I have recently been dx with shingles. It is located below my left mx scar and one spot above scar near my armpit. Should I be concerned?

I will eventually be vaccinated once the rash has healed. It is recommended the vaccine be given on the arm. It is a live virus vaccine. What are your thoughts on this, especially on the arm? My healthcare pros do not take my concerns on LE seriously. Thx...

So - they can give in your right arm.

I very well could be confused but I was told that you need to get the shingles vaccination before you deal with it for it to work.

Winterstorm, they can give vaccines in the thigh. Sometimes a slightly longer needle is needed, but there's no difference to you otherwise.

    Best of luck.

My primary suggested I get the shingles vaccine after I developed a case of shingles not long after my exchange surgery. I was 50 at the time, but the pharmacy (where they administer) said I had to be 60. Recently heard age for vaccine has been lowered to 50. I am bilateral mast, and I will definitely get in thigh.

I'll fight to get it in the thigh. You could get an outbreak of blisters from the vaccine though. I guess a gauze bandage can protect it. I am learning. I hope I don't need chemo if I have a recurrence (having a CT scan to see tomorrow).

WinterStorm: hoping for a clean scan tomorrow.

They did lower the age to 50, I'll have to ask my PCP about it at my next physical.

Mindy--Good luck on vaccine.  I had shingles 20 yrs ago from the back of my head to the tip of my nose.  Horrible!  I was told the vaccine was only for people who have not had shingles.  I called the CDC and they said only testing was done on people over 60 and had not had shingles BUT they recommended it for all over 60.  I dawdled and did not get it until after surgery, radiation, and LE.  I had it last fall with no after effects.  I only have LE on one side so had it in the other arm.  I hope you prevail on where you want the injection.

Becky, I was curious whether the vaccine is effective if one has already had shingles. I checked the CDC info, and it says if you've already had an outbreak, the vaccine can prevent further occurrences. Vaccine is effective at least six years but may last much longer. A recurrence can be in a different area of the body. I can imagine an outbreak in a LE quadrant would not be a good thing.

Tina--Good news.  Maybe they did a study on those who had had shingles.  I would hate to get them again.  I had to see an eye doctor for three weeks because it was in my eye.  So six years I may redo just to be safe.  Thanks.

OH MY GOSH!  I, too was diagnosed with shingles where I was radiated on my left side!  My whole left side of my chest was nothing but red skin and blisters!!! HORRIBLE PAIN, I'd post pictures but too graphic

I went to the dermatologist who gave me Valtrex and it worked like a charm. 3x 500 mg tablets for 10 days...no more blisters.  I also sprinkled medicated baby powder on them to dry them out

Shingles is a dirty little secret they don't tell you about!

I got shingles on my left lower torso (cancer side) a few months PFC (last April) and had to postpone my exchange. I was 50. My PCP said that the shingles vaccine doesn't always work. Also your chances of getting shingles again are very low unless you had the outbreak for more than 1 month (I had it for 5 weeks. Really sucked too). I believe it was just approved for age 50 and above a year ago but insurance will only cover for 60+. Not sure if it will cover for immune compromised.

I did not get the vaccine but I made my husband (over 60) get it.

Michelle, that sounds horrible! I am taking 1000mg (that's right, 1 gram) of Valtrex for 7 days. It is a relatively small and contained area on my left side underneath my mx scar. I hope that dosage is enough! The itching and most of the pain is gone now. I see one blister left and have 5 more doses left to take.

I just had my CT scan and waiting for the results. Thank you for the well wishes. Yes I did sleep well (um, took a sleeping pill lol). If it is a cancer recurrence, because of the fear of a shingles recurrence, I don't think I would do chemo. How frightening to get shingles in the middle of tx!

I talked to a diabetic educator nurse in immunology today and she said I could get the vaccine in my thigh. Yay! I was worried because she said I couldn't get blood drawn or IVs in my legs.

My, what we go through because of BC!

I got a shingles vac a month ago between changing chemos. I am 53 and insurance would not pay. I got a prescription from my PCP and got the vac at a Walgreens Take Care Clinic. it cost me $219. I had no problems from it.

I have wanted to do it for a while because I have seen what shingles can do. The biggest problem I had was the nurse at the clinic did not want to give it to someone in cancer treatment. I told her I would not be there without the blessing of my different docs. She kept looking up stuff on the internet-I finally told her give me my script back and I would go somewhere else. She finally did agree to it.

I found out the the shingles vac. was covered under the medical portion of my insurance, you have to call your insurance carrier and it is for people over 50. I couldn't just get a prescription and go to Walgreen's, because then they would bill it under the prescription portion of my insurance which would then not be covered. I got it for both me and my husband saved $400.00 bucks.

Glad I found this post as I have had this for the second time in three months during chemo, exact same spot, lower abdominal area.  Of course I'm not sure, but the blisters look exactly like photos I've found on line.  I'll go to the doctor tomorrow, but I'd rather it be shingles than some of the other possibilites I imagined but rules out, such as flesh-eating disease!

jenlee I was told it doesn't come back in the same place but I know a few people who did get it in the same place. I sure hope if it's shingles you don't get a bad case of it.
