Any March 2012 RADS out there?
Anyone want to join me as I start radiation on March 12?

Hi Mary, thanks for starting the March '12 thread!
Here's some helpful info for you (and others that will soon be joining) from the main Breastcancer.org site on Radiation Therapy, including types of radiation therapy, what to expect, and how to manage side effects.
Hope you find this helpful!

Just to tell you a little bit about myself...I was diagnosed in August 2011 with ILC with lymph node involvement. I had neo-adjuvant chemo (A/C followed by Taxol). I had a BMX (no recon) and AND on February 6, 2012. I had my radiation planning session yesterday. I don't know much about radiation yet or what I'm getting except that I think it involves four fields to get all of the lymph node areas. It's supposed to be the "easiest" part of my treatment, but after everything else, I'm assuming I'll have some fatigue as I'm going into this post-chemo and BMX. However, I seem to have weathered those things pretty well so maybe my luck will hold during radiation. I hope we can exchange tips and pointers on skin care, side effects and the like for the next 6-8 weeks.

Begin on Monday, March 7th. 4 weeks and 1 day total.
-
I technically had my first treatment on 2/29, but I will consider myself part of the March group. 3 down, 27-ish more to go!
-
Thanks Mary for starting this group. Begin on Monday, March 5th. I am glad chemo's over and moving onto rads! March Madness begins!
-
I started late Feb (first one Feb 28) but most of mine will be in March, so here I am! After today, 20 more to go.
So far I haven't had too many SE's but a few zings now and then.
-
I guess I am really going to be an April Rad but I go for my radiation planning on March 19 -- CT scan, tattoo and planning. Once I have my CT scan then I will know whether I will have 16 or 25 sessions. Don't know what to expect -- one more step ....
-
My last chemo was Feb. 16 and rads begin March 20. I was tattooed last Thursday but wanted to wait for rads to begin til after spring break. I'll go in for the verification March 19. I was told I'd have 33 treatments. My RO nurse recommended Lanolin from the first treatment on. She said to put it on in the morning and at night after bath/shower. She suggested to wear a t-shirt or undershirt to keep it from staining your clothes. She also suggested to go bra-less from the beginning of treatments also. We'll see about that!!!
I'm doing really well after chemo but still get tired pretty easily, especially after each day of teaching 2nd graders. My heartburn and funny tastes in my mouth are about gone but I have a bit of neuropathy in fingers and toes. That can be really annoying. Soometimes it's hard to pick up things or grip. Good luck to you. I'll try to tune in often.

Moonlight,
What do you mean by a few zings? Just curious.

HI Ladies,
I had my initial consult with my RO (who I LOVE) a couple of weeks ago - I was just 2 weeks out of surgery, and she ordered a mammo propr to starting rads (she wanted to be sure there are no more calcifications lurking, though I'm not clear why exactly). Mammo is scheduled for this Thursday, so I expect that when she gets the all-clear on that, I will be called in for my CT and simulation. I have my no-metal deodorant and "recommended" skin cream standing by and am ready to get started!

hi all
i start my first day of radiation in about 14 hrs. i still feel the bee sting sensations every now and then, so i hope radiation won't make it feel worse. after 3 surgeries, my severed nerves are still searching for each other as my rad onc likes to tell me. i've had a few friends ask if i am ready for treatments to begin. i gotta be and i am ready. i still forget my new little tattoo freckles are not eye liner liquid that may have spilled. good luck to those starting rads this month!
-
Had my 2nd treatment today. My RO doesn't want to tattoo until my 3rd session. I don't know why but I have been anxious through both treatments,,,maybe the noise from the machine reminds me of an MRI. I hate having an MRI!!

Hello Ladies
I had my markings done today and start treatment on Thursday. They told me not to put anything on the skin till towards the end, and only aloe vera gel? Yeah, and I like the no bra thing, yeah right. Have you every seen a 38DD walking around without a bra...not a pretty picture. I would be the talk of the town as I went everyday to drop off and pick up my 1st grader from school.
I am shopping for a good fitting sports bra. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. In the meantime, I took out the underwires out of my older bras and have used those.
-
Isn't it interesting how ROs seem to have such different opinions... Mine told me to start applying skin cream twice a day from the start. She recommended either Vitamin E oil and pure aloe vera gel, or a cold cream-type product called Colonial Dames, which is a vitamin E cream enriched with aloe. I bought all three.
Califgirl, I like your idea of removing the underwires from older bras - will definitely give that a try. I am not a huge fan of sports bras, as I'm small-breasted and they smoosh me flat. I've read good things about the Coobie bra and am thinking of ordering one to try.
-
I bought a sports bra - front closure from walmart -- good price but like MizMarie said they just smoosh you -- I haven't started radiation yet so not sure how it will be --
I like the suggestion that I read about wearing the shelf bra cammie inside out -- that might work for me.

