I am always so right on things! I am having PBMX tomorrow! I was diagnosed with LCIS in July and have spent all this time, doing research, talking to people, spoke with my breast surgeon, spoke with an oncologist, spoke with a plastic surgeon, took in and sorted all the information and made the decision that this course of action is the best for me. Once I made the decision it all sort of fell very quickly into place and now here we are with surgery tomorrow! I am sort of glad that it did come about so quickly as I have really had no time to really worry about it. I am not, at least for now, having any sort of recontstruction...I am not totally closing the door on that option, but I do not consider it a priority at this point. Over the past 6 months or so this site has been such a great source of information, kindness and support. I don't post much (sort of a lurker by nature) but I have benifitted greatly from the wisdom and experience I have found here. So as most of you have gone before me....wish me luck, send up a prayer and I will see you all on the other side!

Maryellen, good luck tomorrow! Wishing you a peaceful recovery.
I am on day 4 after bmx and have stopped taking the pain meds. I am taking ibuprofen and it is tolerable so far. The only issue I have had since stopping pain meds is that I am nt sleeping well. I see others are having the same issue. I was also up at 3am, thank goodness for Netflix.
I am hoping to have hubby wash npmy hair today. He is nervous to do it over the sink, but I think I have convinced him. I know it will make me feel so much better! Looking forward to my first post op at the ps on Wednesday. I have 4 drains and hope that they can at least take out 2 of them. These things are the pits. Going to sit outside for a bit to try to keep my spirits up, fresh air and sun can work wonders at times. Be well everyone. -
hi everyone. I have been reading your posts daily to see how everyone is faring post surgery as well as to keep track of those who still have surgeries scheduled for end of the month. for those of you who are recovering quickly and smoothly I am so so glad!! And for those who have had some discomfort and or nasty little surprises like lymph nodes coming up Positive or finding involvement in the prophylactic breast I am so sorry. But please don't let it discourage you! We can get past these obstacles.
I am not sure but do I win our February prize for having two surgeries in same month? One on feb 1 and one on last day of month? I know there is a grunge contest going on for who has drain in longest Anyway, I go in this we'd feb 29th to get that nasty node removed (the one i didn't find out about until 8 Days post op) and also for plastic surgeon to deal with fat necrosis along my abdominal incision. I am hoping it will be short and sweet and will not set me back too far with my recovery.
Here's a report on what to expect 30says out post BMX (DIEP on L/TRAM on R).
1.my new breasts look better..less swelling and bruising..but there is still a lot of soreness and pain in my rib and chest area. Abdominal muscles don't hurt as badly but I still need my pain meds. Have cut back on Percoset from 3x a day to 2x. But without it the throbbing pain gets too bad and I can't rest
2. My skin is dry and cracked all over especially wherever it is touched by gauze tape or the compression bra or girdle. I have been using lots of Lubriderm and Eucerna all over including on the new breasts and that helps. Sometimes I just take off the compression garments and wear lite cotton tee and cotton pj pants for a few hours to let my skin breathe a bit and that helps. Plastic surgeon ok'd all of the above when he saw how bad my skin looked.
3. I switched to mildest soap possible..liquid Dove..the extra moisturizing one. Stay away from deodorant soap or anything too drying.
4. The grunge factor..the drains were certainly disgusting. I also had trouble managing my hair bc I couldn't wield the blow drier due to arm soreness. After week two I got tired of looking and feeling grungy all the time. This is also about the time I found out about the node and that I would need chemo and would lose my hair. I already have short hair, but I went and got a Really short spiky cut to make washing and styling easy for the next few weeks.. And also to make it easier for when I to transition to bald. I highly recommend this for those of you who will be starting chemo...my new short cut feels good, makes it a snap to get ready, and looks good with earring! I also started putting on some lite makeup again everyday, even if i am staying home...just a little concealer blush, gloss and mascara. It seems to help me feel less grunge, less like a cancer patient and more in control of my life. Now here is the funny part! I desparately needed a manicure/pedicure too so I had a friend drive me to the nail salon the other day. I thought I looked pretty decent, right. Except that I haven't Shaved my legs since feb 1....I can't really bend down yet and don't want to risk falling in the shower. So i had qute the FOREST growing down there!! Oh well.. I explained to the manicurist that I am recovering from surgery and just couldn't manage shaving yet. In any case, at some point I guess I will be able to tackle shaving the legs again. In meantime, I will keep focused on getting well and looking well.
