nd triphala also in powder form, astragalus and fermented kombucha in liquid form, herbal teas, lots of kefir and dairy from goat, milk, cheese and yogourt.

Easy does it:  I add all the above to a glass of kefir (except the liquid caps) Yum

This is a work in progress and much more research to do.  Next shopping spree: grapeseed extract and high dose turmeric

I add herbs and spices to everything. I seldom eat meat, but eat small fish only a few times a week. Lots of grains, seeds and beans. Juicing not so much, I don't like throwing out all that fiber, got myself the Vitamix, what a treat !

I really really have to work on moving the body parts, too much computer time

I'm still on the hunt for local chaga (Birch conk).  I'd like to try making the tea or alcohol extract.

Wow Maud...I can't believe you do all that...how did you come up with all of this...none of this bothers your stomach....I have such a sensitive stomach...went to holistic dr. last week who wants me to juice which I tried and cannot do too much of...makes me sick and I am losing weight rapidly which is making me weak...what do you eat in the way of food besides a little fish...this dr. said no dairy at all and wants me to take shots of wheatgrass...I wouldn't mind putting some wheatgrass powder in something?  Just sounds too extreme for my stomach...when I say I have a bad stomach, I mean a bad stomach...how did you get used to all of this Maud???

Well, first I started reading what other BC sisters were taking and I found that a lot of what I listed was common, i.e. vit D, fish oil, DIM, multivit, etc..  Then I started researching nutrients for cancer and came up with the above.  By emptying the caps into kefir (kefir coats the stomach) all the powders mix in very well.  It's still tasty and much much easier on the stomach than if I were to swallow the caps.  I eat my dairy mostly from goat because of the following:

American Association for Cancer Research: High Cysteine Levels Linked to Lower Rates of Breast Cancer
    http://www.prweb.com/releases/2003/10/prweb85015.htm

The inhibitory effect of Cysteine on breast cancer appears to be related to its unique and critical role in controlling the body's production of Glutathione. Glutathione is commonly referred to as the body's "master antioxidant". Glutathione is responsible for numerous immune system defense and repair functions and is an effective anti-aging substance.

Like I said, I eat lots of grains, beans, nuts and seeds, fruits, veges, really a whole variety of healthy food.  Probiotics and digestive enzymes would be very helpful if you have digestive problems.

    Hope this helps
