That is AWESOME Brenda!!! Thanks for responding.  Will your doctor keep you on it for much longer?

Wishing you continued success with your treatment.

Didn't work at all for me.  I was on for about 2.5 months, but ended with progression in liver, pleura and bones.

Linda - Sorry - my reply sounded sorta' harsh...I should add that we're all totally different and you'll get loads of more positive replies.  I did great on other treatments, Xeloda just wasn't effective for some reason.

    Hugs to you,

I've been on Xeloda since August 2010 and NED for more than a year! I blew through several chemos and hormonals in my first 3 years, but X is working great. I hope to be one it for YEARS. My onc recently allowed me to switch to a week on, week off and the SEs are already better.

    Good luck to you.

Nancy H:  No problem.  I am a realist.  I like for people to tell it like it is :)

Here's hoping it works for me and that your current treatment works well for you!

I took Xeloda for 3 cycles. PET scan showed mixed response...some spots better, some worse. Because of progression my onc took me off of it.

I jqve been on Xeloda for just about a year now. It is working pretty well for me, keeping liver mets stable

I was on and off of it (took breaks) for over 3 years.  It worked well for me.

I have been on Xeloda since Abraxane failed in October 2011 after only 2 cycles.  I am 7 days on 7 days off.  I also do Avastin.  The Avastin likes me and the combination has my TM's dropping so I anticipate I will continue with this regimen - scans of 1/30/2012 show a significant reduction of things overall from the 10/11/2011 scans.  Oh, I have new spots and old spots are gone, lots of reduction and some progression in a couple of areas - taking into consideration the August 'explosion or micro burst' of cells in my abdominal cavity - X is working to bring things under control.

I'm so glad I saw this thread. I was going to start one asking the same question.  I've been on Xeloda for 8 months now and will get scan results this week to see if it's still working.  While I know there is no guarantee, it is so awesome to read that people can be on this for years!  :)))

I was on Xloda almost a year - 4 months with Ixempra and 6  months alone.  No definite pregression, just cancer cells in fluid around lungs so Dr stopped me.   He was concerned about increasing neurapathy and hand and foot syndrome.  Also have enlarged spleen but onc not concerned about that.

There is a woman on the UK boards I go to who is called the Xeloda Queen. She has been on it for over 5 years (I have it in my head that its 8 1/2 but that seems incredible!)

If it was effective, how long did it take to see the positive results?

Soleil -- for me, I saw improvement at the first scans.  Usually we do them every 3 months, but he checked after only 2 when I started....I guess to make sure it was working.  And it was!!!

Did 3 cycles and CT showed progression.

Yes, Laurie, the Xeloda Queen has done 8 1/2 years and is still NED!!! Hope the same will be true for all those of you who are getting a good response. :o)

I was on it for almost exactly one year, in combination with tykerb.  Had a bit of progression, so the doc switched me recently - it was a good year!   Best to you - SUE

Good to hear all the long term successes with xeloda. I have been on it almost a year. Started tykerb along with it a couple months ago since the discovery of one very small brain met. Tykerb passes the blood brain barrier better than xeloda or herceptin. 17 months of taxol kept bone and liver mets at bay. Xeloda worked even better since in the beginning it was actually shrinking stuff...FYI to those new on it...don't get too discouraged with side effects. I couldn't tolerate it at all in the beginning...nausea, severe diarrhea. Switched from two weeks on and a week off to a week on and a week off and also lowered the dose....quite tolerable now.

I'm in my second month.  One more month to go until my scans.  I have considered asking for scans this month, but if it takes three months to actually work, I may not be giving it a fair chance.

I am feeling more pressure in my liver, I think it may be the xeloda working in there.  Then again, it may be the mets growing.   Not sure what to do.  This is my first actual chemo.  I was on hormones for 9 months.  I'm able to function, work and get around on the xeloda.  This may not be possible on some of the other chemos.  I'm afraid.  If my scans show that there is more cancer progression I may be pulling the plug on the xeloda too soon.  Maybe it would begin to work this week and i'd have signed onto another treatment.

    Does this make any sense?

Thanks to all for responding.  I was just thinking about this thread on my drive home from the doctor... I was thinking of posting it again since I didn't get very much of a response.  So it was a pleasant surprise when I got on the boards today!! Good to hear all of the different responses.  I pretty much wanted to know if it was like Tamoxifen and Aromasin where we hope to get a good 5 years out of it (though that didn't happen for me).  I think I'm more afraid that it's just a short term treatment on the way to something else...

Anyway...... Have a great day!  And for those starting Spring Break soon.... Woo-Hoo!!!!!!! Enjoy!!

My wife has been on Xeloda for almost 2yrs now, its been a great drug.  Her markers have gone up the last two months and its time for her PET/CT on Monday.  We're been dealing with the worst scanxiety yet (given rising markers) but hopefully we'll be able to continue on X.

There's a pretty active Xeloda thread that might be helpful for you http://community.breastcancer.org/forum/8/topic/772113?page=104#post_3609469

Tamoxifen failed me too, so I understand your grief. From what I have read, Xeloda seems to be a very effective treatment.

One year exactly. Then, progression in the liver caused a switch to Tamoxifen.

    Good luck!