Keep hanging in there ladies! We are strong and can do whatever we have to do to get thru our treatment plans. And don't let the setbacks set you back! Attitude is everything. Iwill touch base after my little "procedure" on wed -
I am on day 26 of having drains and no shower. I still have all the 3 drains i started with. I am pretty sure i am near the top for getting the glorious grunge award.
I am going to doctor on wednesday it will be almost a full month since surgery i am thinking once she gets to see me in person i will be able to shower and have drains removed.-i hope
I have come to the conclusion that the drains finish when they are good and ready. I tried being lazy doing next nothing -still draining lots then i tried being more active- still draining lots then i tried a combo of both active and relax- still draining lots.
So it appears that this is our body's way of saying when its ready and it has nothing to do with anything else. I have heard it is important to let your drains drain as much as they can it is better for you so i am trying to look at it this way. At least they are only annoying and not painful.
Good luck to all

Pelican Girl,
I had a pedicle tram on Feb 1 and still have swelling in the hips and thighs. My weight is still up too. Do you or did you experience any of this? I know it takes time for the surgical areas swelling to decrease, but my saddle baggy, thunder thighs are making me crazy!!!
Beth,
Hang tough and hopefully those nasty drains will come out on Wednesday!!! I had mine for 3 weeks. I think he pulled one of them too early cuz it was uncomfortable. I haven't had any leakage from the site, but that area seems kind of puffy to me. I guess I'm pretty puffy in the ABS and hips, thighs anyway:>
Best wishes to all with surgery today and speedy recovery to all who are over the hump!!

Ladies - I love you all! It is funny but life is starting to take over again, and the kids are upset about this little thing, or that little thing, and I love it! Screw cancer!
MaryEllen - You are making the best decision of your life. Period.
As far as recon/ no recon goes, I know now without a doubt that I would have been great either way. I rocked my 200 cc booblets and drains yesterday at church and no one noticed at all.
I had some chaffing from the compression garment so I cut men's soft t-shirts down the front and put them under the compression garment. Oh what a relief.
The variety of dr's orders with drains is interesting. Mine said I could take a shower 24 hours after the pain ball came out, so I did. I got stuck unable to do the drain sponges, but called my neighbor in to help. She was more than happy to. Somehow my modesty was removed with my breasts!
Pelicangirl - so sorry for all the trouble. You are due a break my sweet girl.

Welcome mmswarowski (PBMX) to Feb. "fun" club. Your lsurgery matjes tomorrow are Susanes(BMX) and Joannweb(BMX). Don't think we've had three BMXs scheduled on the same day. You ladies are the trifecta ticket. Remember to take your relaxer pill if anxious and know that it is a huge relief to get the surgery behind you.
Dear Pelicangirl, so far you and mma59 both had to go back in the same month for the same deal. Need to take an additonal node after final path from surgery came back positive. I'm going to be frank here. I think you are near the top of the list of our group for the most surprises, complications, side effects etc. Girl, stop it already with the bells and whistles! We care about yourwell being. Naturally, we appreciate and learn from your details.
Beth1965, I have same train of thought regarding the drains. It's good to get all that liquid out and it didn't matter what I did or didn't do (activity level) to affect production.
