Becky, I have friends I visit annually in Knoxville. It would be cool to attend a meeting or meet you. My friends live in a city neighborhood of K-ville. Is group closer to you or downtown? I'm afraid I don't know my way around the outskirts very well. I know we pass signs for Jefferson City on the way down, and I have heard it is historic. Always wanted to see, but by the time we've been on the road 9 hrs, we never want to stop. So cool you have a local support group. I recently noticed the hospital around the corner from me is supposed to have a LE group, so I called for info. Got a return message saying there weren't enough people to hold group. I got the feeling I was the only one! They said they would keep my name and number and contact me if others were interested. Whatever. You guys are my support group, and I don't think I could find nicer people or better info than I do here. Still, it would be nice to actually meet people in person who have LE.

Tina-I sent you a PM.
-
Tina--I sent you a second PM after you answered me the other day. Did you get it? Becky

Back at you, Becky.

We had a great support group meeting in Knoxville yesterday. The nurse coordinator planned a celebration for Lymphedema Awareness Day. The room was decorated with balloons, an LE ribbon was given to each attendee, and a big cake decorated for the occasion. We then shared all of the gadgets and aids that make living with LE easier. It was a great meeting. If anyone is in the area and would like to attend, our next meeting is April 5 at 5:30.

Becky, could you share the pearls of wisdom?

Pearls of widsom?? I love that turn of phrase. Most of the gadgets seen have been mentioned here on bco.org. It was just fun to see what everyone came up with. One I had not heard about was putting foam ear plugs between the fingers under wrapping and glove to reduce hand/finger swelling. Another was seeing a set of Dream Sleeves in all colors. They come in three different compressions. A caretaker who comes with her mother-in-law had created a manual with all of the data an information compiled in one spot in case she would have to have someone else step in and take over. Directions to wrapping, skin care, logging measurements, MLD, etc. It is document that could go to the hospital with a person. She also had history in it. A good idea. Becky
-
Becky, did they cut the foam ear plugs in half to make a flat surface?
Kira

Kira--I don't know. I just wrote my therapist an email and asked her. She only works MWF so I don't know if I will hear from her until Friday. I will let you know. I did not know the woman who told us about it--it was her first time. But my therapist told me she was the one who did it. B

Kira,
Below is the response from my therapist. I hope it makes sense.
No cutting needed. Their rounded shape just helps the density to
gradually increase from the edge to the middle of the plug. It's nice to
put them between 2 pieces of breathable (paper) tape to hold them in
place against the skin and keep them properly spaced. Their purpose is
to contour the normal hollows of the hand of foot.
Enjoy this lovely weather! -
Becky it sounds like she puts them in the web spaces like foam "carrots", not on the fingers themselves, I have issues with fluid hanging out in the web space, so that makes sense to me.