Mary, thanks for starting this group. It was just what I was looking for. I got such support through chemo by joining the December 2011 T/C group.
I had my last chemo infusion on 2/21 and yesterday met with my RO and had the CT scan, positioning and tattooing. (That's enough to convince me that I will never get a full tattoo!)
I've volunteered to participate in a clinical trial testing whether a shortened course of full-breast irradiation with the boost spread out over the shortened course will have just as good results as the normal course of 25 or so treatments, plus 5 days of boosts at the end. In the random trial, half the women will receive the usual 31 treatments, and half will have 15 treatments over 3 weeks, with the boost added to each of the 15 treatments. The trial is for women of a certain age, with tumors of a certain size and grade and with some node involvement.
I thought that just the chance of shortening my rads was worth signing up.
I won't know if I'm accepted into the trial for a week or so. Regardless, treatments would start soon after that.
So far I haven't been told to use any creams before treatment. And I'll look for some option other than sports bras. Like Joanne and MizMarie, sports bras make me look flat. I'm already bald, so with a sports bra, people would definitely be calling me 'Sir." Interested to hear other options.

Hi, I am new to this forum, but I started my radiation therapy mid Feb and will end around end of March, so I guess I qualify for this forum. I am more than half way through. I am getting 25 regular and 5 boosters, so a total of 30. It seems that I am getting less than most people. Not sure why. So far I am doing fairly well, no burns, no fatigue. They gave me this gel/cream called Radiaderm and I have been using this religiously every day since day one. The Radiation Center gave me samples at my first consultation and I bought them online on CVS. I am praying that I will stay well until the end. 8 more to go plus the 5 boosters.
-
Simulation is scheduled for March 19..6 weeks rads to follow.
-
Califgirl -- Look into the Coobie. Comfy, but some support too. I"m 36D, and the "one size" is on the small side, but I've been using the "plus size" during rads.
-
I go for my CT scan, tattoo and simulation, planning, etc. on March 19th -- question ... what do they do at the simulation?
-
Joanne,
Don't know if it's the same in Canada as in US, but my first visit was CT scan, some Sharpie marks, and one little tattoo dot and making a mold for head and arms to be sure you are in the exact same position for each treatment (about 30 minutes long in "active" time, almost all with arms overhead); second visit was for a new set of Sharpie marks (my center doesn't use tattoos) and x-rays to be sure they were on target (about 15 minutes active time), then treatment started the next day. They cover the Sharpie marks with some clear tape, but they don't cover all of it, so wear something that you won't be concerned about if the extra ink comes off on it, or bring some wipes to try to get the ink off before you get dressed.
-
My RO recommended Colonial Dames cream as well. I put it on at morning and again after treatment. I've had 5 treatments so far, and no major side effects yet, maybe a little itching. I didn't get any recommendations for bras, so I'll just switch to my sports bra if my skin gets too tender, or go braless altogether. This is one of the few times I'm glad that I'm smaller chested!
-
Hello...may I join? I've had my initial consultation, and I go for the simulation and plan next week (the 14th). Hopefully I start the actual rads shortly thereafter so I can "git her done!" I was DX in December, had my lumpectomy on January 19th...breezed through that with no problems. My oncotype score is 9 so no chemo for me (YAY!). I haven't decided what I'll be wearing through this. I guess I'll just have to experiment to see what works best. I have some sports bras but as someone said earlier, they really "smoosh" you flat...and I'm a small B (I'd be an A 1/2 if there was such a thing!). I haven't been able to find any shelf-bra camis in the stores that I can try on. I could order on line but it's a hassle if they don't fit or are uncomfortable. I guess going braless is always an option for me as well since I'm retired and don't have to dress professionally. I'm going to ask my RO for a recommendation for creams, etc.
-
crking71, I see that you are in Eugene - I live in Springfield. Do you have Dr. Gemmell as your RO?
-
MizMarie, Wow, small world! Dr Gemmel is my RO. She is awesome! Dr Stanton did my lumpectomy, and he referred me to her. We are in good hands here in the Eugene/Springfield area!
-
Dr. Stanton also did my surgery, and almost everybody I know who had radiation has had Dr. Gemmell. Isn't it great to have such first-rate doctors and facilities right where we live? I feel badly for those ladies who have to drive or fly great distances just to get good medical care.
Off to get that dreaded mammogram this morning. I'm taking a couple of Aleve ahead of time so I hopefully can function afterwards.
-
where can you get Colonial Dames. My RO told me to use Aquafor once a day for the first week and then go to applying it 2x a day in week 2. Its just a big greasy mess. There has to be something better....
-
I bought mine at a local/regional chain store, but you can buy directly from their website. colonialdames.com It's a bit sticky thanks to the aloe, but it absorbs nicely.
-
Mary, Thanks again for starting this thread.
I had partial mastectomy in December for DCIS. We had a Mexico vacation planned for early February, so I had my first treatment on 2/29. My RO is awesome and saw no prob with waiting until after vacation. I asked about the shorter (Canadian) schedule, and she was okay with that, but said the longer schedule had slightly better cosmetic results due to smaller doses. So I am going that route.
Seven down and 26 to go. My RO recommends Miaderm, and I am applying it three times a day. Once in the morning after showering, once after treatment, and once before bedtime. So far, no SE but I am still early in the series.
-
lioness1111 -- what did you meant by the shorter (Canadian) schedule.
I start on April 10th - for 16 or 25 - depending on results of my CTscan.