Now for anyone who may be offended about intimacy- just skip this paragraph. Beth, I added skin contact up one notch from just a gentle hug with DH. It too had zero effect on drain output. I found the best garment for an MXer. Wrap around blouses- the kind that have the hole in the side seam where the tie goes through and has a diagonal front opening! Let me repeat that. A diagonal front opening! They cover and hide the under construction side, yet the remaining side can actually be exposed easily. Depending on which side your wrap around blouse opens and side of MX, you may have to use a safety pin for assistance. The humorous part is don't forget to rotate that surgical drain to the rear of the garment! Easy for me as I purchased that handy-dandy elastic drain belt with the velcro loops. It was really good for my psyche. I had been feeling "broken, damaged, in need of repair". DH has been afraid of hurting me in any way when I'm rigged with all these gadgets. I just said, let me take the lead, I'll do all the moving. It made me feel like I can have close human contact, am still desirable, can resolve feeling "skin hungry" and reminds both of us that this is not a permanent deal. We thought I looked pretty darn good in one of those diagonal wrap around blouses! We both had a good laugh about it all. If he doesn't say something stupid (cuz' you know husbands have been known to do that) we might try it again soon. Maybe, I'll even be able to get rid of the blasted drain and aquarium tubing.
Galsal I am trying to get back to work this week, too. I am shocked you're even trying at the stage of your particular recovery. I don't have permission (I agree) to return at all at least until my drain is out. I too will go back part time at first to see how taxing or what I'll feel up to. I think I saw a thread that is titled "dumbest things people have said about BC". Hopefully I won't need it.
I was sent the funniest picture. If I can figure out how to upload it as my temporary postin photo I will do so. Three ladies are sitting on a sofa and wearing rice hull filled long rectangular neck . "scarves". For those of you who may not know, people purchase rice hull filled "bean bags" in various shapes and sizes, place them in the microwave and wrap them around their sore backs, necks etc. for warmth/therapy. They are re-usable. These ladies have super long ones and when wrapped around their necks, the ends look like saggy boobs complete with nipple art and hang exactly over their chests where breast would be. Now, that's my kind of sore neck warmer! The picture is hilarious! It's one of those visual jokes.

Yep gotta go with all the same, must be normal, the BS and PS say I am doing great, but had all kinds of itching which went away after they let me shower at home. Prior I had a sponge bath at the hosp with some Aloe Vera and double chemical soap and lotion from the nurses. The ingredient list on it is so long dunno whats in it. Got home and started using Wet Ones hypoallergenic and a solution of water mix with apple cider vinegar for my different sponge bathes but then was given a go ahead to clip my drains on the lanyard and shower so I loved that. This morn she took the drains out and I am a free woman. I used a lot of extra virgin 100% olive oil from the health store for my itching and a lot of Always maxi pads to keep things on the cami and sports bras from rubbing me. I feel ok now but am still in my recliner cuz I love sleeping in it and my cardboard chest is fluffing a little the saline is starting to distribute but I do feel like I am wearing a tight bandage all the time which I am not and have weird pains like a pin prick in the back and ribs sometimes and chest pains etc and phantom sensations like a bra brushing a nipple which they no longer really exists. The cancer was there and they were gonna just keyhole it but the TE wouldnt fit so they had to cut a 3 inch line across both sides. Not pretty but hope the final implant pushes the line down a little. When do we use the scar reducers now or after the final implant?

Just squeaking in. My surgery will be Wednesday, February 29. BMX, no reconstruction. I'm doing really well, not nervous about the surgery itself. A little nervous about the sentinel node biopsy. My family will know before I do, if the lymph nodes are positive, I think. My surgeon will talk to them right after surgery, while I'm in recovery.
I think I'm ready.
-
Layla.....I get the same phantom pains....and some tingling some times. It must be nerves re-growing or something. The pains are gone almost before I register them being there. I also get a charlie-horse like cramp in the boobage some times. Weird. Mostly...congrats on the drain freedom :-)
dreniger -- Welcome to our group, we are happy to have you but really sorry you have a need to be here. Good luck with your surgery....so glad you are doing well before, I was a nervous wreck!!

Hi Ladies, it is so great to have all of you to compare notes with. I am three weeks post BMX. I went to work for 3 hours last Thursday and 3 hours today. I am a secretary so most of my time is sitting at a computer desk. It is not strenuous. I did drive myself today; it is only a 5 minute drive so I felt ok doing that. My boss is letting me be very flexible with what hours I want to work and I will work back slowly to a 20 hour week (my usual schedule). I take a nap every afternoon. I have found it helpful to silence my cell phone and unplug the house phone because inevitably someone will call to check on me.
How are you feeling about the tissue expanders? My right one (the cancer side) is very uncomfortable. It actually feels tighter and fuller than before. I am scheduled for my first fill this Thursday, but I am so scared to have it done. I am going to go to see the PS or her PA and tell them how I feel, maybe they will agree to wait a week or two. Hopefully I don't have some fluid in there that needs drained. The swelling under my right arm seems more than before as well, which is probably what is pulling it all so tight. Is anyone else feeling this way?
How about the arm that you had lymph nodes taken out of? Mine is still very tight and sore. My range of motion is not good. I am doing the stretching exercises, but I don't feel like I am making any progress. I have to make an appt. with a PT who specializes in lymphedema. Is anyone else having this same issue?
Tomorrow I see the radiation oncologist. I am praying that I don't have to have radiation. I was under the impression that if I had a mastectomy and all the tissue was removed, in addition to a clean margin, that I would not need radiation. Now the PA says that new research shows that premenopausal women benefit from radiation in addition to chemo. I am not sure if I can continue with this reconstruction with implants if they have to give me radiation. Let's hope I don't need it and it is just a precautionary visit!
Good luck to all of you who are in recovery and to our last two February date ladies who are yet to have their surgery!
-
mcm24--yes, yes and yes! I still have tightness and especially in the side where the lymph nodes were taken out. I am faithfully doing my exercises. I am in PT but not with a certified lymphedema specialist. I am seeking one of those--hard to find. I believe I have cording in that arm which is what is really restricting my motion and causing discomfort. My back and the back of my arms (tricep area) are very sore today. I am also 3 weeks out from BMX. I'm sorry I don't have any good advice!
Regarding radiation, I would assume that the reason it is being recommended to you is because of the nodes. I am having it. I postponed my planning session from today to Friday because of the arm range of motion issues. I hope you don't have to do the rads. -
I have some range of motion issues....just "pulling" and I didn't have any nodes removed. Mary, my TEs actually felt better when I started getting fills. I get 60cc in each every week....they are tight for a few days afterwards then level out and feel as normal as they can feel. I am at 470ccs now. The fills aren't too bad. I just close my eyes so I don't see the needle. My husband is completely entertained with the whole process...he likes to watch them grow. Men?...ugh!
-
My surgeon said I could shower right away...is he Liar, Liar Pants on Fire????? Yikes....my husband will not be happy about washing my hair...he will do it tho...I married the best man on earth!
-
Maryellen -- No...different PS do things differently. There are several on here that were allowed to shower within 24 to 48 hours. I was SO jealous of them :-) I went to my local beauty salon to have my hair washed twice a week. I have long, thick hair and only wash it every 2 or 3 days anyway. It was kinda nice to have someone do it for me for a couple of weeks.
-
Feeling really lucky today. Surgery last Wed, shower Friday night, drains out this afternoon, and no ugly surprises on my path report. I didn't have recon which probably helped me get the drain out early.
-
Hey girls! Less than 12 hours and I will be at the hospital for my bmx and reconstruction. I'm starting to get a little nervous now. Thank you to ALL of you who have posted about your experiences, pre- and post-op. It helps to sorta know what to expect! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for no problem with the nodes. Will post back as soon as I can to add my 2 cents' worth to this discussion
-
Good luck to you Susanes.....we will be here waiting for your return, all the while praying for you!!
-
Best of luck to you Susanes...you know where to report in after.
-
Layla,
Stay away from Beth1965's puppy with all of that olive oil.

Thankfully, BS permitted showers as soon as I got home although only with white dial antibacterial soap. The first couple I had help from a girlfriend. I'm thankful she was around to help on and off since it's hard to do some things when you live alone.
Work today - well, spoke with my Supervisor and told her I didn't really want to speak with people or have them coming up to me and wanting to talk. She went around to the various departments and let them know to say welcome back in passing but to leave me alone for a few days. My department is quite accommodating about the hours for the part-time schedule. Today was 10-2. Tomorrow I'm aiming for 9:30 for four hours. I'm working on getting myself in there a bit earlier each day to get back on track to my regular 8-5 schedule.
Some are shocked I'm back already. What will sitting at home accomplish? Drains have been out since Wednesday, I'm able to shower by myself, do laundry by myself (although restrict myself to only a handful of items to carry at a time), lean forward enough to put things in the dishwasher without feeling like my chest was going to fall off, etc. My vehicle is an automatic transmission or BS wouldn't have let me drive yet. He doesn't know that it's a Blazer though. The squishy pillow between me and the seatbelt is still needed. The scary thought I'd had the other day is OMG, what if I were in an accident and the airbags deployed? That would hurt like HELL, if not cause one to pass out from the pain.
So many have made great strides and my hat's off to all of you! Next stop, Oncology on 3/21.
-
We are rooting for you Susanes I had the bmx and the TE, I was a wreck but the anesthe told me she would put something in the IV to relax me and the next thing I knew I woke up in ICU surrounded by my friends but I was in pain so the nurses made them leave and gave me morphine and drugs in the IV to help me sleep til the next day when I got my sponge bath and my oral pills and they let me eat real food. I got a lot of flowers and visits and felt ok for awhile then I went bonkers and cried til they gave me valium and kept me til Wed morn cuz they were worried I might harm myself. i got it together tho and fiance got me home with my hamburger buns for breast now. I am terriified of the fills that the PS will do next wk. I had surg 2/13 so 14 days later,Q pump off, drains off, showering allowed to drive,am taking Flexeril and Tramadol but my chest is feeling like that little monster from the Alien movie is gonna jump outta there. Anyone got an idea how to ease the tightness? Do we rub any coconut oil or olive oil,emu oil,? How do we handle this situation? I am a little behind ya mcm24* dunno how I am gonna feel at work,I do estates and trusts but its desk work, I work 4/10 thats 4 days for 10 hours so I can take off on a weekday. I go back Mon,"fun & games" are over....Game Over...get outta the arcade!!
-
Susanes, good luck on Tuesday. We will all be here waiting.
Galsal, I have been working from home, will go to the office later this week. I generally work alone,so having to deal with others is typically not an issue. I do have a big weekend long event begining Friday, but will attend and participate and when I ahve had enough, will go to my room.
I am doing somelaundry as well, like Galsal, just small handfuls unless someone is around to carry the hamper, loading the diswasher. Have not attempted changing sheets alone, that just seems like too much of a stretch, literally and figurativley.
I have discomfort on the MX side and where the nodes (30 ) were taken. I sleep better if I put a small pillow between my arm and body. Seems to take so much of the ache away. I still get tired fairly easily and am napping every afternoon.
Galsal, like you I have thought about an accident or bumping into furniture and can't imagine the pain.Let's hope none of us have that experience.
I am so grateful that February is almost over. Time to move onto next steps for all of us.
Gentle evening
Nel
-
Glad you're doing well Nel. I do agree....gentle evening is a good thing.
For the reconstruction surgery and if chemo is needed, work will do what they can to let me do some work from home if I'm jut not up to physically being there. I consider this to have been my test run surgery to get a better idea of what to expect with the next one.
Best wish and later!
-
Welcome dreniger....As a 4 days post op UMX gal, I have to say that I found the waiting for the surgery to be the most difficult. Even though I am now sore and physically hurting from the surgery (I can't take any pain meds due to my easily nauseated stomach), the emotional relief, for me, has been tremendous. I was lucky to discover that none of my nodes were positive, so that was a huge weight off of my shoulders, but even if they were, I still think the waiting is the worst part.
